Download WildFly from the official WildFly downloads page, choose the server variant your application needs, and extract its ZIP or TAR.GZ archive. WildFly is an open-source Java application server in the JBoss project lineage; it is separate from Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (JBoss EAP).
Choose the WildFly distribution that fits your project
The WildFly 40 Getting Started Guide lists three server variants. Standard WildFly is the usual starting point; choose another variant only when its target or preview status matches your project’s needs.

These names reflect the WildFly 40 guide dated May 20, 2026; release numbers, available variants, and archive filenames can change. Check the downloads page for the current release and its filenames before downloading. The guide describes different Jakarta EE targets for the variants, so check the target needed by your application rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
Check Java before installing
WildFly requires Java SE. The WildFly 40 guide recommends the latest update of the current long-term-support Java release, but the version-specific minimum and recommendation are not established in the guide excerpt available here. Check the guide for the exact WildFly release you download before starting the server.

A separate official getting-started workflow for building and running a guided Maven application specifies Java 17 or later, preferably Java 21, and Maven. Those requirements apply to that development workflow; they do not establish a Java compatibility range for every WildFly release or make Maven necessary just to extract and launch the server archive.
Download and extract the archive
- Open the official WildFly downloads page.
- Select the release and variant that suit your project, then choose ZIP or TAR.GZ. Either format works on an operating system that supports it.
- Extract the downloaded archive to a directory where you want WildFly installed. The WildFly authors put the basic step simply: “Simply extract your chosen download to the directory of your choice.”
- Before launch, check the selected release’s guide and the extracted
bindirectory for current startup scripts and configuration instructions.
This archive route works on Windows, macOS, and Linux; the steps do not require a platform-specific installer. The actual startup command depends on the release and should be confirmed in its current documentation.

Start the server and continue with development
Use the scripts and configuration included with your extracted release, following its guide for startup. Older WildFly documentation gives standalone.bat as a Windows example and standalone.sh for Linux, Unix, or macOS, but those are version-15-era instructions—not a guarantee that the same commands apply unchanged to the release you downloaded.
For application development, WildFly’s documentation covers getting started, application development, cloud deployment, and provisioning. It also offers quickstarts with small example applications; check each quickstart’s release-specific requirements before following it. If you need a custom installation rather than the traditional archive, the WildFly 40 guide also describes provisioning with the WildFly Maven Plugin or Galleon CLI, as well as building a bootable JAR. On Linux, configuring a systemd service is an optional operational step after installation, not part of downloading the server.
