For the current free product, use Bitdefender’s Antivirus Free for Windows page. To try or buy Antivirus Plus, start at Bitdefender’s official Antivirus Plus page, then install it through Bitdefender Central. Avoid old Free Edition installers: that product is retired.
Choose the current Bitdefender product
Bitdefender Antivirus Free for Windows is the current free edition. Bitdefender says it launched in March 2022 to replace the earlier Antivirus Free Edition. The current product offers real-time malware protection and customizable scan scheduling without a trial period or hidden cost, according to Bitdefender’s support article.

The previous Antivirus Free Edition is no longer supported. Bitdefender lists its end of sales as December 8, 2021, end of life as December 31, 2021, and end of support as June 30, 2022. Its listed migration path is the current Antivirus Free for Windows. Do not rely on a legacy installer from an old download page or an unofficial download site.
Download and install Bitdefender on Windows
Bitdefender’s Windows installation guide uses Bitdefender Central to deliver and activate the product. For Plus, sign in with the Bitdefender account associated with your trial or subscription. Follow these steps:

- Open Bitdefender Central and sign in, or create an account if needed.
- Choose Install Bitdefender Products.
- In the Security panel, select Install for the product you want.
- Download the installer, open the saved file, and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Allow the installation to finish. The installed product validates the subscription through your Bitdefender account.
For Free, begin from Bitdefender’s official Free page and follow its download instructions. Product availability and the exact installation screens can vary by region or change over time.
Check Windows compatibility first
Bitdefender’s Windows requirements page lists these minimums. Check the live system requirements and the product page before installing, since requirements may change.

Bitdefender cautions that older-generation CPUs may affect performance and that beta or pre-release Windows versions are not supported.
Free versus Antivirus Plus
The main decision is whether you need a no-trial free product or want Plus features and a time-limited trial. Bitdefender’s US product page lists the following distinctions; check it for current regional features, device options, and offers.

These listed features and product names can change. Compare the current options on Bitdefender’s Antivirus Plus page rather than assuming every feature or device count applies in every country.
Understand the Plus trial and subscription
Bitdefender’s US page offers a 30-day full trial without a credit card. The trial is not a permanently free edition: Bitdefender’s trial support article says it expires after 30 days, after which the product cannot be used without subscribing.

If you choose a paid subscription, check the checkout terms. Bitdefender says a subscription automatically renews if you enrolled in auto-renewal. You can manage it in Bitdefender Central. The renewal price may be higher than the initial-term offer, and Bitdefender says it sends an email notice beforehand with renewal pricing.

Bitdefender’s Windows release page reported version 27.0.62.355, released September 9, 2026. It says virus definitions update daily and major version updates arrive about every four weeks; rollouts may be gradual. The version and release schedule can change, so consult the Windows release notes for the current build.
