Download OBS Studio from the official OBS Project site, install the build for your operating system, and use its Auto-Configuration Wizard before adding a simple scene and connecting YouTube Live. Test the stream before your scheduled broadcast: OBS’s published system requirements are starting points, not a promise that a particular computer can stream smoothly.
How to download and install OBS for YouTube streaming
1. Check your computer and operating system
OBS Project lists these basic requirements on its System Requirements page, dated August 25, 2021:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Windows: Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU.
- macOS: macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later, an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU, and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU.
- Linux/Unix: An OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland.
These are baseline compatibility requirements, not a performance guarantee. OBS states: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” CPU load varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. The reliable way to assess your setup is to configure it and test it before going live.
2. Download OBS from the official site
Go to the official OBS Project download page and choose the build for your operating system. Open the downloaded installer or package, follow its prompts, and launch OBS. Avoid third-party download sites so you get the software from its publisher. This guide does not specify installer labels or version numbers, which can change.

How do I set up OBS for YouTube Live?
3. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard
On first launch, OBS may offer its Auto-Configuration Wizard. It tailors a starting configuration to your intended use and considers your hardware; for streaming, it also considers network conditions. If you dismissed it, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard to run it later. Treat the result as a starting point, not proof that the stream will be stable under real conditions. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends this route for beginners.
4. Create a basic scene and add sources
A scene is the layout you send to the stream; sources are the picture and sound elements inside it. OBS opens with a blank scene. Start with one scene and add only what viewers need, using the plus button in the Sources panel.

5. Verify microphone and desktop audio
OBS normally captures desktop audio and a microphone by default. Speak into the microphone or play a sound and watch the Audio Mixer meters. If the wrong device is selected or a meter does not move, open Settings → Audio and choose the intended input and output devices manually. Use the preview and a short test to confirm the stream has the sound you expect; seeing a meter move alone does not confirm how it sounds to viewers.

6. Choose an output that fits your computer and connection
Keep the wizard’s suggested configuration for your first test unless you have a specific reason to change it. Resolution and frame rate affect processing and network demands; OBS notes that 60 FPS can be more taxing than 30 FPS. Do not assume that a higher setting is better for your first stream. Test the selected output with your actual scene, and reduce the load if performance or connection problems appear.

8. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
- Select YouTube as the service if it is available in your version and connection flow. Otherwise, choose the option to use a stream URL or custom server and enter the server URL from YouTube.
- Copy the stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room into OBS’s stream key field. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or show it in a screen capture.
- Apply the settings and start the encoder stream from OBS when you are ready to test. Follow the Live Control Room prompts; for a scheduled stream, wait for YouTube’s preview and then select Go live.
The YouTube server URL and stream key belong in the encoder’s stream settings. If YouTube does not show a preview, check that the selected stream, URL, and key match, and that OBS is sending output.

Test OBS before your scheduled or public stream
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes instead of jumping straight into a first stream or recording. YouTube’s OBS Studio Overview Guide also supports checking the stream flow before broadcasting.
- Check that the preview shows the intended game, window, display, or camera and that no unwanted source covers it.
- Confirm the microphone and desktop-audio meters respond as expected; listen to the test if possible.
- Confirm YouTube receives the encoder signal and displays a preview in the Live Control Room.
- Watch for dropped or unstable output and excessive system load. If the test struggles, simplify the scene or lower resolution or frame rate, then test again.
For a scheduled YouTube stream, receiving the preview is not necessarily the same as making the broadcast public: wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live when ready.
Troubleshooting common OBS-to-YouTube problems
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| OBS opens, but the stream is slow or unstable. | Your computer may meet OBS’s baseline requirements without having enough capacity for the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene. | Run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard, simplify the scene, and test with a lower resolution or frame rate. A test is more informative than the baseline requirement alone. |
| Black or incorrect image in the preview. | The source may be missing, pointed at the wrong display or window, hidden, or unavailable through that capture method on your operating system. | Check the source selection and visibility, choose the intended capture source, and confirm the preview before streaming. |
| No microphone or desktop sound. | The wrong audio device may be selected or the source may not be producing audio. | Check the Audio Mixer meters, then choose the correct devices in Settings → Audio and run another test. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream. | The server URL or stream key may not match the stream selected in the Live Control Room; first-time Live activation may still be pending. | Copy the URL and key again from the correct YouTube stream, re-enter them in Settings → Stream, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| YouTube shows a preview, but the scheduled stream has not started publicly. | The scheduled broadcast still needs the Live Control Room action. | Wait for the preview, then click Go live in YouTube Studio when you intend to begin. |
