How to Disable Integrated Graphics [Turn Off iGPU in Minutes]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disabling integrated graphics (iGPU) can improve performance consistency, reduce power draw, and prevent odd rendering conflicts—especially on desktops and workstations that rely on a dedicated GPU (dGPU). The catch: iGPU “off” behavior depends on whether you’re changing Windows settings or BIOS/UEFI firmware.

This guide gives you the fastest path to turn off iGPU in Windows, plus the most dependable method (BIOS/UEFI). You’ll also get troubleshooting steps for the most common failure cases like black screens and games still using the iGPU.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What Disabling iGPU Actually Does (and Why You’d Do It)

An iGPU is the graphics processor built into your CPU (Intel HD/UHD/Iris Xe, AMD Radeon Graphics on Ryzen APUs). Disabling it can mean either Windows stops using the device, or firmware stops initializing it at boot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Typical reasons people disable it:

  • Force everything onto a dedicated GPU for cleaner performance and fewer compatibility edge cases.
  • Reduce power usage on some systems when the dGPU is controlled separately (more common on desktops).
  • Fix multi-GPU conflicts where apps pick the “wrong” adapter or drivers fight over the primary display.
  • Workaround buggy iGPU-driver behavior on specific Windows builds.

Important: If you’re on a laptop with hybrid graphics, “disabling the iGPU” may not be fully supported by BIOS, and it can cause display issues. In those cases, per-app GPU selection is often safer than a hard iGPU disable.

Before You Start: Requirements and Risks

Before you disable iGPU, confirm two things: your display cable is connected to the right GPU, and you can recover your system if the change causes boot/display problems.

Prerequisites

  • A working dedicated GPU installed (NVIDIA or AMD) if you intend to fully turn off iGPU output.
  • Your monitor connected to the dGPU ports (not motherboard video output) after you disable iGPU.
  • Basic recovery plan: know how to boot into BIOS setup and, if needed, revert settings.

Risks to understand

  • No display after BIOS change is the biggest risk. It usually happens when the monitor is plugged into the motherboard while iGPU is disabled.
  • Windows may still need the iGPU for some firmware features, especially on laptops.
  • Some Windows updates can reassign graphics preferences or reinstall drivers.

Method 1: Disable iGPU from Windows Device Manager

This is the quickest way to try turning off the iGPU. It changes Windows device state, not your BIOS. If the iGPU is required for display or system stability, you may lose video output.

Windows 10

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Identify your iGPU entry (common names: Intel(R) UHD Graphics, Intel(R) HD Graphics, Radeon Graphics).
  4. Right-click the iGPU and select Disable device.
  5. Confirm the prompt.
  6. Reboot your PC.

Windows 11

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Open Display adapters.
  3. Right-click the iGPU and choose Disable device.
  4. Click Yes to confirm.
  5. Restart Windows.

What to expect after disabling

  • Windows may reduce the number of display adapters listed in Device Manager.
  • Some apps may stop offering iGPU-specific settings.
  • If Windows needs the iGPU for display, you may get a black screen or the monitor may lose signal—especially if you plugged the cable into the motherboard ports.

Method 2 (Most Reliable): Turn Off iGPU in BIOS/UEFI

Turning off the iGPU in BIOS/UEFI is the closest thing to a “real” iGPU disable. It prevents the iGPU from initializing at boot, which is why it’s more consistent than Device Manager.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find the correct setting

Go hunting for options related to integrated graphics, internal graphics, or primary display. Names vary by vendor and firmware version, but they’re usually under Advanced, Chipset, or Video Configuration.

Typical BIOS options you may see

  • Integrated Graphics → set to Disabled
  • iGPU / Internal Graphics → set to Disabled
  • Primary Display → set to PCIe or PEG
  • Multi-Monitor → set to Disabled (sometimes present on desktops)

Step-by-step BIOS flow (works on most motherboards/laptops)

  1. Shut down your PC.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press the BIOS key repeatedly (common keys: Del, F2, Esc).
  3. Enter the firmware settings UI and look for a menu named Advanced or Chipset.
  4. Locate the integrated graphics setting.
  5. Set Integrated Graphics (or similarly named option) to Disabled.
  6. Set Primary Display to PCIe/PEG if that option exists.
  7. Save and exit (usually F10 → Save & Exit).

Important: connect your monitor to the right port

When iGPU is disabled in BIOS, the motherboard video output usually won’t work. Plug your monitor into the dedicated GPU ports (HDMI/DisplayPort on the NVIDIA/AMD card).

If you leave the monitor connected to the motherboard and disable iGPU, you’ll often get “no signal” or a black screen.

Method 3: Force dGPU Output and Avoid iGPU for Rendering

On many systems—especially laptops—you don’t need to fully disable the iGPU to get the desired result. You can keep both GPUs available but force apps to use the dGPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional way to check for outdated or incompatible Windows graphics drivers; you can also update them manually from the GPU or motherboard vendor.

