On Debian or Ubuntu, a PHP downgrade is a compatibility and dependency change, not just a different php command. Identify the distribution release, target PHP branch, active runtime (CLI, Apache, or PHP-FPM), and required extensions first. Then refresh APT, confirm that the branch is available for that release, install matching packages, switch each runtime separately, restart the affected service, and verify both command-line and web execution.

What a PHP downgrade changes
Linux commonly has several PHP entry points that can be on different versions at the same time:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- CLI: the interpreter used by shell commands, cron jobs, deployment scripts, and dependency managers.
- Apache module: PHP loaded directly by Apache through a versioned
libapache2-mod-phppackage. - PHP-FPM: a separate FastCGI service used by Nginx and commonly by Apache through a proxy.
Changing the CLI binary does not automatically change Apache or Nginx. A successful downgrade therefore has two parts: install a compatible package set and point every required SAPI at that set. Configuration is versioned as well. Debian-family packages use separate trees such as /etc/php/8.x/cli and /etc/php/8.x/apache2; PHP-FPM has its own versioned configuration and service.
The examples below use Debian-family package names and APT. Exact branch availability depends on your Linux distribution, release, repositories, and architecture. Do not apply an Ubuntu repository command to another distribution without checking that repository’s support matrix.

Choose the safest downgrade path
There are three practical approaches. Select one only after checking whether the target branch and all required extensions exist for the same operating-system release.
| Approach | Use it when | Main advantages | Main risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parallel version from a compatible repository | The target branch is packaged for your release and you want to retain the newer branch for testing or rollback. | Co-installable packages, easier rollback, distribution-style service management. | Third-party repositories are unofficial builds; repository support and extension coverage vary by release. |
| Exact APT package-version downgrade | The exact target package version and every tightly coupled dependency are still published for your release. | Reproduces a known package set without adding another repository. | APT may remove or downgrade many packages; one missing dependency can make the transaction fail. |
| Source build | No compatible binary package provides the required branch, patch release, extension, or server API. | Maximum control over compile-time features and installation prefix. | You own updates, service integration, security tracking, and compatibility testing. |
If the application only needs an older API or extension, first test whether a supported newer branch plus a code or configuration change solves the problem. A downgrade extends exposure to defects once the selected branch reaches end of life.

php -v
php --ini
dpkg -l | grep -E '^ii php'
cat /etc/os-release
Record the output in the change ticket. It tells you the current CLI branch, loaded configuration file, installed PHP packages, and operating-system release. Also record:
- Whether the application runs under Apache, Nginx with PHP-FPM, or both.
- The PHP branch and patch level required by the application or its dependency lock file.
- Extensions actually used, such as MySQL, cURL, XML, mbstring, GD, and ZIP.
- Service names, virtual hosts, container boundaries, scheduled jobs, and deployment users.
- Whether the host is a production system, staging host, or disposable test machine.
Back up application configuration, PHP configuration snippets, and the database before a production change. A package rollback cannot undo an application migration or a data-format change.
Check support and repository availability
PHP branches receive two years of active support followed by two years of critical-security-only support. After four years, a branch reaches end of life and is no longer supported. The current supported-versions table lists these security-support end dates:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| PHP branch | Security support ends | Implication on 15 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 8.2 | 31 December 2026 | Only a short remaining support window; schedule migration rather than treating it as a long-term destination. |
| 8.3 | 31 December 2027 | Supported, with a defined upgrade deadline. |
| 8.4 | 31 December 2028 | Supported for a longer period. |
| 8.5 | 31 December 2029 | Supported for the longest period in this table. |
These dates describe the PHP project’s branch policy, not the availability of packages for a particular Linux release. A distribution may stop publishing a branch earlier, and a third-party repository may support only selected Ubuntu LTS releases. Expanded Security Maintenance releases are not supported by the commonly used Ondřej Surý PHP PPA, so verify the exact release before relying on it. Third-party builds are unofficial; document the repository, distribution release, signing configuration, and who owns updates.

