How to Disable Hardware Acceleration in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge

Disable hardware acceleration as a reversible browser troubleshooting test, with steps for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge and guidance on what to check next.

Turning off browser hardware acceleration is a reversible troubleshooting test for graphics problems such as flicker, visual artifacts, or crashes. It makes the browser rely more on software rendering instead of using the graphics processor (GPU) for some work. Because that can increase CPU use and affect smoothness, restart the browser after changing the setting, test the same problem, and turn acceleration back on if the change does not help.

What hardware acceleration does

Hardware acceleration lets a browser use the GPU for some display, video, and graphics tasks. Mozilla says Firefox can use the GPU to display videos, games, and animations, reducing work for the main processor (CPU). The exact effect depends on the browser, graphics hardware, driver, and content.

GPU and driver combinations can sometimes cause browser crashes or trouble displaying page text and other objects. Turning acceleration off can help determine whether the problem changes when the browser uses software rendering instead. It does not establish that the GPU is defective or guarantee a fix.

When to try turning it off

Try the setting if you are troubleshooting a repeatable display or playback issue, such as flicker, artifacts, or a crash that may involve graphics rendering. Change only this setting, restart the browser fully, and reproduce the same issue so you can compare the result.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface

Software rendering can increase CPU use for video, WebGL, and canvas content, and may make some graphics or playback less smooth. If performance gets worse, or the original problem does not change, restore the acceleration setting.

How to turn off hardware acceleration

Google Chrome

  1. Open the Chrome menu and select Settings.
  2. Open System.
  3. Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Restart Chrome, then test the problem again.

Google gives this as one troubleshooting step for Chrome crashes or startup problems, not a universal fix. Its guidance also suggests checking whether the page works in another browser and whether extensions may be involved. Google Chrome Help: Fix Chrome if it crashes or won’t open.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
  2. Under General, find the Performance section.
  3. Uncheck Use recommended performance settings to reveal the additional controls.
  4. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  5. Quit Firefox and start it again, then test the same issue.

Firefox may hide the acceleration control when it detects an incompatible graphics driver. Mozilla describes disabling acceleration as a possible diagnostic step for crashes or display trouble on some graphics processor and driver combinations. Microsoft Edge

  1. In Edge, open edge://settings/system.
  2. Look for the graphics-acceleration control. Depending on the Edge version, it may be labelled Use graphics acceleration when available; the label or location can vary.
  3. Turn the control off and restart Edge.
  4. Reproduce the issue. To inspect graphics status, open edge://gpu and review Graphics Feature Status.

Microsoft’s guidance identifies the system settings page and the GPU status page, but does not establish one click-by-click off path for every Edge version. If the status indicates software-only rendering when acceleration is expected, Microsoft recommends checking the graphics driver and acceleration setting. How to judge the result and what to try next

  • The problem improves: Acceleration or its interaction with the driver may be involved. You can leave it off temporarily while troubleshooting, but weigh that against higher CPU use or reduced smoothness.
  • The problem is unchanged: Turn acceleration back on. Check for a page-specific issue, test in another browser, or investigate extensions where relevant.
  • The problem worsens: Restore the original setting; software rendering may be a poor fit for the content or computer.

If graphics trouble persists, check for an updated graphics driver through the computer or GPU maker’s official channel. Mozilla notes that graphics behavior varies across cards, drivers, and operating systems; its guidance also treats disabling WebGL through advanced configuration as a separate, more advanced measure, not the routine first step. Mozilla Support: Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL.

Menu wording and placement can change between browser releases. Mozilla’s troubleshooting article was updated June 12, 2026, and its graphics-driver guidance May 27, 2026; consult the linked help pages if your controls differ.
