A V Rising save is a complete session folder, not a single file. It normally contains a persistence-version directory (the official 1.0.x instructions show v3), a GUID-named folder for the world, and files such as AutoSave_0.save.gz, ServerGameSettings.json, ServerHostSettings.json, SessionId.json and StartDate.json.
Persistence-version numbers can change when Stunlock makes a breaking save-format change. Use the version that exists in your installation rather than assuming that every installation uses v3. A save copied into the wrong version directory may not appear or may fail to load.
#1 Best Overall
- Awaken as a Vampire. Hunt for blood in nearby settlements to regain your strength and evade the scorching sun to survive.
- Raise your castle and thrive in an ever-changing, open world full of mystery. Gain allies online and conquer the land of the living.
The transfer preserves the shared world: castles, territories, map exploration and other world state. A character’s inventory, levels, powers and other player data remain associated with that player’s Steam or PlayStation account. Moving the folder does not turn one player’s character into another account’s character.
Before you copy anything
- Make sure the game or dedicated server is no longer saving to the world. Stop the server, or leave the session before copying.
- Have enough free space for both the original folder and a duplicate ZIP archive.
- Keep the original untouched until the transferred copy has loaded successfully.
- If the world uses cloud saves, plan to remove old copies through the in-game interface rather than deleting files manually.
Stunlock recommends frequent backups and specifically recommends backing up before patching or starting the server after a patch. A backup protects against hardware failure, loss of a cloud-hosted machine and a corrupted save state.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Find the exact save with V Rising’s menu
- Start V Rising.
- Open Load Game.
- Select the world you want to download.
- Click Go to Directory. Windows opens the exact session folder used by that world.
- Exit the game or otherwise stop it from writing to the folder before copying.
This method is safer than guessing between local and cloud locations because it identifies the folder for the selected world. Once File Explorer is open, move up through the folders if you need to identify the persistence version or the parent Saves directory.
Windows save locations
The following locations are the standard paths described in Stunlock’s dedicated-server and private-server instructions. Replace %USERPROFILE% with your Windows user profile automatically by pasting the path into File Explorer’s address bar.
| Save type | Default location | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated server | %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSaves |
A persistence-version folder containing the world session folder. |
Dedicated server with -persistentDataPath |
<your persistentDataPath>Saves |
The path supplied at launch, followed by Saves. |
| Client-hosted local save | %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingSaves |
The session folder for a locally stored world. |
| Client-hosted cloud save | %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingCloudSaves<SteamID> |
The save under the Steam-ID-specific directory. |
If you cannot find a world in one path, use Load Game → Go to Directory instead of moving or renaming random folders. The menu knows whether the selected world is local or cloud-backed.
Make a downloadable backup or ZIP archive
Copy the complete folder
- In File Explorer, select the entire GUID-named session folder shown by Go to Directory.
- Right-click it and choose Copy.
- Paste it into a separate backup location, such as another internal drive or an external USB drive.
- Keep the folder’s internal files and subfolders unchanged.
Copying the folder directly is useful when the destination computer can receive a directory through a shared drive or other file-transfer method.
Create a ZIP file
- Right-click the complete session folder.
- Choose Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder on Windows.
- Give the archive a descriptive name that includes the world name and backup date.
- Open the ZIP once to verify that it contains the session folder and its files, rather than an empty directory or a shortcut.
Stunlock’s private-server guide lists Google Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer and an external USB drive as transfer methods. Choose the method that fits the archive size and the people who need access; the game does not require a special V Rising transfer service.

Should you keep every autosave?
For maximum recovery options, keep the complete folder, including all autosaves. During a dedicated-server migration, Stunlock’s instructions allow you to retain every autosave or keep only the newest one. Keeping the complete backup is safer; pruning is an optional way to reduce the amount transferred after you have verified a separate original copy.
Move a private hosted world to another player
Stunlock’s July 2, 2025 private-server guide confirms that private server saves can be transferred manually so another player can host the same world with shared progress intact, including castles and map exploration.
Current host: package the save
- Open Load Game, select the world and click Go to Directory.
- Leave the world and make sure V Rising is no longer writing to it.
- Copy the complete save folder to a temporary location.
- Compress that folder into a ZIP archive.
- Send the archive using Google Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer or an external USB drive.
New host: install the save
- Download the ZIP archive and extract it without changing the files inside.
- Place the extracted save folder in the corresponding client-hosted
Savesor Steam-ID-specificCloudSaveslocation on the new computer. - Launch V Rising.
- Choose Continue Game, select the transferred save and start the session.
The new host should preserve the folder structure created by the original host. Do not put the ZIP file itself inside Saves, and do not add an extra layer of folders by extracting a folder inside another folder with the same name.
What friends keep, and what they do not
The world and structures move with the save: castles, territories and map status are shared world data. Each player’s inventory, level, powers and other character information remain tied to that player’s Steam or PlayStation account. A successful world transfer therefore does not reset the shared map, but it also does not let the new host assume another player’s account-bound character.
Move a client save to a Windows dedicated server
A dedicated-server migration has one extra requirement: the server must be pointed at the folder name you copied, and its persistence path must match the destination layout.
1. Locate and freeze the source world
- In the client, open Load Game, select the world and choose Go to Directory.
- Exit the session and stop any process that could write to the save.
- Back up the complete session folder before making changes.
2. Prepare the folder
The source folder may have a long GUID name. You may leave that name in place, or rename the folder to a simple name such as myworld. If you rename it, use exactly the same name in the server’s -saveName argument.
If the destination server already supplies its own host settings, you may remove ServerHostSettings.json from the copied folder. Keep a backup of the unmodified source first. You may also keep all autosaves or retain only the newest autosave, but do not delete the only known-good copy until the server has loaded.

