Download Google Maps areas before you leave, and make sure they cover your entire driving route—not just your starting point or destination. Offline driving guidance works only when the full route is inside saved map coverage; without an internet connection, Google Maps does not provide live traffic information or alternate routes.
Download a map on Android
Connect to the internet and open Google Maps while signed in. You can save coverage around a searched place or choose a custom map area that follows your trip.

Download around a searched place
- Search for a place in Google Maps and open its place sheet.
- Tap More > Download offline map.
- Review the area shown on the map, then tap Download.
Choose a custom area for your route
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Offline maps > Select your own map.
- Adjust the map so the saved area includes the planned route and destinations, then tap Download.
Before departure, open Offline maps and confirm that the needed area is saved. If your Android device supports an SD card and storage is tight, Google Maps can save offline maps to the card. On Android 6.0 or higher, Google says the card must be set up as portable storage. If you change the storage preference, download the map again. An SD card is optional; check your device’s compatibility before relying on one.

Download a map on iPhone or iPad
Connect to the internet and open Google Maps. For the place-search method, Google says not to use Incognito mode.

Download around a searched place
- Search for a place, then tap its name or address.
- Choose More > Download offline map.
- Adjust the area if needed and tap Download.
Choose a custom area for your route
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Offline maps > Select your own map.
- Move or resize the map area to cover the planned route and destinations, then tap Download.
Open Offline maps before leaving and confirm that the area you need is listed. If the labels in your app differ, look for Offline maps; menu wording can change.
Make sure the saved area covers the whole drive
Google Maps can guide you offline only when the entire driving route falls within downloaded map coverage. A map centered on the destination may not include the road you take to get there. Select an area broad enough to contain the route, including any destinations along the way. If the trip crosses the edge of the saved area, download broader coverage or additional areas while you still have internet access.

Coverage availability varies: some countries or regions do not allow offline downloads because of contractual limitations, language support, address formats, or other reasons. Check that you can download maps for your destination before relying on offline navigation.

Know what offline navigation cannot do
- No live traffic: Google Maps does not provide traffic information while you are offline.
- No alternate routes: You will not get alternate-route options without a connection.
- Driving only: Google says transit, bicycling, and walking directions are unavailable offline.
Offline guidance is a backup for areas without reliable mobile internet, not a substitute for planning around these limitations.

Update maps and check storage before departure
Downloaded maps need periodic updates before they expire. Google says Maps tries to update an area automatically when it is due to expire within 15 days and the device is connected to Wi-Fi. To update manually, open Offline maps, select an expiring area, and tap Update.
Google’s phone and tablet help pages do not state a universal download size or numeric area limit. Choose an area sized for your route and check your device’s available storage rather than assuming a particular download will fit.
