To roll a site back, a WordPress site can be restored in one step with Restore website when that option is offered. Otherwise, you restore files and the database separately. Restoring an older backup reverts every change made after that backup date, so download your current site data before you start.
Before you start
Hostinger’s backup tools are part of the hosting product, so confirm three things before you follow any steps:

- Product type. The hosting backup workflow described here applies to hosting accounts. Hostinger Website Builder downloads are not covered by these steps, and Hostinger AI Builder has separate guidance. Check which product your site runs on before you begin.
- Your role. Shared Access users may not see every option. Some website-backup emails go to the hosting account’s registered address, so the account owner may need to retrieve them.
- Which backups exist. The dates available for your account are shown in hPanel. Hostinger’s Help Center states that weekly backups are kept for six weeks and daily backups for seven days, so older dates may already be gone.

Download a backup in hPanel
There are three download routes. They differ in what they cover and how the file reaches you, so choose the one that matches what you need.

Download website files
- Go to Websites → Dashboard and select the correct site.
- Select Backups in the sidebar.
- Open Restore and download → Files backups.
- Choose the date you need and start the download preparation.
- Wait until preparation is complete, then download the
.tar.gzarchive.
If you need only a few individual files rather than a full archive, Hostinger points to File Manager or FTP for those selections.
Download the database
- In the same Backups area, choose Database backups.
- Select the database and the date.
- Request the download and wait for preparation to finish.
- Download the compressed
.sql.gzfile.
If you are not sure which database belongs to the site, check the site’s configuration file before you download. Matching the database to the site is the step most often skipped, and it matters more at restore time.

Download a WordPress website export
For a specific WordPress website, the Website backup flow can send file and database links to the hosting account’s registered email rather than offering a direct download in hPanel. Keep the links in a safe place, and make sure the person who manages the account can access that inbox.
Hostinger’s current tutorial uses some button labels that differ from the Help Center articles. Follow the labels shown in your own account rather than assuming one sequence applies everywhere. Downloaded archives can also be copied to a drive you control if you want an offline copy. Hostinger’s steps do not require external storage, and hPanel restores do not need local files on a separate device.
Restore a backup
There are two restore paths. The full WordPress restore is simpler, but it replaces files and the database together. Separate restoration takes more effort, but it lets you control exactly which data is replaced.

Full WordPress restore
- Go to Websites → Dashboard, select the site, and open Backups.
- Select the Website backup date you want to return to.
- Choose Restore website.
- Read the overwrite warning and confirm only if the date and scope are correct.
- Open Restore History to follow progress. The restore runs in the background, so the request being accepted does not mean the restore has finished.
Separate file and database restore
Use this path if Restore website is not offered for your site, or if it reports that no backups are available. Restore the files and the database as two separate operations, checking the date and the target each time.

- Database: the target database must already exist in your current MySQL database list. If it does not, create or select the correct database first; a database-only restore cannot target a database that is missing from that list.
- Match the pair: confirm that the database and files belong to the same website and the same intended date. Restoring a database from one date with files from another can leave the site inconsistent.
What the restore overwrites
Hostinger’s Help Center states the rule plainly in its article “How to restore backups at Hostinger” (source):

“After restoring a backup, your website will be returned to its state at the moment of backup creation; any changes done after the backup date will be reverted.”
In practice, anything published, uploaded, edited, or ordered after the backup date is lost from the live site. Download the current files and database first, so you can recover that material if needed. Restoring a backup is also not a way to move a site to another account; Hostinger publishes separate instructions for that.
The documented full-site restore applies to WordPress. Sites on other content management systems may need separate file and database restoration.
After the restore
- Clear your browser cache before you check the site, so you do not see a stale version.
- Check the pages you changed most recently and confirm that the expected content is back.
- If the site uses symlinks, re-add them manually. Hostinger states that symlinks are not automatically recreated after a restore.
- Keep the downloaded archives until you have confirmed the restored site works.
If something goes wrong
- Restore website is missing or shows no backups. Use the separate file and database restore. Check that the backup dates are still within the retention windows listed above.
- The database is not in the list. Confirm the database exists in the current MySQL database list before retrying the database restore.
- The restore appears stuck. Check the status in Restore History rather than assuming it is complete or failed.
- The site looks unchanged after restoring. Clear the browser cache and recheck. If the content still does not match the chosen date, confirm which backup date you selected.
The restore scope and labels described here are current as of October 2026. Hostinger may change the interface, so verify each label in your account before you follow these steps.
