Set the server option name_tags to false, then restart the server. You can do this through your hosting control panel or by editing server_config.sii. In a Docker-based convoy server, set ETS_SERVER_NAME_TAGS=false. You must control the server (or have its administrator make the change); a connected player cannot disable tags on someone else’s server.

What the name_tags setting controls
Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2) and American Truck Simulator (ATS) dedicated servers expose a Boolean option named name_tags. A value of true enables player name tags; changing it to false disables them for that server. The option is server-side, so changing a local game setting will not alter a multiplayer server’s behavior.

The change applies after the server loads the updated configuration. Stop the server before changing a file, save the setting, and start the server again. If you only change a panel field or file while the process is running, the active instance can continue using its previous value until it is restarted.

The panel route is usually the least error-prone because it avoids editing syntax by hand. The file route is useful when your host does not expose the option or when you administer the server directly. Docker deployments use the environment variable documented by the image rather than editing a generated file inside a running container.

Disable name tags in a hosting control panel
Control panels use different menu names, but the setting is still normally labelled Name Tags. The panel must write the value to the server configuration and the server must be restarted before players see the change.
Generic panel procedure
- Stop the server. Use the panel’s Stop, Shutdown, or Halt control and wait until the status shows that the process has ended.
- Open the server configuration area. Depending on the host, this may be called Config Files, Server Settings, Basic Settings, or Startup.
- Find Name Tags. Look for a switch, drop-down, or text field whose underlying option is
name_tags. - Set it to disabled. Choose Disabled or
false, not Enabled ortrue. - Save or apply the change. Wait for the panel to confirm that the setting was written.
- Start the server again. Use Start or Restart only after the save has completed.
- Reconnect and check. Join the server with a client account and confirm that the name labels no longer appear. If the old labels remain, leave the session and reconnect after verifying that the server actually restarted.
Shockbyte-style configuration-file panel
A Shockbyte guide describes stopping the server, opening its configuration-files section, selecting the Truck Simulator server-settings file, changing the Name Tags drop-down to Disabled, saving, and restarting. That guide was written for an older version of the provider’s control panel, so the menu names or location may have changed. If you do not see the same labels, use the panel’s current server-settings or configuration-file area and look specifically for name_tags.

G-Portal-style Basic Settings panel
G-Portal’s wiki places the control under Basic Settings and describes a Name Tags slider. Turn that slider off, save the configuration, and restart the server. A slider that appears off in the interface should correspond to a false value in the saved configuration; if the setting returns to on after a restart, inspect the generated configuration or contact the host.

Sparked Host-style Startup panel
Sparked Host documents the option in the Startup tab. Its Name Tags field defaults to true; change it to false, save, and restart. A startup variable may be presented as a text value rather than a visual switch, so enter the word false in lowercase if the panel accepts text.
Edit server_config.sii directly
Use this method when you have file access to a self-managed server or when your host exposes the configuration file but not a dedicated toggle. Make a backup before editing so you can restore the previous configuration if another change is accidentally altered.
Safe edit procedure
- Stop the server process. Do not edit the live file while the server is running. Wait until the panel, service manager, or terminal confirms shutdown.
- Locate the active configuration file. The file is named
server_config.sii. Hosting layouts differ. One guide returned a path written aslocal > share > Euro Truck Simulator 2 > server_config.sii; that path is lower-confidence and may not match your host. Use the file that your server launch configuration actually loads, and do not assume an ETS2 directory name is correct for every ATS installation. - Create a backup copy. Copy the file to a separate name or download it before making the edit. Keep the backup until you have verified the server starts normally.
- Open the file as plain text. Use an editor that does not add rich-text formatting or change punctuation.
- Find the setting. Search for
name_tags. The relevant line should use the Boolean formname_tags: trueorname_tags: false. - Change only the value. Replace
truewithfalse, leaving the option name, colon, and surrounding syntax intact. The intended line is:
name_tags: false- Save the file. Confirm that the file keeps its original name and extension, rather than becoming
server_config.sii.txt. - Start or restart the server. The stopped process must load the edited file on startup.
- Verify the result. Join the server and check that name tags are disabled. If the server fails to start, stop it, restore the backup, and compare the edited line for spelling, punctuation, and a valid Boolean value.
What not to change
- Do not rename
name_tagsor replace the Boolean with quoted text such as"false". - Do not edit a sample, backup, or template file if the running server loads a different configuration.
- Do not leave two conflicting
name_tagsentries and assume the last one will always win; keep one authoritative setting in the file the server uses. - Do not overwrite unrelated options while copying a line from another server. Configurations can contain server-specific values that should remain unchanged.
Docker and convoy-server deployments
The LsHallo ets2-dedicated-convoy-server README lists an environment variable named ETS_SERVER_NAME_TAGS. For a Docker-based setup, set that variable to false:

