Set game.gameProperties.disableThirdPerson to the Boolean value true in your Arma Reforger server configuration. The official server reference defines the property with a default of false; changing it to true forces connected clients to use first-person view.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Arma Reforger servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
After saving, apply the change by restarting or reloading the server through your host’s normal controls. If you use Arma Reforger’s built-in hosting screen instead of editing JSON, turn off the Third-person camera option in the server settings before launching or restarting the session.

Choose the method that matches how you host
There are two supported ways to enforce first-person view. Direct JSON editing gives you the exact server property and is the normal approach for a dedicated server. The in-game hosting interface exposes the same policy as a user-facing checkbox or toggle. Both methods are server-side: players do not need a mod, a client-file edit, or any physical accessory.
| Route | Where you change it | What to do after changing it | Access you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Configuration file | game.gameProperties.disableThirdPerson in the server JSON |
Save, then stop/start or reload the server using the host’s controls | Permission to edit the server configuration and control its process |
| Built-in hosting interface | Third-person camera in the server setup/settings screen | Apply the settings, then launch or restart the session | Owner or host access to the setup screen |
Use the file route when your provider gives you a persistent configuration file or panel editor. Use the interface route when you are creating a session through the game’s own host-your-own-game workflow. A managed provider may regenerate its JSON when you change a preset, update a profile, or restart; check that provider’s configuration-path and persistence instructions if the value does not survive a restart.

Method 1: Set disableThirdPerson in the server JSON
1. Stop the server or use the provider’s safe edit workflow
Before editing, stop the dedicated server if your host requires files to be changed while the process is offline. Some control panels offer an edit-and-restart action instead. Do not overwrite the complete configuration with a short sample: retain every existing field and change only the camera property.
2. Open the active configuration file
Open the JSON file that your host identifies as the active Arma Reforger server configuration. File names and paths differ between self-hosted installations and managed panels, so follow the path shown by your provider or installation documentation. If the panel has separate profiles, verify that you are editing the profile used by the server instance you intend to change.

The key belongs inside game.gameProperties. A minimal example looks like this:
{
"game": {
"gameProperties": {
"disableThirdPerson": true
}
}
}
In a real configuration, gameProperties will normally contain additional gameplay settings. Keep those settings and insert the new member alongside them. JSON names are case-sensitive, so use the exact spelling disableThirdPerson, with a capital T and capital P.
4. Use a JSON Boolean, not text
Write true without quotation marks. The following is a Boolean and enables enforcement:

"disableThirdPerson": true
This is a string and is not the documented Boolean value:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors"disableThirdPerson": "true"
Likewise, "True", 1, or a misspelled key should not be substituted. If the property is present already, replace its value rather than creating a second copy of the same key.
5. Save valid JSON
Preserve commas between neighboring members, matching braces, and straight quotation marks. If your panel includes a JSON validator, run it before applying the file. A syntax error can prevent the server from loading the configuration, whereas a correctly formed file with the wrong key will simply leave the camera policy unchanged.
6. Start or reload the server
Use the normal stop/start, restart, or reload control supplied by your host. The exact button and whether a full process restart is required depend on the hosting method. Treat the setting as active only after the host reports that the new configuration has been loaded.
The complete property and its documented behavior are listed in Bohemia Interactive Community’s Arma Reforger server configuration reference.

