To stop a dedicated Copilot key from opening Copilot, change its action in Windows 11’s keyboard settings; to change Windows+C, configure that shortcut separately. These controls are distinct, and their availability and choices vary by PC, Windows build, account, and installed apps.
Change what the physical Copilot key does
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard.
- Select Customize Copilot key on keyboard.
- Choose a non-Copilot action if one is available, such as Search or another listed option. The menu can include choices such as Search, Microsoft Copilot, Custom, and Copilot, but the available actions and default vary by device. Microsoft describes this setting in its Copilot key accessibility guidance.
A non-Copilot choice changes the dedicated key’s assignment; it does not by itself establish that every Copilot launch route, including Windows+C, is disabled.

Change the Windows+C shortcut separately
To customize the shortcut, open Settings > Personalization > Text input > Customize Copilot key on keyboard, then choose an available action. This setting controls what Windows+C does; it is separate from the dedicated-key setting. Microsoft says the shortcut can open Copilot or Microsoft 365 Copilot, and when Copilot is unavailable or disabled it may instead open or close Windows Search—not necessarily do nothing. On some keyboards, the Copilot key occupies the former Right Ctrl or Context Menu position. If the Windows setting or the PC maker’s utility offers remapping, assign the key to the function you want rather than suppressing it. Hardware implementations and options differ by manufacturer; Microsoft explains this variation in its Copilot key device guidance.

Note the side effect before mapping it to Right Ctrl: Microsoft warns that combinations involving Right Ctrl+Windows and Right Ctrl+Shift may not work as usual. Use Left Ctrl for those combinations if needed.
If the setting is missing or does not take effect
- Check the PC or keyboard manufacturer’s documentation and keyboard utility for a device-specific remapping option.
- Check the taskbar’s Copilot settings: Microsoft notes that taskbar settings can override the keyboard selection.
- Confirm which account and application configuration is in use; availability can depend on both.
- Avoid treating registry edits or third-party scripts as a universal, Microsoft-documented fix. The documented options and behavior vary by device.
Hiding the taskbar icon is a separate change
Changing whether Copilot appears on the taskbar affects its visibility there. It does not show that the physical key or Windows+C has been disabled; configure each trigger independently if you want to change its behavior.