Update Windows and chipset drivers first

  • Install Windows updates on Windows 10 (22H2) or Windows 11 (23H2/24H2) before you start changing GPU devices.
  • Update your motherboard chipset driver (AMD Chipset Driver or Intel Chipset Device Software) from the PC or motherboard vendor.

Reinstall GPU drivers cleanly

  1. Download the latest driver package for your dedicated GPU (NVIDIA/AMD) from the vendor site.
  2. Use the installer’s option like Clean installation (NVIDIA) or perform a clean install if available (AMD Adrenalin usually supports clean install during installation).
  3. After reinstalling the dGPU driver, reboot.
  4. Then disable iGPU again using Device Manager or BIOS.

Intel vs AMD: Common iGPU Naming and Where the Switch Lives

Most confusion comes from not recognizing which adapter is the iGPU, or from expecting the same BIOS label across vendors.

Intel iGPU (HD Graphics / UHD Graphics / Iris Xe)

  • Device Manager entries commonly start with Intel(R) UHD Graphics or Intel(R) Iris Xe Graphics.
  • BIOS labels often include Integrated Graphics and may also offer iGPU Multi-Monitor.

AMD iGPU (Radeon Graphics on Ryzen APUs)

  • Device Manager entries may show AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics.
  • BIOS may call it Integrated Graphics or include an iGPU enable toggle under Chipset.

Troubleshooting: When Disabling iGPU Doesn’t Work

Disabling graphics devices sounds simple, but real-world systems differ. Here are the fixes that work most often.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No display / black screen after BIOS change

  1. Power off the PC completely.
  2. Boot back into BIOS (repeatedly press Del or F2).
  3. Set Integrated Graphics back to Enabled or restore Primary Display to Auto.
  4. Save and exit.
  5. Confirm your monitor cable is in the dGPU output, then try disabling again.

If you can’t see BIOS at all, you may need to use a different display output (some systems require a specific port type like DisplayPort vs HDMI for initialization timing).

Device Manager won’t let you disable

If Disable device is greyed out or you can’t fully disable the adapter, Windows likely considers it needed for display or system functions.

Games still use iGPU

  1. Open Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
  2. Set the game’s .exe to High performance.
  3. Also check vendor control panels (NVIDIA Control Panel / AMD Radeon Software) for per-app GPU selection.
  4. Restart the game and verify by checking Task Manager → Performance → GPU.

Stuttering, crashes, or driver rollback loops

  • Reinstall the latest dGPU driver using a clean installation option.
  • Disable any unstable overclocks for the dGPU while testing.
  • If you changed BIOS settings too aggressively, revert to “Auto” for Primary Display and retry only the iGPU disable.

Hybrid graphics laptop quirks

Many notebooks implement a power-saving MUX/hybrid system. In those setups, BIOS may not offer a true iGPU disable without breaking display paths.

  • If available, use the laptop’s graphics mode setting (e.g., NVIDIA Optimus toggle, AMD MUX, or BIOS “Discrete only” mode).
  • If not available, prefer per-app GPU selection in Windows and vendor software.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leaving the monitor plugged into the motherboard when disabling iGPU.
  • Disabling iGPU on a hybrid laptop without checking whether BIOS supports a true discrete-only mode.
  • Changing BIOS settings without saving the original values. If your firmware shows only “Disabled/Enabled,” take a photo of the current settings.
  • Assuming Device Manager disable equals firmware disable. Windows can reinitialize devices after updates or driver changes.
  • Not verifying which GPU is being used. Always confirm in Task Manager (Performance → GPU) for the specific game/app.

FAQ: Turn Off iGPU in Minutes

Will disabling iGPU improve FPS?

Often it won’t increase raw FPS on a system where your games are already running on the dedicated GPU. The real benefit is avoiding mis-selection and reducing conflicts between adapters.

Is it safe to disable iGPU in Windows Device Manager?

Usually yes if your display is connected to the dedicated GPU and Windows doesn’t depend on the iGPU for your display path. If you’re unsure, start with per-app GPU selection instead.

Does BIOS disable iGPU guarantee it can’t be used?

It typically prevents initialization at boot, so Windows has no iGPU device to use. However, some systems (especially laptops) may have firmware behaviors that still involve internal graphics for specific display features.

What if I disable iGPU and then Windows won’t boot?

Reboot into BIOS, re-enable integrated graphics, and restore Primary Display to its previous setting. If needed, update chipset and GPU drivers once the system is stable.

Can I disable iGPU and still use a second monitor?

You can, but only if you connect both monitors to the dedicated GPU (or ensure your BIOS supports iGPU multi-monitor routing). If monitors are on motherboard outputs, you’ll need iGPU enabled or move the cables to the dGPU.

Final Thoughts

If you want the fastest, reversible test, disable iGPU from Windows Device Manager first. For the most consistent “turn it off” behavior, use BIOS/UEFI—just make sure your monitor is connected to the dedicated GPU before you change the firmware setting.

When things go sideways, revert using the same method you changed, then verify app-level GPU selection and driver health. That combination is what keeps this process boring—in the best way.
