The rules are world-wide, require permission to run commands, and have different side effects: mob_griefing also affects other mobs such as endermen and villagers, while it does not prevent mobs from attacking players.

Commands at a glance
Choose the row for your edition and version. Enter the command in chat with the leading slash, or remove the slash when entering it in a server console.
| Server | Stop creeper and other mob block damage | Stop TNT explosions |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition 1.21.11 or newer | /gamerule mob_griefing false |
/gamerule tnt_explodes false |
| Java Edition 1.21.10 or older | /gamerule mobGriefing false |
/gamerule tntExplodes false (only on versions that provide this rule) |
| Bedrock Edition | /gamerule mobgriefing false |
/gamerule tntexplodes false |
The TNT rule was added to Java in version 1.21.5 (snapshot 25w10a). A Java world on an older release may not recognize a TNT gamerule at all; in that case, the command cannot be enabled without moving to a version that includes it.

Why the edition and version matter
Minecraft has nearly identical-looking gamerules with different spellings. Java changed its gamerule identifiers to snake_case in 1.21.11, while older Java releases used camelCase. Bedrock uses lowercase names without an underscore. A correctly typed command for the wrong edition can be rejected as an unknown rule or appear to have no effect.
Java Edition 1.21.11 and later
Use mob_griefing and tnt_explodes. These are the current Java identifiers in this version line. The 1.21.11 change also moved gamerules into a registry, which is why current documentation and older guides may show different names.
Java Edition 1.21.10 and earlier
Use mobGriefing for mob block interaction. The TNT rule is written tntExplodes where that release supports it. Documentation for older builds is inconsistent about whether a camel-case name remains accepted after an upgrade, so rely on the exact identifier offered by your running server’s command completion rather than assuming both spellings work.
Bedrock Edition
Use mobgriefing and tntexplodes. Do not add an underscore. Java gamerule names will not work as Bedrock names.

Disable both protections in game
These steps apply when you can join the world as an operator or another player with permission to use commands.
- Confirm the server edition and exact version from the server’s startup information or the game’s version display. Do this before choosing a command.
- Join the affected world and open the chat or command interface.
- Run the mob rule for your platform:
/gamerule mob_griefing falseon Java 1.21.11 or newer;/gamerule mobGriefing falseon Java 1.21.10 or older;/gamerule mobgriefing falseon Bedrock. - Run the TNT rule for your platform:
/gamerule tnt_explodes falseon Java 1.21.11 or newer;/gamerule tntExplodes falseon an older Java release that includes the rule;/gamerule tntexplodes falseon Bedrock. - Test in a disposable area. Trigger a creeper and, separately, ignite TNT. The test should leave blocks intact when the corresponding rule is false.
To turn either feature back on, run the same command with true instead of false. For example, /gamerule tnt_explodes true restores TNT explosions on current Java.

Run the commands from a server console
Console syntax normally omits the slash. For current Java, enter:
gamerule mob_griefing falsegamerule tnt_explodes false
Use the matching camel-case Java names or lowercase Bedrock names from the table when your server is on another version or edition. A console command changes the world currently loaded by that server process; if your server hosts several worlds, check each world that needs protection.

Permission and cheats requirements
Gamerules are commands, not ordinary gameplay settings. In Java, you need sufficient operator permission; in Bedrock, cheats or equivalent command access must be enabled. A server with commands or cheats disabled will not accept these changes. On a hosted server, an operator may still be unable to run slash commands when cheats are off, so enabling the appropriate command permission is the first troubleshooting step.
If you receive a permission error
- Make sure you are operating the correct server account, not merely an in-game account with a similarly named profile.
- Ask the server owner to grant the required operator or command permission, or have the owner execute the command from the console.
- Do not paste a console command, which has no slash, into in-game chat and assume it failed for the same reason; use the syntax appropriate to the interface.
Check whether a rule is already enabled or disabled
Query the rule without supplying a value to display its current state. For example, on current Java use /gamerule mob_griefing and /gamerule tnt_explodes. Substitute mobGriefing, tntExplodes, mobgriefing, or tntexplodes for older Java or Bedrock as appropriate.
A returned value of false means that rule is disabled in the world you queried. If the query itself reports an unknown rule, stop changing values and verify the edition, exact version, spelling, and whether the release contains the TNT rule.
What each gamerule actually changes
mob_griefing, mobGriefing, or mobgriefing
This is the broad mob-interaction switch. Setting it to false prevents creepers from destroying blocks. It also affects other listed mob behaviors that change blocks or pick up items, including endermen and villagers. Therefore it is not a creeper-only setting: farms, item collection, block-moving behavior, and other mechanics that depend on mob interaction may change as well.

