Affiliate marketing keyword research starts with a reader’s problem—not a search-volume number. Find phrases that describe what your audience needs, check what kind of page searchers expect, and prioritize topics where you can provide a useful answer and a genuinely relevant offer.
Start with the reader and the problem
Before opening a keyword tool, define who the page is for, what that person is trying to do, and what product or service could honestly help. A query is a good affiliate-content candidate only when the audience need and the potential recommendation belong together.

For example, a site serving first-time home coffee brewers might explore questions about choosing a grinder, dialing in a shot, or comparing brewing methods. A product recommendation may fit some of those needs; a hands-on tutorial may fit others. Do not choose a topic just because a tool shows a large search estimate or advertising cost.

Build a seed list from real questions
Write down the phrases your audience might use when describing its needs. Look at reader conversations, support questions, product use cases, and the vocabulary common in your niche. Include both beginner and experienced formulations: people with different levels of familiarity may describe the same problem differently.

Turn each underlying problem into several question forms, such as “how do I…,” “which one…,” and “what is the difference between….” These are brainstorming prompts, not measured search queries. Google recommends anticipating variations in the words people might use; its language-matching systems can also connect relevant content to queries without every exact variation appearing on the page. Google’s SEO Starter Guide explains both points.
Expand ideas and collect demand evidence
Use Keyword Planner for search-advertising estimates
Google Ads Keyword Planner can suggest related terms and provide monthly-search estimates and advertising cost estimates. To explore ideas, use its “Discover new keywords” route with your seed phrases and, when useful, a relevant site URL. You can also enter an existing keyword list for search-volume and forecast estimates. Google describes these capabilities in its Keyword Planner help.
Rank #2
These figures are built for Search campaign research, not organic-ranking or affiliate-income predictions. Forecasts depend on campaign assumptions such as spend; advertising costs indicate advertiser activity, not proof that a searcher will buy through an affiliate link. Account access and billing requirements can vary with account state and change over time, so check the current Google Ads setup if you cannot access the tool.

As you collect ideas, note the source and context of each demand signal: tool estimates, geography or language settings where available, and any trend or first-party performance data you have. Do not treat a tool’s number as a universal threshold for selecting or rejecting a topic. The supplied material contains no defined query set or geography from which a representative volume figure could be reported.

Identify intent and choose the right page
Read each phrase, then inspect the current search results. Ask what a searcher appears to want: instructions, alternatives, an evaluation of one product, or help deciding what to buy. This is an editorial judgment to validate against the results, not a universal intent score or a guarantee of conversion.
Match the page to that need. A “how to” query may call for a tutorial; a comparison query may call for a clearly scoped comparison; a product-specific query may suit a review or recommendation if you can support it. Group phrases only when one useful page can satisfy the underlying need. If two phrases call for substantially different answers, plan separate pages rather than forcing them together.

Prioritize a portfolio, not a single metric
Compare candidate topics across several considerations. A practical shortlist should account for:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Audience relevance: Does the query address a problem your readers actually have?
- Page fit: Can you make the page’s purpose clear and deliver the type of answer the search results suggest?
- Demand evidence: What is the source and context of the evidence, and how much confidence does it justify?
- Realistic competition: Can your site contribute expertise, examples, or useful coverage that gives it a plausible place in the results?
- Commercial fit: Is there a relevant product or service that could help without distorting the answer?
Cost-per-click or advertiser interest can be context, but neither establishes organic ranking potential nor predicts affiliate conversion. No single volume or cost figure proves a topic will rank or earn revenue. A balanced group of topics is more useful than a list selected by one tool metric.

Check product relevance before planning a recommendation
For a physical product topic, search the relevant marketplace for an item that genuinely addresses the reader’s problem. Treat a phrase such as “affiliate marketing keyword research book” as a marketplace search, not evidence that a suitable current listing exists. Check the edition, relevance, availability, and claims before linking; no particular book listing is established by the available sources.
If you use Amazon Associates, its help explains how to find products and create tagged links with supported tools such as SiteStripe or Mobile Get Link. Product eligibility and availability depend on the marketplace and may change. Review the current local program terms before publishing or running campaigns. In particular, the Amazon Associates Participation Requirements restrict certain paid-search placements, including use of proprietary terms and advertisements that send people directly or through a redirect to Amazon. Amazon’s product search help describes its product-discovery and tagged-link mechanisms.
Turn the shortlist into a content plan
- Define one reader outcome per page. State what the reader should understand or be able to do after reading.
- Choose the page type from intent. Let the need and search results guide whether the page is a tutorial, comparison, review, or recommendation.
- Use natural wording in prominent places. Make the title, heading, and descriptive text clear about the subject; include relevant vocabulary where it helps readers understand the page.
- Publish for people, then observe performance. Google’s Search Essentials recommend “helpful, reliable, people-first content.” Meeting its requirements does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page.
- Revise using observed results. Use Search Console or other first-party performance data after publication to see how the page performs and adjust the content plan. Google identifies Search Console as a way to understand a site’s performance in Search; its documentation overview is a starting point.
Use keywords without writing for a keyword counter
Make the page’s topic and purpose clear, but do not repeat a phrase mechanically or add variations that do not help the reader. Google says its systems may understand how a page relates to a query even when the exact wording is absent; it also warns that excessive repetition is tiring and that keyword stuffing violates its spam policies. Google Search does not use the meta keywords tag, according to the SEO Starter Guide.
