“Disabling Alienware” can mean several different things: stopping Alienware Command Center from switching lighting and performance presets when a game launches, turning off the in-game overlay, or removing the software entirely. Dell documents the first two as simple settings in Command Center 6.x. It does not publish a safe universal list of services or startup items to switch off. This guide covers what Dell supports and where to be careful.
First, identify what you want to stop
Dell’s Alienware Command Center quick guide says the application brings together controls such as power, thermal, audio, lighting, game profiles and monitoring. It also says that available features and software versions differ by computer. Before you follow any steps, note three things:
- Your device model. Some controls exist only on certain systems.
- Your Command Center version. The steps below come from Dell’s 6.x documentation. If your menus look different, the labels may differ too.
- The specific behavior. Automatic presets, overlay launch, lighting, thermal behavior and the whole application are separate problems with separate fixes.
Stop automatic per-game lighting and performance changes (6.x)
By default, Command Center can switch lighting (AlienFX) and performance presets when a game starts. Dell describes two ways to stop this in its 6.x guide on automated experiences.
For one game
- Open the game’s Game Title page in Command Center.
- Select the Performance tab or the AlienFX tab.
- Check Follow the system default.
Command Center then stops switching that game’s presets while it runs, and your computer-wide preset stays in effect.

- Dell Services: 1 Year Onsite Service provides support when and where you need it. Dell will come to your home, office, or location of choice, if an issue covered by Limited Hardware Warranty cannot be resolved remotely.
For all games
- Go to Global settings > Change settings.
- Choose System to disable automated experiences. Choosing Per Game turns them back on.
Turn off the in-game overlay launch (6.x)
To stop the overlay appearing automatically after a game starts, open Settings > Overlay and clear Automatic launch overlay in game mode. This is described in Dell’s 6.x Settings guide. It affects only overlay launch. Everything else in Command Center keeps running.
What not to disable
Dell’s gaming performance guidance advises against disabling Dell or Alienware entries in Startup apps, antivirus software, or any entry you don’t recognize. Treat broad “disable all Alienware services” advice with suspicion. Dell’s documentation does not establish a safe universal set of services to turn off, so switching things off blindly could break lighting, thermal or power controls that are model-specific.

- Introducing the Cryo-Chamber: Developed by our engineers, Area-51’s new Cryo-Chamber structure, located at the bottom of the laptop, focuses air to the core components where it matters the most.
- Bringing comfort to the forefront: Our new Area-51 laptops combine mystery and other-wordly design with fluid contours and soft surfaces that inspires comfortable gameplay for hours.
The sources also don’t show that disabling Command Center raises frame rates, lowers temperatures or extends battery life, so don’t expect those results.
If you want to remove Command Center completely
Dell does not offer one universal removal procedure in the material above. Removal steps depend on your model, Windows version and which Alienware components are installed. Use instructions from Dell Support matched to your exact system. Be aware that removal can take away fan, power-mode and lighting controls that your hardware relies on.

- Blend into any environment: Activate Stealth Mode with F7 to turn AlienFX RGB keyboard lighting to white and switch performance to Quiet Mode for a more subtle, covert experience*. *Quiet mode lowers noise produced by your system's cooling fans when possible. While your computer's performance might be slightly impacted, this option may also reduce both CPU and GPU power consumptions.
Laptop heat: an optional note
If your real goal is lower temperatures, Dell’s performance guidance says to keep laptop vents clear and to consider a cooling pad. That is optional airflow care, not a requirement for changing any software setting here.