Method 1: install a parallel PHP branch
Parallel installation is generally the least disruptive way to test an older branch while keeping the current one available. The following planning commands use PHP 8.2 as an example; replace 8.2 with the branch you have confirmed is available.
php -v
php --ini
dpkg -l | grep -E '^ii php'
sudo apt update
apt-cache policy php8.2 php8.2-cli php8.2-fpm
apt-cache policy shows installed and candidate versions. If the target package has no candidate, stop. Do not force a package from a different Ubuntu or Debian release. Check the repository configuration and release support instead.
Install the core packages and matching extensions
sudo apt install php8.2-cli php8.2-common php8.2-fpm
Add only the extensions the application uses, with the same branch prefix where the repository provides versioned packages. A typical set may include packages corresponding to MySQL, cURL, XML, mbstring, GD, and ZIP. Inspect availability before installing:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Do not assume that installing php8.2-cli changes a web application. It installs a CLI interpreter and, in the FPM example, a separate service. Apache and Nginx still need to be directed to the matching runtime.
Switch the CLI interpreter
On Debian-family systems, select the desired binary with the alternatives mechanism. The interactive command is:
sudo update-alternatives --config php
php -v
php --ini
Select the path belonging to the target branch, then confirm that both the version and loaded CLI configuration changed. If the target binary is not registered, inspect the installed package paths and register it according to your distribution’s alternatives policy rather than replacing /usr/bin/php by hand.
Switch Apache
Apache’s module must match the PHP branch. Disable the currently enabled PHP module, enable the target module, and restart Apache. Module names are release-specific, so list installed modules first if you are unsure.

sudo a2query -m | grep php
sudo a2dismod php8.3
sudo a2enmod php8.2
sudo systemctl restart apache2
Use the actual old and target module names on your host. If the target branch is installed only as FPM, configure Apache to proxy to its FPM socket instead of enabling an Apache module. Check the restart result and logs before declaring success:
sudo systemctl status apache2 --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u apache2 -n 100 --no-pager
Switch Nginx to the target PHP-FPM socket
Nginx normally sends PHP requests to a versioned FPM socket. Find the target service and socket, then update the relevant server block’s fastcgi_pass setting. A common Debian-family pattern is a socket under /run/php/, but use the path actually created on your host.
systemctl list-units --type=service 'php*-fpm.service'
sudo systemctl status php8.2-fpm --no-pager
ls -l /run/php/
After editing the server configuration, test and reload Nginx:
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
sudo journalctl -u php8.2-fpm -n 100 --no-pager
A reload applies the Nginx routing change, while the FPM service must be running and listening on the socket named in the configuration. A “502 Bad Gateway” usually means the socket path, permissions, service state, or pool configuration does not match.

Verify the web runtime safely
Use an application health endpoint where possible. Otherwise, create a temporary diagnostic page containing only:
<?php phpinfo(); ?>
Protect it with access controls, request it over the intended virtual host, confirm the PHP version, SAPI, configuration file, and extensions, and remove it immediately. A CLI result alone does not prove that Apache or Nginx is using the same branch.
Method 2: request an exact APT package version
Use an exact downgrade only when the target version and every tightly coupled PHP package are present for the same distribution release. First inspect candidates and repository versions:

