How to Disable Microsoft Edge in Windows 11: A Step-by-Step Guide

“Disable Edge” can mean changing your default browser, stopping sign-in restoration or Startup boost, removing a website app, or uninstalling Edge where Windows offers that option.

“Disable Edge” can mean several different things in Windows 11. If you want links to open in another browser, change the default apps; if you want Edge to stop returning after sign-in, change Windows’ restartable-app setting; if you mean removing Edge itself, first check whether your Windows installation offers an uninstall option. Choose the least disruptive step that matches your goal.

Choose the change you actually want

Goal What to change Scope
Open links and files in another browser Set that browser as the default for the file and link types you use Default associations; Edge remains installed
Stop Windows restoring apps at sign-in Turn off the restartable-apps sign-in setting Windows sign-in behavior
Stop Edge startup boost Turn off Startup boost in Edge settings Edge background startup behavior
Remove one website app installed through Edge Uninstall that app from Edge’s apps page One web app, not the Edge browser
Remove Edge itself Check Installed apps for an Uninstall control Availability depends on the Windows installation; Edge-dependent experiences may be affected

Set another browser as the default

This is the right choice if you want a different browser to open web links. It does not disable or uninstall Edge. Install or open the browser you prefer, then use Windows settings to assign the file and link types you care about.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
  2. Select the browser you want to use.
  3. Review its available file and link types, then set the ones you want that browser to handle. Check the types individually rather than assuming that selecting a browser changes every association.

Microsoft’s instructions explain how to configure defaults by app or by file or link type: Change default apps in Windows. In its June 26, 2025 Windows 11 update notes, Microsoft also described additional registered file and link associations and optional taskbar and Start pinning when a new default is set for users in the European Economic Area (EEA). The notes describe a gradual rollout, so availability and behavior may differ between EEA devices. Read the update notes.

Stop Windows from reopening apps at sign-in

If Edge reappears after you sign in because Windows is restoring restartable apps, turn off the relevant Windows setting. This changes Windows’ restartable-app behavior; it does not uninstall Edge or establish that every possible reason Edge might launch has been addressed.

  1. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  2. Turn off Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign in.

Microsoft documents this setting as a way to stop Edge from starting automatically: Stop Microsoft Edge from starting automatically.

Turn off Edge Startup boost

Startup boost keeps Edge processes running in the background so the browser can launch faster. Turning it off changes this Edge-specific behavior, not your default browser or Edge’s installation.

Uninstall a website app installed through Edge

An app installed from a website through Edge is separate from the Edge browser. To remove just that web app:

  1. In Edge, open edge://apps.
  2. Find the app and select Details.
  3. Choose Uninstall, then confirm.

These steps remove the selected app, not Edge. Microsoft’s instructions are on its Edge apps management page.

Check whether your Windows 11 installation allows Edge removal

Uninstall availability is not established uniformly across Windows 11 versions, regions, and device configurations. Microsoft’s support article titled Why can’t I uninstall Microsoft Edge? is labeled for Windows 10, so it should not be treated as a universal statement about every Windows 11 PC.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Microsoft Edge and check whether an Uninstall control is offered for your installation.
  3. If the control is absent, do not assume a command-line workaround will work across Windows 11 configurations.

Understand what uninstalling Edge can affect

Microsoft describes Edge as a platform used by some Windows apps and widgets. It warns that uninstalling Edge can stop Edge-dependent experiences—including installed PWAs such as Copilot, sites installed as apps, and Edge-backed widgets—from working. That warning concerns those dependent experiences; it does not establish that all Windows functions will fail. See Microsoft’s list of apps and widgets that depend on Edge.
