First choose whether it belongs on your Windows 11 client, a shared gateway server, a managed server, or a failover cluster; that choice affects how administrators reach it and which setup options matter.
Choose where Windows Admin Center will run
Windows Admin Center (WAC) is a browser-based tool for managing Windows systems. The installation host is the machine where you install WAC; the browser machine is where an administrator opens its web interface. Choose the deployment before downloading so you can prepare the right host, network access, and certificate.

Microsoft lists Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, 2025, and Server Semi-Annual Channel for gateway, managed-server, and failover-cluster installations. Domain controllers are not supported as WAC installation hosts. Microsoft advises against using WAC to manage locally the same server on which WAC is installed. Prepare the host and download the installer
- Sign in to the intended installation machine with administrator privileges or equivalent permissions.
- If you plan to use an existing TLS certificate, make sure it is a server-authentication certificate in the
LocalMachineMycertificate store. - Download the Windows Admin Center installer from Microsoft’s Evaluation Center. Microsoft also documents downloading it from PowerShell using the
https://aka.ms/WACdownloadlink.

Install with the graphical setup program
- On the chosen Windows host, run the downloaded installer as an administrator.
- Continue through the welcome, license, and privacy pages.
- Choose Express or Custom setup. Express selects network access and port settings based on the operating system. Custom setup lets you configure network access, ports, the TLS certificate and its thumbprint, endpoint FQDN, TrustedHosts mode, and WinRM over HTTPS.
- Select a TLS certificate. Microsoft’s guidance is: “Use a self-signed certificate for testing, but always use a certificate from a trusted certificate authority for production environments.” The installer-generated self-signed certificate expires after 60 days; use a trusted CA-issued certificate for a production gateway.
- Choose whether to install updates automatically. Microsoft says automatic installation is selected by default and is the recommended option.
- Set the diagnostic-data preference, review the ready-to-install page, and start installation. Select the option to launch Windows Admin Center when setup finishes, then sign in with administrator credentials.
Install on Server Core or from PowerShell
For Server Core or a PowerShell-driven installation, download the installer as shown above, then run the documented silent installation command:
Start-Process -FilePath '.WindowsAdminCenter.exe' -ArgumentList '/VERYSILENT' -WaitMicrosoft lists /Silent, /VerySilent, /HTTPSPortNumber, and /CertificateThumbprint among the installer arguments. The exact syntax and behavior can depend on the installer release; consult the current installation guide before using custom arguments. If the service needs to be started after setup, use an elevated PowerShell session:

Start-Service -Name WindowsAdminCenterConfigure access, ports, and outbound connectivity
Use the endpoint and port reported by setup or documented for your installed release rather than assuming every deployment uses the same default. Microsoft’s guidance gives port 6600 for local access on Windows client operating systems and port 443 for remote access on Windows Server. The installation-options page also shows https://localhost:6516 as a local-client example, while noting that modernized gateway port usage differs from older guidance. Verify your installation’s actual endpoint.
WAC communicates outbound securely over TCP 443. If a firewall or proxy restricts egress, allow the endpoints Microsoft lists for the gateway machine and browser machine as applicable; Microsoft’s network requirements page includes aka.ms for acquiring and maintaining WAC. For a shared gateway, administrators must be able to reach the gateway in a browser, and the gateway must be able to communicate with the systems it manages. Configure network and certificate settings to match your environment; merely reaching the gateway does not confer rights on managed servers.

- On a local-client installation, open Windows Admin Center from the Start menu. For a gateway installation, open the configured HTTPS endpoint from a browser that can reach the gateway.
- Sign in with administrator credentials.
- Confirm that the page loads over the expected HTTPS endpoint and that the account can access the intended managed systems.
- If the page does not load, check the endpoint and port displayed during installation, the host firewall and network path, and whether the Windows Admin Center service is running. In restricted networks, verify the documented outbound TCP 443 requirements.
Microsoft’s getting-started guidance covers opening WAC and beginning management. WAC is a separate download available at no additional cost beyond a valid Windows Server or Windows client license, according to Microsoft’s overview and FAQ. Non-preview versions can be updated through Microsoft Update or by manually downloading and installing a newer release.
