How to Dictate Prompts on Your Phone or Computer

Use built-in dictation to speak a prompt into its text field, check the transcription, and submit it yourself. Instructions cover iPhone, Gboard, Windows 11, Mac, and VS Code Chat.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To dictate a prompt, open the text field where you normally type, turn on your phone or computer’s built-in dictation, speak, review the transcription, and submit it yourself. On iPhone, use the keyboard’s Dictate button; on Android with Gboard, tap the keyboard microphone; on Windows 11, press Windows + H; and on Mac, use the Dictation control or shortcut. You usually do not need a separate app or microphone.

How dictating a prompt works

Dictation converts speech into text in the currently focused text field. That means you can speak a prompt into an AI chat box much as you would dictate a message or search query. The speech-to-text step and sending the prompt are separate: after speaking, check the text and use the app’s send or submit control when you are ready.

Start with the microphone built into your phone or computer. An external headset microphone is optional; it can be useful if you need a hands-free setup, but it is not required for the workflows below. Recognition quality and supported features vary by device, language, settings, and app. These instructions describe platform controls, not comparative accuracy tests.

The basic sequence is the same across platforms: focus the field where the prompt belongs, activate dictation, speak, inspect the resulting text, stop dictation if it is still active, and submit with the destination app’s control. Keeping those steps distinct helps prevent two common mistakes: dictating while the wrong field is active, or assuming the words have been sent just because dictation has stopped.

For example, a spoken request can include both the task and its constraints: “Summarize this passage in three bullet points. Use plain language. Do not add facts that are not in the passage.” After the speech is transcribed, verify the number, the negation, and the formatting instruction. Dictation does not decide whether the prompt is complete or accurate; it only enters text for you to review.

Dictate a prompt on iPhone

Turn on Dictation

  1. Open Settings > General > Keyboard.
  2. Turn on Enable Dictation.

Speak into the prompt field

  1. Open the app you want to use and tap its prompt or message field.
  2. Tap the Dictate button on the onscreen keyboard.
  3. Speak the prompt, including punctuation or formatting instructions where supported.
  4. Read the inserted text and correct any errors before submitting it.
  5. Tap Dictate again, say “Stop dictation,” or wait for dictation to stop after 30 seconds without detected speech.

Apple documents spoken punctuation, commands such as “new line” and “new paragraph,” spelling a word letter by letter, and simple select, delete, undo, and redo commands. The exact commands available can depend on language and context. Apple says processing occurs on the iPhone in many languages without an internet connection. However, text dictated into a search field may be sent to the search engine, so consider where the text is going as well as how dictation is processed.

Spoken punctuation can make a prompt easier to scan after transcription. Say punctuation where you want it, or use a supported line-break command to separate the task from its requirements. Then look at the inserted text: a spoken instruction such as “new paragraph” is useful only if the field displays the break where you intended. If a name or unfamiliar term is rendered incorrectly, Apple documents spelling a word letter by letter as one way to enter it; you can also select and correct text using the available editing commands or the keyboard.

Dictation is activated from the onscreen keyboard, so first make sure the intended text field is open and the keyboard is visible. If the Dictate control is missing, confirm that Dictation is enabled in Keyboard settings. Do not assume that every command works in every language or field, and do not send the prompt until you have checked the transcription.

Dictate a prompt on Android with Gboard

Start voice typing

  1. Open the AI chat or other app and tap its text field to show Gboard.
  2. Tap the keyboard’s microphone and speak your prompt.
  3. Review and edit the transcription, then submit it using the app’s send control.

To enable advanced voice typing, open Gboard settings and choose Voice typing. Google documents commands including “Delete last word,” “Clear,” “Send,” “Next,” and “Stop.” Command availability and behavior can vary with the device, language, and keyboard version.

Google says advanced voice typing keeps spoken text on the device except when you use “Fix it” or detailed edits. Detailed editing is documented for Pixel 8 and later in English (US). For detailed edits, Google says the voice-command transcript and full text in the field are sent to its servers for processing, while also saying it does not store audio or text on its servers. If you do not see the described controls, your device, language, or Gboard version may not support that feature.

Those voice commands are controls for the typing workflow, not a reason to skip review. “Delete last word” and “Clear” can help revise what is in the field, while “Stop” ends the voice-typing session. Because the available commands depend on the setup, check what the keyboard actually recognizes and confirm the text afterward. In particular, review commands such as “Send” carefully: the destination app may act on a send command, whereas the ordinary workflow is to finish dictating, inspect the prompt, and then choose the app’s submit control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Advanced voice typing and detailed editing are not interchangeable descriptions of one universal Android feature. The documented detailed-edit capability has a specific device and language scope—Pixel 8 and later, English (US)—and its processing behavior differs from ordinary on-device advanced voice typing. If you are using a different Android phone, language, or keyboard version, follow the controls presented on that device rather than expecting those exact capabilities.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Use voice typing on Windows 11

  1. Click the prompt field so the cursor is in the text box.
  2. Press Windows logo key + H to open Voice Typing.
  3. Speak your prompt, then review and edit the inserted text.
  4. Submit the prompt from the app when it is ready.

Windows 11 calls its dictation interface Voice Typing, and Microsoft says it uses online speech recognition. Contributing voice clips is optional. Before starting, check that the microphone you intend to use is connected and available to the app.

Older Windows instructions may refer to Windows Speech Recognition. Microsoft states that Voice Access replaced Windows Speech Recognition on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later in September 2024, so those older instructions may not match current Windows 11.

