What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To digitize a DVD or Blu-ray, you need a computer and an optical drive that reads that disc format, a way to create a video file, and enough storage for the result. The practical workflow has separate stages: read the disc, save or convert its video, then check that the file plays with the language, subtitles, and chapters you want. Whether you may copy or bypass protection on a particular disc depends on applicable law; owning it does not automatically settle that question.
What you need before you start
- A computer with an optical drive. Check the drive specifications against your collection. A Blu-ray-capable drive is needed for Blu-ray discs; verify that it also reads DVDs if you want one drive for both. If your computer has no suitable drive, an external USB optical drive is an option. Check the model’s supported formats, connection and power requirements, and compatibility with your operating system before buying.
- Software for the job you intend to do. Disc reading and video transcoding are distinct tasks. HandBrake converts supported video files; it is not a universal tool for reading or decrypting protected commercial discs.
- Storage for the files. Your computer’s internal drive may be enough for a small project. An external HDD or SSD can help when local storage is limited. Required capacity depends on how many titles you save, the output settings, and whether you keep both source files and smaller converted versions.
Choose between keeping a source file and converting it
Decide whether you want a file closer to the disc-derived source for archiving, or a smaller file suited to everyday playback. The right choice depends on your storage, playback devices, and tolerance for conversion trade-offs. Conversion settings affect file size and can affect quality; there is no universal best setting or size estimate established here.

| Choice | What it does | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a source copy | Retains a copy produced by the disc-reading stage without asking HandBrake to re-encode the video. | May take more storage; compatibility depends on the file and your playback device. |
| Transcode with HandBrake | Converts supported input video to MP4, MKV, or WebM. HandBrake always converts video rather than passing it through unchanged, and can reduce file size. | Output settings affect size and quality. Check that desired audio, subtitles, and chapters are included and that the result works on your devices. |
HandBrake’s official documentation describes supported input and output formats, its conversion role, and its limitations in HandBrake Documentation — About HandBrake. Choose MP4, MKV, or WebM based on what your intended players support; the format name alone does not guarantee that every device will play every file’s video and audio.

HandBrake is a transcoder, not a general-purpose disc decryption tool. The HandBrake Team says, “HandBrake also does not defeat or circumvent copy protection of any kind.” Its documentation notes that many commercial DVDs and Blu-rays are protected and names MakeMKV as an application that can create DVD/Blu-ray copies HandBrake can open. That is a description of a technical relationship between applications—not a legal endorsement, a guarantee that a particular disc will work, or permission to copy it.

At a high level, the workflow is: use a compatible drive and an appropriate lawful method to create a video file from a disc; if you want a different format or smaller file, open supported input in HandBrake and convert it; then check the resulting file. Do not assume HandBrake can open a disc directly or that another application can handle every disc.
Use this practical workflow
- Identify the disc and drive. Confirm whether the disc is a DVD or Blu-ray and verify that your optical drive supports that format. For an external drive, also check its connection, power needs, and operating-system compatibility.
- Decide what you are allowed to do. Check the rules that apply where you live and to the specific use. Do not treat disc ownership as automatic permission to bypass access controls or make a digital copy.
- Create a source video file only through a method you may lawfully use. Disc reading is separate from transcoding. If the source file is supported, HandBrake can open it for conversion; its documentation identifies MakeMKV as one application that can create copies HandBrake can open.
- Convert only if you need to. In HandBrake, select the supported source, choose an output container—MP4, MKV, or WebM—and set conversion options for your device and storage needs. HandBrake re-encodes video, so keep a source copy if preserving that version matters to you.
- Check the output before filing it away. Play the file on the device you intend to use. Confirm you selected the correct title and that the expected language track, subtitles, and chapters are available. If anything is missing or playback fails, revisit the source selection and conversion options.
- Store and label the file. Save it where you have room, use a clear title and year or edition where useful, and keep a backup if the file matters to you. Choose HDD or SSD capacity based on your collection and whether you retain source copies as well as converted files.
Check the law where you live
Copyright and anti-circumvention rules vary by jurisdiction and can depend on the work, the method, and the purpose. In the United States, the Copyright Office’s 37 CFR § 201.40 describes specific, conditional classes of uses for which the circumvention prohibition does not apply. Among them are narrow provisions involving short portions of lawfully made and acquired DVD/Blu-ray motion pictures for specified criticism, comment, or educational purposes, subject to conditions; separate defined provisions address accessibility work by educational institutions and preservation by eligible libraries, archives, or museums. These are not a general personal-viewing exemption, and buying a disc does not by itself establish permission to circumvent access controls or make a digital copy.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming any optical drive reads every disc. A DVD-only drive will not read Blu-rays; confirm formats for the actual model.
- Expecting HandBrake to decrypt a protected disc. Its documentation expressly says it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection.
- Converting without keeping a source when you need one. HandBrake always converts video, so it is not a video pass-through option.
- Choosing settings by an unsupported universal rule. File size, quality, and compatibility depend on settings and playback devices; no single bitrate or capacity figure applies to every collection.
- Skipping a playback check. Verify the title, language, subtitles, chapters, and target-device playback before treating the file as finished.
