HTTrack normally creates a browsable directory tree, not a ZIP file. The archive is only as complete as the pages and assets the crawler can discover and access, so review its logs and test the local copy before sharing it.
What an “entire website” download can and cannot include
A mirror tool follows discoverable links and saves the responses it can fetch—HTML, images, stylesheets, scripts, PDFs and other files—while rewriting links for local browsing. It cannot guarantee capture of pages hidden behind forms, content generated only after application requests, inaccessible login areas, blocked responses or data that is never linked from the crawl.
Only download material you are authorized to copy. A mirror can reproduce copyrighted content and private data, and a large crawl can place significant load on a server. Check the site’s terms, your organization’s policy and applicable law before starting.
Choose the scope before you crawl
Start URL
Use the site’s final canonical URL, including HTTPS and any required path. If a URL redirects from an apex domain to www (or the reverse), starting at the destination avoids losing links during host filtering.

Host and path boundaries
HTTrack ordinarily stays on the starting host. Starting at a subdirectory generally keeps the crawl within that path. This is useful when you need one documentation section rather than an entire domain. External links are not followed by default.
External assets
Stylesheets, images, JavaScript and documents may come from a CDN or another host. Permit only the specific host or path needed for the pages you are saving. Broad external following can turn a focused job into an unexpectedly large crawl. HTTrack’s --near option can over-fetch an external host, so use it only when that expansion is intentional.
Install HTTrack and run a basic mirror
HTTrack is free GPL software. Its official homepage lists version 3.50-4 dated September 25, 2026. The command-line guide’s one-site recipe is:
httrack https://example.com/ --path mydirReplace https://example.com/ with the authorized starting URL and choose an output directory such as mydir. The graphical interfaces expose the same engine through a guided project workflow: create a project, enter the starting URL, accept the default same-host scope unless you need an explicit expansion, select the destination folder, and start the mirror.

Useful scope and behavior decisions
- Keep the default same-host behavior for a normal one-site copy.
- Add narrowly targeted external hosts when required assets are served elsewhere.
- Do not disable robots protections to work around a server response. A missing page may be restricted by
robots.txt, authorization or the server itself. - Keep the cache if you expect to resume an interrupted download or refresh it later.
Authenticated and restricted sections
HTTrack documents a cookie-file method for authorized authenticated sections, but cookies do not make every login flow compatible. Sites that require JavaScript challenges, rotating tokens, multifactor prompts or application API calls may still fail to mirror. Never copy someone else’s session cookie; use an account and authorization intended for the capture.
Verify that the mirror is usable
A completed progress indicator is not proof of an exhaustive copy. HTTrack records activity in hts-log.txt and problems in hts-err.txt. Review both files for refused, redirected or filtered URLs.
- Open the local entry page from the output folder.
- Follow representative internal links, including a deep page and a page in each important section.
- Check that stylesheets applied, images render and important PDFs or downloads open.
- Compare a short list of known URLs with the log and the local tree.
- Record exclusions or failures in a README stored beside the archive.
If a page works online but not locally, inspect whether it depends on a runtime API, a login, an absolute URL, a blocked host or a resource that was filtered.
Compress the completed folder into a ZIP
ZIP creation is a packaging step after mirroring. Preserve the top-level mirror folder so the recipient gets one tidy directory instead of a pile of files.

Windows
- Close applications that may still be writing into the mirror.
- In File Explorer, right-click the completed mirror folder.
- Choose Compress to ZIP file (or Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder, depending on Windows version).
- Give the archive a descriptive name and open it once to confirm the folder is inside.
macOS
- In Finder, select the mirror’s top-level folder.
- Control-click it and choose Compress.
- Open the resulting ZIP and verify that the top-level folder and entry page are present.
Linux and other Unix-like systems
zip -r website-mirror.zip mydir/The command must run after HTTrack has finished. For very large mirrors, ensure the destination has enough free space for both the folder and the ZIP; compression can temporarily require both copies.
HTTrack’s FAQ also mentions a shell system-command option that can direct downloads to tar or ZIP, but it does not provide a current, portable ZIP recipe. The separate, post-crawl archive step above is easier to audit and works independently of that option.
Resume, refresh and preserve older files
Keep HTTrack’s cache when a crawl is interrupted so the next run can resume rather than refetching everything. An update can remove local files that are not found during the new run. If you need to retain older files, the command-line guide documents --purge-old=0. Treat an updated mirror as a new version: test it, inspect the logs and create a new ZIP instead of silently overwriting the previous archive.
Common problems and fixes
The ZIP contains only a few pages
Cause: the starting path or host scope is narrower than expected, or most content is not linked. Fix: start at the canonical home page or the intended section, then add only the required host/path filters. Search-driven, unlinked and account-specific pages still require a separately authorized process.

Images, CSS or scripts are missing
Cause: assets are hosted on a CDN or another domain that was not permitted. Fix: identify the asset host in the browser’s page source or network details and allow only the relevant host/path, then rerun and check hts-log.txt.
Pages redirect or refuse to download
Cause: canonical redirects, robots rules, server policy, authentication or a bot check. Fix: use the final HTTPS URL, respect robots protections, confirm authorization and examine hts-err.txt. Do not attempt to bypass access controls.
The local page is blank or interactive features fail
Cause: content is rendered by client-side JavaScript or fetched from an API after the initial HTML. Fix: verify whether the required API responses and scripts were captured. A static mirror may not reproduce an application; save the relevant documents or use the site’s supported export instead.
An update deleted files I wanted to keep
Cause: the refresh did not encounter older files. Fix: restore the prior archive or rerun with --purge-old=0, then keep versioned ZIPs.

The archive is too large to transfer
Cause: the crawl includes high-resolution media, duplicated assets or unintended hosts. Fix: narrow the scope, exclude unnecessary file types or split the archive into documented parts. An external drive can help with transfer, but no particular capacity is required by HTTrack.

Choose the format based on the purpose: offline reading, handoff, or archival preservation. There is no universally best output.

Can HTTrack create the ZIP directly?
Its normal output is a folder tree. A separate operating-system ZIP step is the clearest portable workflow; HTTrack’s FAQ mentions shell-command output without giving a current universal ZIP recipe.
Will a mirror include pages that are not linked anywhere?
No. A crawler follows discoverable links and allowed resources, so unlinked, search-only or application-generated pages need a separate authorized capture method.
Should I delete the HTTrack cache after making the ZIP?
Keep it if you may resume or update the mirror. Delete it only after you are certain no further crawl work is needed and the ZIP has been verified.
