To show the title of the song, video, or segment currently playing, add changing text as an overlay in the video sent to YouTube. Editing the live broadcast’s title changes the name of the overall YouTube live event; it does not put each segment’s title on screen.
First decide which title viewers need to see
YouTube treats the live broadcast and the audio-video stream that feeds it as distinct things. A broadcast represents one YouTube video, and its title is broadcast-level metadata. Google’s LiveBroadcasts documentation states: “The broadcast represents exactly one YouTube video.” The API’s broadcast lifecycle guide describes updating broadcast metadata while a broadcast is active.

| Approach | What changes | Where viewers see it | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edit broadcast metadata | The title associated with the live YouTube video | YouTube title and metadata surfaces | You need to rename or correct the overall live event |
| Add a title overlay | Text composited into the outgoing video | Inside the stream picture | You want viewers to see the current song, clip, or segment |
Changing the broadcast title and showing a changing title in the picture are separate tasks. Choose the first for the event name and the second for now-playing information.
Change the overall YouTube live title
For a broadcast-level correction, update the title in the applicable YouTube Studio live-control workflow, or update the broadcast metadata through the YouTube Live Streaming API. The API documentation confirms that broadcast metadata can be updated while the broadcast is active. This updates the live video’s metadata; it does not render the current played video’s name over the image.

YouTube’s API also distinguishes the broadcast viewers watch from the stream carrying the audio-video feed. That distinction is why changing the broadcast’s metadata alone cannot serve as a per-song or per-segment visual overlay.
Show the current song or segment in the stream picture
To put changing text in the video itself, create or use a title source and place it as an overlay layer in the software producing the stream. OBS supports browser sources, and an OBS Project forum resource by Omegadev documents a community “now playing” overlay that can use YouTube chapters or video-description playlists as title inputs. The resource’s stated last update is September 18, 2025; it is a community tool, not an official YouTube feature. Check the resource’s current compatibility and setup instructions before relying on it.

- Choose the title input. Decide whether your content is organized with YouTube chapters, a playlist described in the video description, or another input supported by the overlay you select.
- Add the overlay to the video-producing setup. In OBS, add the title display as a browser source and position it as a layer in the scene that is sent to the live stream. Follow the overlay maintainer’s current installation and configuration instructions.
- Test against the real playback. Run the content and confirm the displayed title changes at the correct moments. Check that the text is readable, fits the scene, and does not cover important content.
- Correct the input if it is out of sync. Verify that chapter times or playlist entries match the actual playback order and timing. The documented approach does not establish universal compatibility or synchronization for every continuous-stream setup.
A browser-source overlay is one documented OBS approach, not the only possible implementation. Confirm its behavior with your actual content format rather than assuming any title source will work with every player or stream workflow.

A title overlay only identifies what is playing; it does not grant permission to broadcast the audio or video. YouTube Help explains that live streams may be terminated for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes and that archived live streams can receive Content ID claims. Check your rights to the underlying material separately from the overlay setup. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
