Why you can’t downgrade normally (OTA vs. firmware changes)
Android updates delivered by OTA update packages are designed to move forward (from an older build to a newer one). Rolling back across major version boundaries (Android 15 → Android 14) usually requires replacing boot-critical partitions and system images.
On a Pixel, that means you’re typically relying on the bootloader + fastboot flashing workflow. Google also provides official factory images, which are the safest way to get back to a known-good state.

What you need before you start
- A supported Pixel model (Pixel 8/8 Pro, Pixel 7/7 Pro, Pixel 6/6 Pro, Pixel 5, etc.). The exact steps are similar, but the factory image must match your device.
- Bootloader access: Downgrading via flashing generally requires an unlocked bootloader.
- Official Android 14 factory image for your exact Pixel model and build branch.
- A computer with the Android SDK Platform-Tools installed.
- A USB cable that reliably supports data transfer (not just charging).
- Backup plan: bootloader unlock + flashing usually wipes data.
Check your device model and build
On your Pixel, go to Settings → About phone. Record the model and your current build number. You’ll need the correct Android 14 factory image that matches your device.
Install Platform-Tools
You’ll use adb and fastboot. Get them from Google’s Android Platform-Tools package and unzip it, then use the extracted folder as your command location.
Understand the wipe
Unlocking the bootloader will wipe your data. Flashing a factory image with flash-all typically wipes again. If you care about the content on the phone, back it up before proceeding.

Method 1: Flash the Android 14 factory image with fastboot (recommended)
This is the most transparent and repeatable approach. You download the exact factory image for your Pixel model and flash it using fastboot scripts.
Method 2: Use Google Android Flash Tool (browser-based)
Android Flash Tool can flash system images through a browser-based interface. It still uses the same underlying flashing process, so your device must be eligible (bootloader state and permissions matter).
Step-by-step: fastboot factory image downgrade
- Back up your Pixel (if possible). Use Google backup and/or copy important photos/files to a computer.
- Enable Developer options: go to Settings → About phone, then tap Build number 7 times.
- Enable USB debugging: Settings → System → Developer options → USB debugging.
- Connect the Pixel to your computer via USB.
- Reboot into bootloader:
- Open a terminal/command prompt on your computer.
- Run:
adb reboot bootloader
- Unlock the bootloader (if locked):
- Bootloader should show a fastboot screen.
- Run:
fastboot flashing unlock - On the phone, confirm the unlock action using the volume/power controls.
- Download the correct Android 14 factory image for your exact Pixel model and extract it into a folder on your computer.
- Confirm required files exist in the extracted folder (you should see scripts like
flash-all/flash-all.shdepending on your OS). - Flash Android 14:
- In the extracted factory image folder, run the script suitable for your OS:
- Windows:
flash-all.bat - macOS/Linux:
chmod +x flash-all.shthen./flash-all.sh
- Windows:
- Let it complete. Do not disconnect the cable.
- In the extracted factory image folder, run the script suitable for your OS:
- First boot: the phone may take 5–15 minutes to boot after a factory flash.
If you hit a compatibility mismatch
If you downloaded the wrong factory image (wrong model or wrong branch), the flash scripts can fail, or the phone may not boot correctly. Always verify the exact Pixel device name and build targets before you start.
Step-by-step: Android Flash Tool downgrade
- Backup data first. Flashing can wipe data depending on your configuration.
- Enable USB debugging on the Pixel: Settings → System → Developer options → USB debugging.
- Connect the Pixel to the computer with a reliable USB cable.
- Open Android Flash Tool in a supported browser.
- Authorize the device when prompted on the phone (USB debugging prompt).
- Put the Pixel into bootloader when requested (the tool typically guides you). You can use
adb reboot bootloader. - Unlock bootloader if required when the tool indicates it’s needed. (If your bootloader is locked and you don’t unlock it, flashing can’t proceed.)
- Select the correct device and build and choose the Android 14 system image option that matches your Pixel.
- Start flashing and wait for completion. Keep the phone connected and power stable.
- Let it reboot into Android 14 and finish setup.
Android Flash Tool can be faster to follow, but fastboot flashing remains the most reliable when you need full control or you want to retry a single partition step.

