Download the free Bedrock Dedicated Server from Minecraft’s official Bedrock server page, extract it into a dedicated folder, run it once, open UDP port 19132 (and 19133 for IPv6), then connect from a Bedrock client running the same version. To use an existing world, copy its world folder into the server’s worlds directory and set that folder name as level-name in server.properties.

What you are downloading
The correct software is Mojang’s Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS). It is free and separate from the Java Edition server. A Java server file will not host a Bedrock world, and a Bedrock client cannot join a Java server without a separate compatibility solution.

Use a release server for players on the normal Bedrock release. A preview server is not compatible with the full release, so every player must use the matching preview build if you choose it.
Builds change regularly. Check the official download page immediately before downloading and again when updating, because the current version, operating-system requirements and package names are version-specific.

Hardware and operating-system requirements
The official page lists these minimums. Treat them as a starting point rather than a promise of a particular player count or simulation distance.

Download and install Bedrock Dedicated Server
1. Download the matching package
- Open minecraft.net/en-us/download/server/bedrock.
- Choose the Windows or Linux download that matches the computer hosting the world.
- Choose a release build unless all players deliberately use the corresponding preview build.
- Save the archive somewhere you can find it. Do not run the server directly from a temporary Downloads folder.
2. Create a dedicated server folder
Make a permanent folder such as C:MinecraftServer on Windows or a directory such as ~/minecraft-bedrock on Linux. Extract every file from the downloaded archive into that folder. Keeping the files together makes the generated world, configuration, logs and packs easy to back up and prevents accidental deletion during a Downloads-folder cleanup.

3. First launch on Windows
- Open the extracted folder in File Explorer.
- Run the Bedrock server executable once. Windows Firewall may ask whether to allow network access; allow private-network access for a home network, and allow public-network access only when you intentionally host on a public network.
- Wait for the first-run files and default world to appear. Stop the process from its console before making major configuration changes.
The executable name can differ between package versions. Start the executable supplied in the archive rather than downloading a replacement from another site.
4. First launch on Linux
- Open a terminal in the extracted directory.
- Make the supplied server binary executable, for example
chmod +x bedrock_server. If the package uses a different filename, substitute that filename. - Run it once, for example
./bedrock_server, and wait for the initial files and default world to be created. - Stop it with
Ctrl+Cbefore editing configuration or replacing the world.
Run the server from its own directory so relative paths for worlds and packs resolve correctly.
Configure the server before inviting players
The first run creates server.properties. Open it with a plain-text editor while the server is stopped. The exact available keys can vary by release, but these are the settings that determine the basic experience.

Save the file with its original .properties extension, not as .txt. Avoid changing several unrelated settings at once; if a launch fails, you can then identify the setting responsible.
Load your existing Bedrock world
Back up before replacing anything
Stop the server and make a complete copy of the server folder. Also keep an untouched copy of the original world exported from the device where you played it. A server update, incompatible add-on or mistaken folder name can otherwise make recovery difficult.
Place the world in the server directory
- Locate the server folder’s
worldsdirectory. The first launch creates it along with the default world. - Copy your Bedrock world folder into
worlds. Keep the world folder itself, including its database and pack metadata; do not copy only individual region or database files. - Open
server.propertiesand setlevel-nameto the copied folder’s exact name, including capitalization and spaces. - Start the server and watch the console for the world-loading message. If it creates a new blank world instead, stop the server and re-check the folder nesting and
level-namespelling.
Do not edit the world while another copy of Minecraft is open against the same files. Use one authoritative copy at a time to avoid database corruption.

World compatibility considerations
The server and the world should be used with a compatible Bedrock release. Keep behavior packs and resource packs with the world when they are required, and expect to resolve pack prompts or missing-content errors after moving between devices. A release server cannot be joined by clients on an incompatible preview build, and the reverse is also true.
Start the server and verify it locally
- Start the server from its dedicated folder.
- Wait until the console indicates that it is listening and has finished loading the world.
- On the same computer, open Bedrock Edition and use the multiplayer screen’s option to add a server.
- For a local test, enter
127.0.0.1orlocalhostas the address and19132as the port. - Join and confirm that the correct world, player permissions, game mode and packs load before asking friends to connect.
If local joining works but an outside player cannot connect, the world and server are usually fine; investigate firewall and router configuration instead.

Bedrock Dedicated Server uses UDP. The default IPv4 port is 19132; the default IPv6 port is 19133. If you change either value in server.properties, use the new value consistently in the operating-system firewall, router forwarding rule and client connection screen.
For players on the same home network
- Allow the server executable through the host computer’s firewall on the private network profile.
- Use the host computer’s local IPv4 address, such as
192.168.x.x, rather than its public internet address. - Reserve the host’s local address in the router if possible, so a DHCP change does not break the bookmark.
For friends outside your home
- Create a UDP port-forwarding rule from the router’s external port 19132 to UDP 19132 on the server computer’s local address. Add the IPv6 rule for 19133 when you are actually using IPv6.
- Allow the same UDP port through the host firewall.
- Give friends your current public address and the configured port. Do not publish it broadly.
- Test from a network that is not your home Wi-Fi, such as a mobile connection. Some routers cannot test their own public address from inside the same network.
Running several Bedrock servers on one machine requires separate ports. Start the server intended to use the default port 19132 first; a server started on another port can take 19132 from later servers according to the documented startup behavior. Assign each additional instance its own port and matching forwarding rule.
Join the server from Bedrock Edition
Windows, Android and iOS
These platforms can generally add a server manually. Open the Bedrock multiplayer screen, choose the option to add an external server, enter the server address and UDP port, save it, and select the entry. Use localhost or 127.0.0.1:19132 only when the client and server run on the same computer; other devices need the host’s local or public address.
Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch
Community setup guides report that these consoles do not provide the same direct custom-IP entry as Windows, Android and iOS. The limitation is not confirmed on an official Mojang page in the material available here, so console behavior can change with platform updates. If a console cannot add your address directly, use an officially supported multiplayer or LAN route available on that platform rather than assuming the server is broken.
Version matching is mandatory
Every joining client must run the same Bedrock version as the server. Update the server when the clients update, or keep all clients on the server’s version where the platform permits it. Never mix a preview client with a release server and expect a connection.

Safe updates and routine operation
- Stop the server cleanly before copying, updating or replacing a world.
- Keep dated backups of the entire server folder and several generations of the world.
- Record your customized
server.propertiesvalues before installing a new package. - Test updates with a backup first, especially when moving between release and preview channels.
- Keep the server executable, world data and pack files in the same dedicated installation rather than mixing files from multiple versions.
- Review the official download page for changed requirements, ports or release notes whenever you upgrade.