3. Copy it to the server’s persistence path
Place the renamed or original session folder under:
<PersistentDataPath>Saves<current persistence version>
For a server using the Windows default, <PersistentDataPath> is represented by %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServer, so the default save tree is:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSaves<current persistence version><save-folder>
If the server was launched with -persistentDataPath, use that supplied path instead of the default location. The Saves subfolder and the persistence-version folder still belong in the path.
4. Start the server with the matching save name
Launch the dedicated server with:
-saveName myworld
Replace myworld with the exact folder name you used. A mismatch between the argument and folder name causes the server to look for a different world.
5. Prevent settings from overriding the copied world
Set GameSettingsPreset to empty. Also avoid a conflicting ServerGameSettings.json in the server’s default or local override settings folders. Otherwise, the server may apply external settings instead of the ServerGameSettings.json that belongs to the copied world.
6. Test before deleting the source
- Start the server and confirm that the expected world appears.
- Join with a player account that previously used the world.
- Check a known castle, territory and explored map area.
- Stop the server cleanly and make another backup of the working destination.
If the world is missing, stop the server and recheck the persistence-version directory, the exact save-folder name and the -saveName value before changing files further.

Local saves, cloud saves and deleting the old copy
After a successful migration, you may want to remove the old client copy to avoid choosing the wrong world later. Stunlock advises doing this through the in-game Load Game interface while V Rising is running.
Do not rely on manual deletion when Cloud Saves is enabled. A cloud synchronization process can restore files that were deleted directly in File Explorer. Select the old save in the game’s interface and remove it there, then confirm that the intended destination copy still works.
Keep an offline ZIP or USB backup even after cleanup. Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for an independent backup, especially before a game patch or the first server start after a patch.
Choosing the right transfer route
| Your situation | Use this route | Main compatibility check |
|---|---|---|
| You are replacing one private host with another. | ZIP the client save folder and extract it into the new host’s matching Saves or CloudSaves location. |
Extract into the correct client path without adding an extra folder level. |
| You are moving a client world to a dedicated server. | Copy the session folder into the server persistence path and launch with -saveName. |
Persistence version, folder name, GameSettingsPreset and settings overrides. |
| You want a portable backup only. | Copy the entire folder or create a ZIP on separate storage. | Verify that the archive opens and retain the original until tested. |
| You need to send the file over the internet. | Use Google Drive, Dropbox or WeTransfer. | Transfer the complete archive and preserve its contents. |
| You can meet in person or have limited upload bandwidth. | Use an external USB drive. | Safely eject the drive and keep an additional backup. |
Troubleshooting a missing or rejected save
The world does not appear in Load Game
- Return to the original computer and use Load Game → Go to Directory to identify the real folder.
- Check whether the save is under
Savesor the Steam-ID-specificCloudSavesdirectory. - Confirm that you copied the session folder, not only an individual
.save.gzfile. - If you transferred to a dedicated server, verify that the folder is below
Saves<persistence version>.
The dedicated server starts a new world
- Compare the folder name with the value after
-saveName, including capitalization and spelling. - Check that the server is using the intended default or
-persistentDataPathlocation. - Confirm that the persistence-version folder matches the version present in the server installation.
- Remove conflicting settings overrides and leave
GameSettingsPresetempty as directed for a copied world.
The server loads but settings are wrong
Look for a conflicting ServerGameSettings.json in the default or local override settings folders. The dedicated-server migration instructions expect the copied world’s settings to be used when the preset is empty and no competing settings file overrides them.

Cloud files reappear after deletion
Use the in-game Load Game interface to remove the old save while V Rising is running. Manual deletion can be undone by cloud synchronization.
A character appears to have lost progress
First distinguish world data from account-bound data. Castles, territories and map exploration belong to the transferred world. Inventory, levels, powers and other individual character data remain linked to the player’s Steam or PlayStation account. A folder transfer cannot reassign that account data to a different player.
Self-hosting versus a managed server
Self-hosting requires installing the V Rising Dedicated Server application from Steam’s Tools section, then configuring its persistence path and launch arguments. This gives you direct control over the save folder and migration process, but you are responsible for the machine, backups, updates and troubleshooting.
Stunlock’s November 27, 2024 hosting article identifies PocketHost as a service for renting and managing a V Rising server. A managed host can be appropriate if you do not want to maintain the dedicated-server application yourself; regardless of provider, keep your own downloadable backup so a hosting move does not depend on continued access to one machine.
Quick Recap
Final transfer checklist
- Used Load Game → Go to Directory to identify the exact world.
- Stopped the game or server from writing before copying.
- Backed up the complete session folder.
- Included the persistence-version folder and all required JSON and autosave files.
- Used a ZIP, cloud transfer or external USB drive without altering the archive contents.
- For a dedicated server, copied to
Saves<current persistence version>. - Matched
-saveNameto the folder name. - Set
GameSettingsPresetempty and removed conflicting settings overrides when migrating to a dedicated server. - Tested castles, territories and map status before deleting the source.
- Removed obsolete cloud-backed copies through the in-game interface, not by manual deletion alone.
