Display fossils on stable, fitted supports, keep them out of direct sun and away from heat and busy edges, and reduce dust and unnecessary handling with a closed cabinet where practical. For a mixed collection, the National Park Service (NPS) recommends stable conditions of 59–77°F and 45–55% relative humidity, but those ranges are not a universal prescription: fossils with retained organic material and specimens with damage or unstable repairs may need individual advice.
What conditions should a fossil collection be kept in?
The NPS Museum Handbook recommends stable temperatures of 59–77°F and relative humidity of 45–55% for a mixed paleontological collection. Treat these as general collection guidance, not a requirement that every fossil be kept at an exact number. Stability matters: monitor for substantial swings rather than making abrupt changes to chase a target.

Material and condition can change what is appropriate. The NPS notes that some fossils retaining original organic constituents—particularly some Pleistocene specimens—may be sensitive to high humidity. Its appendix calls for 45–55% relative humidity for such material and eliminating UV sources. No single humidity target is established for every fossil type or condition.
Should fossils be exposed to light?
The NPS says, “There is no evidence that light levels (UV or visible) adversely affect fossils. However, they do affect glues and preservatives used to preserve specimens.” It advises keeping light as low as possible. The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) also identifies light exposure as a concern for adhesives and collection housing materials, and describes light damage as cumulative and irreversible.

For a home display, avoid direct sunlight and UV sources, use low ambient light, and keep specimens away from spotlights that add heat. These precautions protect preparation materials and avoid unnecessary exposure; they do not imply that visible light has been shown to damage every fossil itself.
How should a fossil be supported and displayed?
Fossils can be fragile even when they look like solid rock. The NPS warns that many specimens cannot support their own weight. A secure display should prevent rolling, sliding, tipping, vibration and abrasion while distributing weight rather than pressing on delicate projections or repaired areas.

Open shelf or closed cabinet?
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Closed cabinet or dust cover | You want to reduce dust, light, pests, theft and casual handling. | A cabinet is a practical barrier, not a guarantee of climate control; do not assume a glass-front case stabilizes temperature or humidity. |
| Open shelf | The location is secure and specimens can be placed away from edges and frequent contact. | It offers less protection from dust and accidental handling, so placement and support matter especially. |
Generic padding or a fitted mount?
A suitable pad may work for a stable, simple specimen, while an irregular, heavy, repaired or fragile fossil may need a fitted cradle or retainer. AMNH explains that mount design can address gravity, vibration, abrasion, movement in drawers and handling. It recommends inert, preservation-grade materials that are not reactive or prone to off-gassing. A material described as foam or archival is not automatically appropriate; confirm its composition and preservation use.

A support that is safe while stationary must also remain secure during storage and movement.

How to move and place fossils safely
- Prepare the destination. Choose a stable surface away from high-traffic edges, sunlight, heating vents and strong spotlights. Clear a path before lifting.
- Inspect before moving. Note loose, cracked, flaky or repaired areas. If the specimen is deteriorating or its condition makes handling uncertain, do not proceed without specialist advice.
- Support from below. Use clean, dry hands and both hands where needed. For a heavy or awkward specimen, move it in a box or on a tray if that provides safer support.
- Set it into a stable support. Use a fitted cradle or retainer that prevents rolling or tipping without concentrating pressure on fragile parts. Do not drag a heavy fossil across a shelf.
- Keep its identification with it. Retain the label and position it so the support or enclosure does not hide the information.
The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends padded shelves and work tables, safe handling, and display mounts or retainers that reduce damage from shock and vibration. For shelf or work-surface padding, use appropriate inert foam rather than an unknown material.
How can dust and handling be reduced?
Dust can abrade surfaces, and repeated handling raises the chance of a drop or other damage. Use a closed cabinet or dust cover where practical, keep the surrounding air clean, and avoid frequent rearranging. Choose a display location that does not invite people to pick specimens up.

The NPS cautions that cleaning fossils—even gently—can cause damage. Do not make routine dusting or washing part of fossil care, and do not use household cleaners.

When should a fossil get professional care?
General preventive-care guidance cannot establish treatment needs for an individual specimen. Contact a fossil preparator or conservator before attempting repair or cleaning if a fossil is powdery, flaking, cracked, changing, or has loose pieces or unstable repairs. Seek an individual assessment for specimens with retained organic material or high monetary or scientific importance, and for any fossil whose weight or shape makes a safe mount uncertain.
