To check an e-invoice, use GSTN’s official signed-data or QR-code verification route and compare the result with the invoice you received.
First, identify which invoice you need
“Download a GST invoice” can mean either getting a copy of a bill for something you bought or exporting e-invoice details for your own business’s GST return. These are different tasks.

- Buyer needing a purchase copy: Contact the merchant or supplier that issued the invoice and request a copy. The official GSTR-1 download guidance covers taxpayer return data; it does not establish a general buyer-facing portal facility for retrieving any supplier’s individual PDF.
- Taxpayer preparing GSTR-1: The GST Portal guide describes downloading e-invoice details auto-populated in Form GSTR-1, including a download-history area for files still being prepared. Follow the current GST Portal guide for the latest labels and steps: GSTR-1 user guide.
Check the invoice’s basic particulars
Before relying on a tax invoice, check that its information matches the transaction and the supplier. CBIC’s invoice rules list particulars including the supplier’s name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive serial number unique for the financial year; the issue date; recipient details where applicable; and information about the goods or services. See CBIC’s CGST Rules PDF.
These particulars help you spot omissions or inconsistencies, but a document containing them is not thereby proven genuine. For an e-invoice, use the signed-data or QR verification process as well.

Verify an e-invoice’s signed data or QR code
GSTN says an e-invoice’s authenticity or correctness can be checked using its “Verify Signed Invoice” function. Depending on what you have, provide the signed JSON file or the signed QR-code string through the e-invoice system, or use the official QR verification app/tool described by GSTN. Compare the information returned with the invoice copy, including the supplier, recipient, invoice and supply details. GSTN’s guidance is available in its e-invoicing FAQ.
- Get the signed JSON file or signed QR-code string from the e-invoice, if available.
- Open the official e-invoice verification facility described by GSTN and choose “Verify Signed Invoice,” or use GSTN’s official QR verification tool.
- Submit the signed data or QR information as requested.
- Check that the returned details agree with the invoice and the underlying purchase. If they do not, ask the issuer to clarify or correct the document before treating the mismatch as resolved.
A QR code’s presence alone is not the verification result; the useful check is whether the official tool validates the signed information and whether that information matches the document and transaction.
What e-invoicing means—and what it does not
GST e-invoicing is a reporting and authentication process for specified GST documents. Applicable businesses prepare invoices in their own accounting, billing or ERP systems, report the details to an Invoice Registration Portal (IRP), and receive signed invoice data with an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and QR code. The IRP does not create every invoice for the business. GSTN puts it plainly: “It doesn’t mean generation of invoice by a Government portal.” See GSTN’s e-invoicing overview and FAQ.

Not every GST invoice is an e-invoice. The signed QR/JSON verification route applies when the document is an e-invoice with the relevant signed data; a conventional GST invoice should still be checked against its particulars and transaction details. Whether a business must use e-invoicing depends on current government notifications, so businesses should check current official applicability guidance rather than assume the rules apply to every taxpayer.
