To hide Gravatars in WordPress, go to Settings > Discussion, find Avatars, select Don’t show Avatars, and click Save Changes. WordPress describes Gravatar as its default source for commenter pictures; the setting suppresses avatar display in comments.
Turn off avatar display in the WordPress dashboard
- Sign in to your WordPress dashboard with an administrator account.
- Open Settings > Discussion.
- Scroll to the Avatars section and select Don’t show Avatars.
- Click Save Changes.
WordPress’s Settings Discussion screen documentation describes this option as suppressing avatar display in comments. Its guide to using Gravatars also gives the dashboard path and explains the avatar controls.
Don’t confuse hiding avatars with changing the default image
The Default Avatar choices determine which fallback image appears for commenters who do not have a custom avatar. They do not turn avatar display off. To hide avatars in comments, use Don’t show Avatars instead.
Check other places where pictures still appear
After saving, inspect a page with comments and any other parts of the site that show user pictures. The documented control applies to comments, but a theme, plugin, membership feature, or custom integration may generate or force avatar output independently. WordPress notes that plugins can override these settings.

#1 Best Overall
If images remain, identify which component displays them and check its own settings or ask its developer. WordPress’s get_avatar() reference documents the core function’s use of the show_avatars option, as well as arguments and filters that can affect output; it does not guarantee that the dashboard option controls every plugin’s implementation.
Advanced fallback: filter core avatar markup
For a site where the normal setting is insufficient, a developer can use WordPress’s get_avatar filter to change the returned avatar HTML. A historical example recorded in WordPress Trac ticket #43799 is:
add_filter( 'get_avatar', '__return_empty_string', 1000 );
This returns an empty string for avatar markup passed through that filter. It is not a universal switch: themes or plugins may display pictures through another route or deliberately override core behavior. Add custom code in a maintainable location, such as a site-specific plugin, and have a developer check the effects on layouts that expect an avatar element.