Method 2: Turn off Third-person camera in the hosting interface
Open the server setup screen
When you host through the game’s own interface, open the server setup or server settings screen before launching the session. Bohemia Interactive’s host-your-own-game guide identifies Third-person camera as a server setting.
Disable the camera option
Turn Third-person camera off. The label describes permission for third-person play, so an off setting corresponds to the JSON policy that disables third person. Apply the settings and launch the server, or restart the running session if the interface exposes settings for an existing server.
Confirm that the setting was applied
Join with a client account after the session is running and attempt the normal view-switch command. With the policy active, the client should remain in first-person view rather than switching to an external camera. If the switch still works, leave the session, confirm that the setting was applied to the active server profile, and restart or reload it again.
What the setting actually does
The server property controls whether clients may use third-person view. Its documented states are:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →falseis the default and allows third-person view.trueforces clients to use first-person view.
This is an authority-side rule. A player cannot enable third person by changing a local preference when the server is enforcing first person. No client mod, edited game file, controller accessory, or other physical product is required.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The official reference describes the enabled behavior as: “Force clients to use the first-person view.” That wording matters: the server is not merely selecting a preferred camera at join time; it is imposing the view restriction on connected clients.
How to verify the restriction on a live server
- Connect a test player after the server has been restarted or the settings have been applied.
- Enter a situation where the game normally permits a view change.
- Use the usual camera-toggle input once. The view should stay in first person.
- If you have administrative access, inspect the active configuration or hosting screen and confirm that the value is still enabled.
- Disconnect and reconnect the test player. The restriction should remain in force for the new connection.
Testing with a joining player is preferable to checking only the saved file. A panel can save one profile while the running process uses another, and some hosts regenerate configuration files during startup.
Troubleshooting when third person is still available
The key is in the wrong location
Confirm that disableThirdPerson is nested under game → gameProperties. A correctly spelled key placed in a different object will not control this property. Compare the nesting and capitalization with the official example in the server reference.
The value is a string
Remove quotation marks around true. JSON distinguishes the Boolean true from the text value "true". Save the file again, validate it, and restart the server.
The server was not restarted or reloaded
Editing a file does not necessarily change a running process. Use the host’s restart or reload control, then reconnect a test player. If the host documents a full stop/start for configuration changes, follow that procedure instead of relying on a soft reload.

You edited a template or inactive profile
Many panels expose templates, backup files, and multiple server profiles. Check the panel’s instance name and active configuration path. Make the change in the file that the running server actually reads, not only in a template that will be copied later.
The provider regenerated the file
If the value disappears after a restart, look for a gameplay-settings form, startup environment variable, or provider-specific persistence rule. Reapply the setting through the provider’s supported interface and check the generated JSON afterward. Avoid repeatedly editing a generated file if the panel will overwrite it on every launch.
The interface toggle and file disagree
Use one route at a time while diagnosing. Turn off Third-person camera in the hosting screen, apply it, and then inspect the resulting configuration if the interface allows that. Alternatively, set the JSON property and restart from the panel without changing the toggle. A later profile save can replace an earlier manual edit.
Dedicated server and self-hosting considerations
For a dedicated server, the practical sequence is stop, edit, save, start, and test. The exact file location and restart control are host-specific; neither is standardized by the property itself. Keep a backup of the working configuration before editing so you can restore it if a syntax error or unrelated change prevents startup.
For a self-hosted server reachable over the internet, camera enforcement is independent of network reachability. The official hosting guide lists public port 2001 as the default for making a self-hosted server reachable, but forwarding that port does not disable third person. Port forwarding solves connectivity; disableThirdPerson solves the camera policy. Configure them separately.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using
"true"instead of the Booleantrue. - Typing
disablethirdperson,disableThirdPersonView, or another variant instead of the exact key. - Putting the key outside
game.gameProperties. - Deleting unrelated configuration fields while pasting the short example.
- Changing a file while the server is running and never reloading it.
- Testing in an old session that started before the change.
- Assuming router configuration, a client-side option, or a mod can replace the server setting.
- Editing a panel template when the active instance is generated from a different profile.
Configuration reference and further reading
Use the following references for the authoritative property name, interface terminology, and hosting context:
- Arma Reforger server configuration reference — defines
disableThirdPerson, its Boolean type, default value, and first-person enforcement behavior. - Bohemia Interactive’s host-your-own-game guide — shows the hosting workflow and the Third-person camera setting, along with the default public port information.

The decisive change remains the same regardless of which documentation or hosting panel you consult: set game.gameProperties.disableThirdPerson to the Boolean true, apply it to the active server, and verify with a newly connected player.
