For a strict standing barbell overhead press, set the bar at upper-chest height, brace your trunk, and press the bar up and slightly back until it is over your center of gravity. Keep your legs still and lower the bar under control to your shoulders.
Set up the rack and your stance
- Clear the lifting area. Remove tripping hazards and set the bar on rack hooks around upper-chest height, so you can unrack it without reaching or making an exaggerated squat. The CSCCa barbell overhead press guide recommends safety straps at chest height when lifting inside a full rack.
- Take a stable stance. Stand with your feet about hip-width apart and toes pointing forward.
- Grip and position the bar. Hold it just outside shoulder width. At the starting position, keep your elbows beneath your wrists and your forearms roughly vertical. The CSCCa guide also cues scapular retraction in its setup; treat that as its coaching cue, not a requirement that fits every lifter identically.
- Brace before unracking and pressing. Tighten your abdominal wall and inhale before you initiate the lift. Keep your trunk and lower body firm throughout the repetition.
Press the bar overhead
Extend your elbows and drive the bar upward and slightly back. Keep your body rigid rather than leaning or using your legs to add force. At the top, finish with your elbows extended and the bar over your center of gravity. The CSCCa guide cues exhaling after the bar clears the sticking point.

Lower under control
Bring the bar back down to the starting position at your shoulders in a controlled manner. Do not drop it or let the descent pull you out of position.
Correct common form errors
- Elbows drift out of position: Reset with elbows beneath your wrists and forearms roughly vertical before pressing.
- Your legs drive the bar: Keep your lower body still for a strict press. Intentional leg drive makes it a different variation, such as a push press.
- The bar finishes forward: Think “up and slightly back” on the way up, aiming to finish with the bar over your center of gravity.
Equipment and practical safety
The exercise-specific guide lists a barbell and rack for this lift. A barbell is not something every reader needs to buy; you can use equipment at a gym. If you press inside a full rack, follow the CSCCa guide’s recommendation to position safety straps at chest height and keep the surrounding area clear. That guide says the exercise does not require a spotter, but that is its recommendation for the exercise—not a universal rule for every load, lifter, or training setup.

Strength-training fundamentals also include stable positioning, appropriate resistance, controlled movement speed and competent supervision, as discussed in the NSCA’s position statements and its Basics of Strength and Conditioning Manual. If you cannot control a load overhead, use a suitable regression or seek qualified coaching rather than forcing the lift; the manual describes dumbbell shoulder raises within a broader shoulder progression for athletes who cannot stabilize a weight overhead. These general technique sources do not establish a universal pain threshold or provide an individualized assessment for pain, injury history, or medical conditions.
How the strict press differs from other variations
The CSCCa guide also names seated, one-arm and alternating dumbbell overhead presses, the landmine press, push jerk and split jerk. They differ in implement, body position, use of leg drive or whether one or both arms work. Push jerks and split jerks use different techniques from the strict press described here; they are not ways to keep a repetition strict while using the legs. The cited sources do not establish that one variation produces better outcomes than another.