The rule does not make hostile mobs harmless. Mobs can still damage players when their normal attack conditions are met. If your goal is to stop deaths rather than block destruction, this gamerule addresses the wrong problem.
tnt_explodes, tntExplodes, or tntexplodes
This is the dedicated TNT explosion switch. Setting it to false prevents TNT from producing its explosion and therefore protects blocks from TNT detonation. It is independent of mob_griefing: turning off mob griefing does not replace the TNT rule, and turning off TNT does not stop creepers.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Global scope: what these commands cannot do
A gamerule applies to the world, not to one player, claim, building, or coordinate range. Setting it to false protects every loaded and future area in that world from the relevant behavior. It cannot create a safe spawn town while leaving a separate arena or mining area unchanged.
Best Value
If you need different rules in different regions, a global gamerule is not sufficient. That requires a region-protection system or server software feature that supports per-region explosion controls. Such controls are separate from the vanilla gamerules and must be checked against the exact server software and plugin version you run.
Troubleshooting: when explosions still happen
The command says the rule is unknown
- Check whether you used Java, Bedrock, or a cross-play server with a particular backend.
- Check the version boundary. Java 1.21.11 and later use underscores; Java 1.21.10 and earlier use camelCase; Bedrock uses lowercase without underscores.
- Confirm that your Java release includes the TNT gamerule. It was introduced in 1.21.5, so an older server cannot use it.
- Use command completion or a no-value gamerule query to see the names recognized by that running server.
Creepers still damage blocks
- Query the correctly spelled mob-griefing rule in the same world where the incident occurred.
- Make sure the returned value is
false, not merely that the command was sent without an error. - Check that the damage was caused by a creeper rather than TNT, a player, or another explosion source. The mob rule does not replace the TNT rule.
- Remember that the rule prevents block destruction, not mob attacks. A creeper can still approach and threaten players even when terrain damage is disabled.
TNT still explodes
- Query the TNT rule with the identifier for your edition and version.
- Confirm that it returns
falsein the world where the TNT was placed. - Check whether the server is actually running the version you assumed; an older Java build may reject the newer snake_case name.
- Distinguish TNT from a creeper explosion. Disabling TNT does not affect creepers, and disabling mob griefing does not affect TNT.
The setting reverted after changing worlds
Gamerules are world settings. A multi-world server can have different values in different worlds, so query the rule after entering the specific world that needs protection. If a server-management tool or plugin changes gamerules at startup, its configuration may overwrite a manual change; check that system’s documented settings.
Version-change checklist
When upgrading a Java server across the 1.21.10-to-1.21.11 boundary, verify the rules instead of assuming an old command still works.
- Record the current values with the gamerule query command before upgrading.
- After the upgrade, query
mob_griefingandtnt_explodesin each protected world. - If a rule is missing, use the exact name shown by command completion and check whether the server finished loading the intended version.
- Run a controlled creeper and TNT test before allowing normal players back into valuable areas.
Operational checklist for a protected server
- Identify the edition: Java or Bedrock.
- Identify the exact version, especially whether Java is 1.21.11 or newer.
- Confirm command or cheat permission before testing.
- Apply the mob rule and TNT rule separately; they control different causes.
- Query each rule after setting it.
- Test both a creeper and TNT in an expendable area.
- Document that mob griefing also changes endermen, villagers, and other mob interactions.
- Tell builders that the protection is world-wide, not region-specific.
- Recheck values after server upgrades, world changes, or automated startup tools.
Practical examples
Current Java survival server: stop both types of damage
Run:
/gamerule mob_griefing false
/gamerule tnt_explodes false
Then verify with:
/gamerule mob_griefing
/gamerule tnt_explodes
Older Java server: stop creeper damage only
Run:
/gamerule mobGriefing false
Leave the TNT rule unchanged if TNT is still intended to work. If you also need to disable TNT, use tntExplodes only if that server version recognizes it.
Bedrock world: disable both
Run:
/gamerule mobgriefing false
/gamerule tntexplodes false
Do not substitute Java’s underscores in these Bedrock commands.