ETS_SERVER_NAME_TAGS=falseApply the variable where your deployment defines container environment values, then recreate or restart the container according to your normal Docker workflow. Editing a generated server_config.sii inside a running container may be temporary: the file can be regenerated when the container is replaced. The environment variable is therefore the portable setting for this documented image.
ETS2 and ATS: what is the same and what can differ
The option name and Boolean value are the same for an ETS2 or ATS dedicated server: name_tags set to false. The difference is usually the host’s directory layout, panel template, or launch profile, not the setting itself. A panel may call the file “Truck Simulator server settings” without spelling out which game is selected.
When you operate more than one server instance, change the configuration belonging to the intended instance. An ETS2 server and an ATS server can have separate configuration files, and a panel account can expose several profiles. Check the instance name, game selection, or service identifier before saving.

How to confirm that the change took effect
- Check the panel or service log for a clean shutdown before the edit and a successful startup afterward.
- Reopen the panel setting or
server_config.siiand confirm the persisted value is disabled orfalse. - Connect to the same server instance, not a different profile or a local single-player session.
- Use a fresh connection after the restart. If you stayed connected while the server was restarted, disconnect and join again so the client receives the new server state.
If the setting is visibly false and the correct instance was restarted but tags still appear, the panel may be rewriting the file from another template. In that case, use the host’s current documentation or support channel and identify the exact instance and configuration file you changed.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Name Tags control is missing
Panel layouts change over time, and older hosting guides may show labels that no longer exist. Search the panel’s configuration and startup sections for “Name Tags” or name_tags. If no control is exposed, use the file-edit route if your plan provides file access. A guide that documents an older interface should not be treated as evidence that your current panel has the same menu path.
The value changes back to true
First stop the server and save again; a running instance may overwrite a file on shutdown. If it still reverts, check whether the host generates server_config.sii from startup variables or a template. Set the value in the panel field that owns the generated configuration, or use the documented Docker environment variable for a container deployment.
The server will not start after the edit
Restore the backup and start the server to separate a syntax problem from the name-tag setting. Then edit only the Boolean value, preserving the exact name_tags: false format. Confirm that the filename and extension did not change and that no rich-text formatting was introduced.
Players still see labels after a restart
Confirm that the process really restarted, that the value is saved as false, and that players joined the same server instance afterward. If those checks pass, the visible labels may be coming from a different server profile or from a host template that reapplies the old value. Ask the server host to verify which configuration file the active instance loads.
You are not the server owner
There is no client-side command that can change another owner’s server configuration. Ask the administrator to apply the panel or file change. On a public server, the owner’s policy determines whether name tags remain enabled.

Re-enable name tags
To reverse the change, set the panel control to Enabled or change the file line to name_tags: true. In Docker, set ETS_SERVER_NAME_TAGS=true. Save the configuration and restart the server so the new value is loaded.

- The server is stopped before a file edit.

Source and currency note
Hosting instructions for this option are not uniform. The Shockbyte material explicitly refers to an older control panel, while G-Portal and Sparked Host describe different current-style locations. Menu labels can therefore differ from the examples above, and no 2026-dated panel-label reference was confirmed. The underlying configuration value remains the practical point to verify: name_tags: false.
