What a Discord DM Is (and When You Can Use It)
A DM is a conversation you hold directly with another Discord user. In most cases, you don’t need to be in the same server, but the person you’re contacting must allow the contact method (and you must have the right account access).
Discord also uses related concepts like message requests and blocked users. Those can affect what you see and whether you can message them normally.

Prerequisites Before You Try to DM
- Your Discord account is signed in (check you’re on the correct account before troubleshooting).
- You know how to find them: either their username + discriminator style identifier (legacy) or their current display name and tag, or you have a direct profile link.
- They aren’t blocking you and their privacy settings allow incoming messages.
- You can access their profile (if they restrict discovery, search may not show them).
Also remember that Discord usernames can be similar. Make sure you’re selecting the right profile—message the wrong person is the most common “I DM’d them but it’s not the right chat” mistake.
How to DM Someone on Discord (All Platforms)
Use the platform steps that match where you’re logged in. The UI is slightly different across web, desktop, and mobile, but the underlying flow is the same: open a profile → start a chat → send your first message.
Web Browser (discord.com)
Start a DM from your browser when you’re on desktop but prefer discord.com over the app.
- Go to
https://discord.comand sign in. - On the left sidebar, click Home (or just use the left panel) and locate Direct Messages.
- Click the + New Message button (it may appear as a plus icon next to DMs).
- In the search box, type the person’s username (and, if needed, their tag/identifier).
- Select the correct user from the results.
- Click Message (or DM depending on layout).
- Type your message in the chat box and press Enter to send.
Windows, macOS, Linux Desktop App
The desktop app is usually the fastest way to start a DM because search and sidebar navigation are consistent.
- Open Discord on your computer and sign in.
- On the left sidebar, click Home to show your DM area.
- Click New Message (plus icon) next to Direct Messages.
- Type the user’s name in the Search field.
- Select the right profile from the dropdown results.
- Click Message to open the DM thread.
- Send your first message by typing in the input field and pressing Enter.
iPhone and iPad (iOS)
On iOS, DM access is in the bottom navigation. If you’re in a server, you can still start a DM from the member/profile view.
- Open the Discord app on iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Home at the bottom of the screen (house icon).
- Tap New Message (usually a chat bubble or plus icon).
- Search for the user by username.
- Tap the correct user profile.
- Tap Message to open the DM conversation.
- Type your message and tap Send (paper plane icon).
Android
Android uses the same general layout as iOS, but the placement of icons can vary slightly by app version.
- Open Discord on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap Home (bottom navigation).
- Tap New Message (plus/chat icon).
- Use the search field to find the user.
- Tap their profile in the results.
- Tap Message to start the DM.
- Type and send your message using the send button.

Start from Search Results
When you search a name, Discord often shows a profile result you can open. From their profile, choose Message to begin the DM.
This is useful when the person’s account exists but your DM search doesn’t immediately show the right entry.
Start from a Server Member List
If you and the person share a server, you can open their profile from the server and then choose to DM.
- Open the server.
- Open the Members list (sometimes under a people icon).
- Find the user, tap/click their name.
- Select Message or DM.
Not everyone appears in every view (privacy settings can hide member discovery), but it’s a reliable option when it works.

Start from a Shared Message Mention
If you have a message where they mentioned you or posted publicly (in a channel you share), you may be able to click their name and choose Message.
From the chat view, Discord typically shows the user profile; from there you can start a DM if allowed.
DM Settings, Privacy, and Permissions
Discord DMs aren’t always “open season.” Privacy controls can change whether you see the message button, whether it becomes a request, and whether your messages deliver normally.
Friend Requests vs Direct Messages
Depending on their account settings, you might be able to DM them directly, or Discord might treat your first contact as a request. Either way, your message may not be “fully delivered” until the user approves it.

Blocked Users and What You’ll See
If the person blocks you, you typically won’t be able to message them normally. Common symptoms include missing Message buttons, failing to open a DM, or messages that never show as delivered.
Discord doesn’t always display a clear “you are blocked” message, so you may need to test other indicators (like whether the chat opens at all).
Message Requests
Message requests are Discord’s way of filtering initial DMs based on privacy controls. If you send a DM and it’s treated as a request, the recipient may need to approve it before it appears in their main inbox.

Server Privacy Won’t Override DM Controls
Being in the same server doesn’t guarantee you can DM. Server permissions manage what you can do inside channels; user privacy governs DMs.
If DM is blocked or restricted, you’ll need to use the method the other user allows (or ask them to initiate contact).

Troubleshooting: When You Can’t DM Someone
If the message button is missing or sending fails, don’t guess—use the checks below in order.

You Can’t Find the Person
- Double-check spelling and identifier (especially if the account is similar to another).
- Try searching from a shared server member list instead of global DM search.
- Ensure you’re searching inside the correct Discord account session (web vs desktop sometimes differs by login).
The Message Button Is Missing
Missing Message usually points to one of these issues: their privacy settings restrict DMs, they blocked you, or your account can’t open their profile for messaging.
Try opening their profile from a shared context (server members, mention, or direct profile page) and see if Message appears there.
You Get an Error or It Fails to Send
- Refresh/restart Discord and try again.
- Check your internet connection—file-send and DM send operations fail more often on unstable connections.
- On desktop, sign out and back in to refresh session tokens.
They Don’t Appear in Search
Some users restrict discovery. If you can’t locate them via search, the fastest workaround is to DM them through a shared server profile view or request them to message you first.
They Changed Settings or Blocked You
If you previously messaged them and now the option disappears, their settings may have changed, or they may have blocked your account. There’s no public confirmation banner you can rely on.
Try contacting from another account only if you genuinely control it (don’t create false identities to bypass blocking).
You’re Signed Out of the Correct Account
It’s easy to have multiple Discord accounts. Confirm the avatar in the bottom-left (desktop) or account profile (mobile) is the account you expect before you troubleshoot messaging.

Pinning and Re-finding a DM
Depending on your client version, you can pin important messages in a DM. If pinning isn’t available in your UI, you can still search inside the DM thread via the chat history search (where supported).
For quick recall, use the DM list on the left/bottom and avoid burying messages under many new chats.
Replying and Quoting
Most Discord clients support replying to a specific message inside a DM. Tap/click the message, then choose reply. It keeps context clear when conversations get long.
Attaching Files and Sending Images
In DMs, you can attach files and send images using the paperclip/upload control. Large files can take longer and may fail on poor networks.

Using Mentions in DMs
You can typically mention the other user in a DM using @ followed by their name, as long as the client supports it. This helps them spot your message if notifications are configured.
If mentions don’t work, check your input method and whether your client is loading the latest message UI.
