YouTube has separate controls for different kinds of automatic playback. If a related video starts after the current one, turn off the Autoplay switch in the video player. If videos preview silently while you scroll Home or search, turn off Playback in feeds in the mobile app. TV, console and casting sessions have their own controls.
First, identify the autoplay behavior
Ask: Does another video start after the current video ends, or does a preview start while I browse?
| What happens | Control to change |
|---|---|
| A related video starts when the current video ends | Autoplay in the video player |
| Videos play silently while scrolling Home or search | Playback in feeds |
| Playback continues on a television or console | That device’s YouTube Settings → Autoplay |
| Playback continues after casting | Autoplay in the casting queue |
| You only want to stop the next video once | Cancel on the end-of-video prompt |
YouTube documents these as separate features, so switching off one does not necessarily switch off the others. Preferences can also differ between a computer, phone, tablet, TV and other devices. See YouTube’s Autoplay help page.
Turn off next-video autoplay on a computer
- Open YouTube and start any video.
- Move the pointer over the player to display its controls.
- Find the Autoplay switch along the bottom of the player.
- Click the switch so it shows the off state.
- Let the video finish, or reload the page and test it. No related video should start automatically.
This changes YouTube’s preference for that computer and browsing context; it is not a universal browser setting. A separate phone or TV may still have autoplay enabled.

Details are in YouTube’s inline-player documentation.

Stop only the next video
If autoplay is normally useful, leave the setting on and tap or click Cancel when YouTube shows the upcoming video at the end of the current one. Scrolling away from the player, entering a comment or starting a search can also prevent the queued video from starting in some situations.

A video starts when the app opens
YouTube describes Playback in feeds as inline playback while browsing Home and search. It does not promise that every app-launch event, Shorts behavior or interface experiment is controlled by that setting. Try this sequence:

- Update YouTube from the device’s official app store.
- Test another account or an incognito session to see whether the behavior is account-specific.
- Open YouTube in a mobile browser for comparison.
- Report the behavior through YouTube’s in-app feedback if it continues.
User reports in the YouTube Help Community describe similar cases, but they do not establish a universal bug or a supported setting for every form of automatic playback.
The switch is missing
- The app layout or labels may have changed.
- You may be using a supervised account or parental controls may limit the option.
- You may be in a TV app, console app, browser or mobile website rather than the mobile app.
- The setting may have moved under playback or video preferences.
- YouTube may be showing a device-specific or staged interface.
Search YouTube settings for Autoplay or Playback in feeds, and verify which app and account are active.
The switch turns itself back on
Check that you changed the setting on the same device where the problem occurs and that the intended Google/YouTube account is signed in. An unsaved refresh, interface change or temporary account synchronization problem can also make the preference appear inconsistent.

Limits and account-specific details
- On mobile networks, YouTube says continued autoplay stops after 30 minutes of inactivity; on Wi-Fi, it stops after four hours. These limits do not disable autoplay.
- YouTube says autoplay is off by default for users aged 13–17. Supervised accounts can have controls restricted by parental settings.
- Muting a preview only removes sound; it does not stop video playback. Use Playback in feeds → Off to stop the preview.
- YouTube Premium does not provide a separate universal autoplay switch; the standard controls above still apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to disable autoplay separately on every device?
Usually, yes. YouTube states that autoplay preferences can differ between devices, so check each computer, mobile app, TV or console where you watch.
Can I stop autoplay only on mobile data?
For feed previews, choose Playback in feeds → Wi-Fi only. That preserves previews on Wi-Fi but does not turn them off completely.
Does turning off autoplay stop YouTube Shorts?
Not necessarily. The documented Autoplay switch controls the next related video, while Shorts and app-open behavior may follow different interface rules.
Can I disable autoplay in a mobile browser?
Use the Autoplay control shown in the browser’s YouTube video player. The exact layout can differ from the YouTube mobile app, so look for the player switch rather than the app’s Playback in feeds menu.
