How to Do Keyword Research with AI Agents and Google Search Console

Learn how to combine Google Search Console’s query and page data with an AI agent, verify its method, and avoid treating incomplete search data as total demand.

Use Google Search Console (GSC) to see which queries and pages are already appearing in Google Search, then use an AI agent to organize and interpret that evidence. The agent can help identify patterns, but GSC data is neither a complete list of keywords nor proof of total demand, search intent, or the impact an edit will have.

What GSC and an AI agent each contribute

GSC’s Performance report connects a property’s Google Search activity with queries, pages, dates, devices, and other available dimensions. Google says the Search Analytics API exposes the data available in that report. An AI agent can retrieve, compare, group, and explain those observations; its interpretation is a separate layer, not additional Google data.

This makes the method useful for questions grounded in your site’s existing visibility: which queries received impressions but relatively few clicks, which pages appear for related queries, or how query and page performance changed between periods. These are ways to analyze the available data, not strategies Google guarantees will improve rankings.

Run a traceable keyword-research workflow

  1. Define the property, period, and decision

Choose the GSC property and date range, then specify what you need to decide. For example, you might investigate queries with impressions but weak click performance, find the pages associated with a query theme, or compare the same dimensions across two periods. Keep the question narrow enough to retrieve and review the relevant rows.

  2. Retrieve the Performance data

Use the Performance report or the Search Analytics API. The API supports dimensions and filters, including query and page, and requires a date range. For implementation details, see Google’s Search Analytics API guide and query reference.

  3. Check the date range before adding complexity

Google’s API guide recommends first querying with dates and date as the only dimension to check whether data exists for the requested period. Add dimensions and filters only after that basic check succeeds. The guide also describes fetching larger result sets in batches.

  4. Ask the agent to expose its method

Give the agent a specific analysis request and require it to report the property, dates, dimensions, filters, and aggregation it used. Ask it to preserve the source rows or provide a summary that can be traced back to them. It should separate observed metrics from its recommendations and label assumptions rather than presenting them as facts.

For example, ask it to identify query-page combinations with impressions and comparatively weak click performance in a selected period, return the rows supporting each finding, and explain how it reached each recommendation. Do not treat an unexplained ranking, score, or keyword list as a result you can verify.

  5. Check the page and the search intent

Review promising query themes against the page that appears for them and the likely need behind the search. An impression or click is evidence about your property’s observed Google Search performance; on its own, it does not establish total market demand, commercial value, conversion potential, or that changing a page will cause a ranking or traffic increase.

  6. Recheck comparable data after a change

After publishing an edit, compare periods using consistent dimensions and filters where possible. Allow for data latency and incomplete results. Avoid repeatedly requesting broad, grouped datasets without a reason: Google documents that API load can rise with larger date ranges and with grouping or filtering by query and page. Consult the live Search Analytics API usage limits page before relying on exact quota details; Google lists load, QPS, QPM, and QPD quota categories, and that page was last updated August 28, 2025.

Know what the data leaves out

Query tables are not a complete keyword universe

Some low-frequency queries are anonymized and withheld from GSC query tables for privacy. Google’s October 2022 explanation says anonymized queries remain included in chart totals unless the report is filtered by query, which can change the aggregation. As a result, a query missing from a table is not proof that nobody searched for it. See Google’s explanation of Search Console performance data.

API results can be incomplete

The Search Analytics API returns top rows rather than guaranteeing every row. Results are sorted by clicks, with tied rows ordered arbitrarily. Google’s October 2022 post described an export limit of up to 50,000 rows per day per site per search type for the API and Looker Studio connector at that time. That is a dated published limit, not a guarantee that every property or current implementation can retrieve that volume; check current documentation before designing an export around it.

More filters and grouping can cost more

Google’s API limits documentation says query load can increase with the date range and with grouping or filtering by page and query, particularly when both are used. Retrieve only the data needed for the decision, and check current limits before scaling repeated or automated requests.

How to judge an agent’s output

Search Console supplies observations; the agent supplies an interpretation. Assess the two separately before acting:

  • Provenance: Can you see the property, date range, dimensions, and filters behind the result?
  • Completeness: Does the agent acknowledge privacy filtering and top-row limits instead of claiming to have found every query?
  • Reproducibility: Can you or a colleague rerun the query and inspect the supporting rows?
  • Decision relevance: Does the recommendation connect specific query evidence to a particular page and reader need?

Be cautious of third-party tools that claim access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems, or promise ranking success. Google’s guidance on generative AI features in Search says to judge vendor advice against official guidance; an agent’s explanation is not privileged insight into how Google ranks pages.

What GSC’s generative AI report can—and cannot—show

Google Search Console has a separate generative AI performance report for impressions from generative AI features in Search, along with pages receiving impressions and originating country and device. Google’s Help page says the report’s rollout reached all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. It uses Web search type data and is subject to the usual Performance report limitations. A property may not see it if it has insufficient impressions or is excluded from generative AI features. See Google’s generative AI performance report help page.

This report can add a view of discovery through those features, but it does not turn GSC into a complete keyword-demand database or establish why a page appeared. Interpret its metrics within the report’s stated scope and limitations.