apt-cache policy php-cli php-common php-fpm
apt-cache madison php-cli
APT accepts the form package=version. In practice, the PHP core, SAPI package, and extensions must remain compatible. If a dependency still has a newer revision, install the matching dependency first and repeat the exact-version request, following APT’s proposed transaction carefully.
Recommended Free Tools
sudo apt install php-common=VERSION php-cli=VERSION php-fpm=VERSION
Replace VERSION only with a version printed by apt-cache policy or apt-cache madison; it is not a placeholder to leave in a command. APT warns that it is downgrading and asks for confirmation. Read the complete removal and downgrade list before answering.
When to stop the transaction
- APT proposes removing application-required extensions.
- A large part of the desktop or server stack would be removed.
- The candidate comes from a different Ubuntu or Debian release.
- Required packages are available only at incompatible revisions.
- The transaction would replace packages outside the planned PHP change.
Cancel, restore the repository state, and test on staging or a disposable virtual machine. Ordinary APT priorities do not normally trigger downgrades automatically; version-selection mechanisms can do so, which is why package policy and the proposed transaction must be reviewed manually.
Method 3: build PHP from source
The PHP project documents source installation for operators who need control over features, extensions, or server APIs unavailable in a distribution package. It is the fallback, not the first choice for a routine branch switch.
Plan the installation boundary
- Use a deliberate prefix separate from distribution-managed
/usr/bin/php. - Record the exact PHP patch release, compiler toolchain, configure options, enabled extensions, and
php.ini. - Create a service unit and define how Apache or Nginx will reach the resulting FPM process or module.
- Define an alternatives policy if operators must invoke the custom CLI binary.
- Document how security fixes will be discovered, rebuilt, tested, and deployed.
A source build is not maintained automatically by the distribution package manager. Keep the build recipe and artifacts so that the same branch can be rebuilt reproducibly, and test the application and extensions before switching production traffic.
Switching and verifying every SAPI
Use this checklist after any installation or downgrade:
- CLI version: run
php -vand confirm the intended branch and patch level. - CLI configuration: run
php --ini; confirm the main file and scanned directory belong to the target branch. - CLI extensions: run
php -mand compare the result with the application’s requirements. - Apache integration: confirm the enabled module or FPM proxy points to the target branch, then restart Apache.
- Nginx integration: confirm
fastcgi_passnames the target FPM socket, runnginx -t, and reload Nginx. - FPM state: check the target service, pool logs, socket ownership, and listening path.
- Web request: use a protected health endpoint or temporary
phpinfo()page, then remove any diagnostic file. - Application tests: run the dependency manager, automated tests, queue workers, cron jobs, and a representative request on staging before production.
- Logs: inspect Apache, Nginx, and PHP-FPM logs immediately after the restart or reload.
- Upgrade controls: document repository files, package holds, and the intended branch so unattended upgrades do not silently switch the runtime.
Common failure modes and recovery
apt-cache policy shows no target candidate
The branch is not published for that operating-system release or the repository metadata is stale. Run sudo apt update, check the distribution codename and repository support, and do not mix packages from another release. If no compatible binary exists, evaluate a supported branch or an isolated source build.
Best Value
The CLI changed but the website did not
CLI and web SAPIs are independent. Inspect Apache’s enabled module or the Nginx fastcgi_pass socket, then restart or reload the relevant service. Verify through a web request rather than relying on php -v.
Extensions are missing after the downgrade
Extensions are versioned packages and may not have been installed with the core interpreter. Check apt-cache policy for each matching extension, install the target-branch package, and confirm it in the SAPI that serves the application. A module shown by CLI may still be absent from FPM or Apache because each SAPI has its own configuration tree.
Apache fails to restart
Check systemctl status apache2 and the journal for a module mismatch, duplicate loading, syntax error, or unavailable library. Revert the module change if necessary, restore the previous configuration backup, and restart the known-good branch before troubleshooting further.
Nginx returns 502
Confirm that the target FPM service is running, the socket exists, and the Nginx configuration names exactly that socket. Check socket permissions and the FPM pool log. If the old socket is still configured, update the server block and run nginx -t before reloading.
APT wants to remove too much
Answer no. Capture the proposed transaction, inspect package candidates and repository priorities, and test the change away from production. A PHP downgrade that removes required modules or unrelated server components is not a safe downgrade.
A later unattended upgrade switches branches
Record the repository and package-selection policy, inspect holds and unattended-upgrade rules, and monitor the runtime after maintenance. Do not create undocumented holds that prevent security fixes; make the exception, owner, expiry, and migration plan explicit.

Before production, define the reverse operation: which package branch, module, FPM socket, configuration backup, and service command restore the previous state. Keep the previous branch installed when using the parallel method until the application has passed its acceptance tests. For an exact downgrade, record the original apt-cache policy output and package versions so the previous transaction can be reconstructed.
If the target branch is already end of life, treat the downgrade as a time-limited compatibility bridge. Set a migration date, test a supported branch in parallel, update incompatible dependencies or extensions, and remove the legacy runtime when traffic has moved. A branch with only a few months of security support left should not become the permanent production baseline.
Decision guide
| Your situation | Preferred action |
|---|---|
| The target branch is available from a repository for this exact OS release and you need an easy rollback. | Install it in parallel, switch CLI and web SAPIs separately, and retain the newer branch during testing. |
| The repository contains the exact package versions and all dependencies, with no cross-release mixing. | Use an exact APT transaction after reviewing every proposed change. |
| No binary package supplies the required branch or build features. | Use an isolated source build with a documented service and security-update process. |
| The application can be adapted to a supported branch. | Prefer the compatibility fix over a downgrade that increases long-term security and maintenance risk. |
Final verification before declaring success
A downgrade is complete only when the intended branch is reported by the CLI, the intended configuration tree is loaded, the web server reaches the matching Apache module or FPM socket, required extensions load in that SAPI, and the application’s tests and representative requests pass. Keep the repository and package decisions documented, monitor logs after the change, and attach an upgrade deadline whenever the selected branch has limited or no remaining security support.