Common gotchas and how to fix them
Most failures come from bootloader state, wrong image files, USB instability, or interrupted flashing. Use these targeted checks before you start over.
Bootloader won’t unlock
- Check OEM unlocking: Settings → Developer options → enable OEM unlocking.
- Verify account requirements: some Pixels enforce additional verification depending on security policies.
- Try a different USB port/cable: poor connections can interrupt unlock steps.
Fastboot commands fail
- Confirm fastboot sees the device:
fastboot devices. If it returns nothing, reinstall/refresh Platform-Tools and drivers (Windows especially). - Reboot into bootloader and reconnect, then re-check
fastboot devices.
Flash-all gets stuck or reboots mid-process
- Do not disconnect the cable during flashing.
- Use a USB 2.0/standard port if your setup has unstable high-speed hubs.
- If the script repeatedly fails at the same command, you may need to re-download the factory image (corrupted ZIP is common).
Device boots but keeps looping (bootloop)
- Re-check you downloaded the correct Pixel model and Android 14 build.
- Flash again from scratch using the same factory image ZIP you downloaded.
- If you only flashed system but missed boot-critical images, use the full
flash-allworkflow rather than partial flashes.
Wi‑Fi, SIM, or Bluetooth issues after rollback
- First, ensure the phone completed a clean first boot and finished setup.
- Toggle Airplane mode, reboot, and then check network settings.
- If problems persist, a full factory reflash is usually cleaner than chasing one partition.
What to do about your data (backup and restore)
Factory flashing wipes data. If you’re moving back to Android 14 because an update caused problems, it’s smart to treat the process like a fresh setup.
Recommended backup approach
- Photos & videos: verify Google Photos sync is complete, or copy to a computer.
- Two-factor authentication: ensure you have access to recovery methods (backup codes, authenticator migration options).
- Messages: check whether your SMS/RCS backup is enabled and supported on your setup.
- Files: manually copy important documents to a computer or cloud storage.
Video: what to record so your downgrade video actually helps people
The title includes Video, so if you’re publishing a walkthrough, record the steps that viewers commonly struggle with. Your goal isn’t just to show it working once—it’s to show the exact inputs and prompts.
- Phone model + build: show Settings → About phone so viewers confirm they’re downloading the right Android 14 factory image.
- Developer options + USB debugging: capture the exact toggles.
- Bootloader screen: show the fastboot/bootloader interface and the unlock confirmation screen.
- The command you run: record the terminal line (for example,
adb reboot bootloaderandfastboot flashing unlock). - The flash script running: show
flash-allprogress and highlight where it downloads/finishes (without rushing). - First boot time: mention how long it took before the setup screen appeared.
If you show errors, also show the exact text that appears on screen. Viewers can match that output to the troubleshooting section for faster fixes.

Alternatives if you can’t flash
If you can’t unlock the bootloader (policy restrictions, carrier constraints, warranty requirements, or security lock), you may not have a safe downgrade path. In that case, consider:
- Wait for an Android 15 patch that fixes the issue you hit. OTA updates are the safest route when bootloader unlock isn’t practical.
- Use a secondary device or test environment (a spare phone) if your goal is app testing rather than fixing a daily driver.
- Check for an official Android 14 OTA (rare once Android 15 is installed). Even then, major rollbacks aren’t typically supported the way forward OTAs are.
Bottom Line
To downgrade from Android 15 to Android 14 on a Pixel, you generally need to unlock the bootloader and flash the official Android 14 factory image. This isn’t a one-click OTA rollback, but it’s the most dependable way to restore stability.
If you follow the correct model-specific factory image and keep the device connected throughout flashing, you’ll avoid most bootloops and script failures. Record the prompts and exact commands if you’re making the video, since that’s what helps others succeed.

Can I downgrade using an OTA package from Android 14?
Typically no for major version rollbacks. Android’s update mechanism is designed for forward movement, while rollback requires firmware-level flashing.
How do I find the correct Android 14 factory image for my Pixel?
Match your factory image download to your exact Pixel model and build target. Check Settings → About phone for your device details, then download the Android 14 package intended for that device.
Why does flash-all fail on Windows or macOS?
Common causes include incorrect drivers, fastboot devices returning nothing, corrupted downloads, or using the wrong device’s factory image. Verify each step before retrying.