The key combination opens the voice-typing interface; it does not choose the prompt’s content for you. Click inside the actual chat or prompt box first, then verify that the cursor remains there when you begin speaking. If no text appears, check whether the intended microphone is connected and available to the app before troubleshooting the prompt itself. As Voice Typing uses online recognition, consider that processing requirement when choosing whether to dictate sensitive material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When following older tutorials, pay attention to the Windows version and the feature name they describe. The replacement noted by Microsoft applies to Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, and took effect in September 2024. If the labels or controls in a tutorial do not match your current system, use the current Voice Typing workflow rather than assuming the older steps are still applicable.

Dictate a prompt on Mac

Enable Dictation and choose a microphone

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation.
  2. Turn on Dictation. If the Mac is listening to the wrong input, choose the intended microphone source in Keyboard settings.

Start, review, and stop

  1. Click the prompt field in the destination app.
  2. Start Dictation with the microphone key, if your keyboard has one; your configured Dictation shortcut; or Edit > Start Dictation.
  3. Speak the prompt and review the resulting text.
  4. Stop with Escape, the microphone key, or the configured shortcut. Dictation also stops after 30 seconds without detected speech.
  5. Submit the prompt in the app when you are satisfied with the text.

You can dictate punctuation and, where supported, say “new line” or “new paragraph.” Language and region availability varies, so a control or command described for one setup may not appear in another.

If the Mac transcribes nothing or appears to listen through the wrong device, check the microphone source in Keyboard settings. The headset or microphone is optional, but selecting the intended input matters when more than one source is available. Once the text appears, read it in the destination field before submitting; the Mac’s Dictation controls do not replace the AI app’s own send button.

Mac users can start dictation in more than one way: a microphone key when the keyboard has one, the configured shortcut, or the menu command. Choose whichever is available in the current setup. To stop, use Escape, the microphone key, or that shortcut; if you pause without detected speech, the 30-second timeout can stop dictation automatically. A timeout is not a confirmation that the prompt is ready to send, so check the text and submit it deliberately.

Dictate directly in an AI chat tool

Many chat tools accept text in a standard input field, so the phone or computer’s built-in dictation may work there just as it does in other apps. The specific behavior of the chat app matters: dictating text does not automatically mean that the app will send it.

VS Code documents a microphone button or keyboard shortcut for dictation in its Chat input. In that workflow, dictated text is inserted into the field without submitting the request. VS Code describes the built-in feature as experimental, so its controls may change.

VS Code’s processing also depends on the client. On supported desktop platforms, it downloads a speech model and then recognizes speech locally and offline. The VS Code web client streams audio to Microsoft AI voice service, requires a network connection, and requires GitHub sign-in. These details apply to VS Code’s documented feature and should not be assumed to describe other AI chat products.

For any other AI chat tool, distinguish three separate things: the microphone feature you activate, the text field receiving the words, and the control that submits the finished prompt. The device’s operating-system dictation may simply fill a normal text box. A chat product may also have its own voice control, but behavior documented for VS Code does not establish how another product processes speech or whether it submits automatically. Check the product’s own controls and privacy information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the VS Code workflow, the microphone button or shortcut is for inserting dictated text, not for sending the chat request. That can be helpful when you want to edit before submission: pause or stop dictation, inspect the field, make changes, and then submit through Chat. Since VS Code calls the feature experimental, do not rely on a particular button location or shortcut remaining unchanged across releases.

What to check before dictating confidential prompts

Dictation privacy depends on the operating system, keyboard feature, settings, and sometimes the specific command you use. A prompt can contain sensitive information even when the destination app is familiar, so check the dictation service’s processing behavior and the app’s own privacy terms before speaking confidential material.

  • iPhone and Mac: Apple says Keyboard settings indicates whether audio and transcripts are processed on-device. If they are not, dictated content is sent to and processed on Apple servers; Apple says it is not stored unless you opt into Improve Siri and Dictation.
  • Windows 11: Voice Typing uses online speech recognition.
  • Gboard: Google says advanced voice typing keeps text on-device except when using “Fix it” or detailed edits. Detailed edits send the voice-command transcript and full text in the field to Google servers for processing; Google says it does not store audio or text on its servers.
  • VS Code: The documented desktop and web workflows differ: supported desktop platforms recognize speech locally after downloading a model, while the web client streams audio to Microsoft AI voice service.

These descriptions are specific to the features named above. Settings, supported languages, and processing behavior can change with software updates, and another app’s text field may have its own handling rules.

“On-device” and “private” are not synonyms for every part of a workflow. The destination app still receives the prompt when you submit it, and some features have exceptions for particular correction or editing commands. For Apple, check the Keyboard settings indication for whether audio and transcripts are processed on-device. For Gboard, take account of the “Fix it” and detailed-edit exceptions. For Windows 11 Voice Typing, account for online speech recognition. For VS Code, distinguish its supported desktop model workflow from the web client’s audio stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the prompt contains confidential material, decide whether you are comfortable with both the dictation feature’s processing and the destination app’s terms. If you cannot establish how a feature handles the content, do not assume it remains on your device. Settings and service behavior can change, so check the current controls for the platform and app you are using rather than applying one platform’s privacy description to another.

Make dictated prompts easier to review

  • Speak in short, complete instructions. Pause between requirements so you can spot missing or misheard words in the transcription.
  • Say formatting aloud when useful. On supported systems, spoken punctuation and commands such as “new line” or “new paragraph” can help organize a prompt. Check the result rather than assuming every command was applied.
  • Inspect names, numbers, acronyms, and technical terms. These are easy to overlook when reading a prompt you just spoke. Correct them before sending.
  • Separate the transcript from submission. Keep the cursor in the intended field, then use the app’s own send or submit control after reviewing. This is especially important in workflows where dictation only inserts text.
  • Check the microphone input if nothing appears. Confirm the microphone is available to the app; on Mac, check the selected source in Dictation settings.

Dictation can be convenient, but there is no sourced accuracy percentage or speed guarantee for dictating prompts. The useful measure is whether the transcribed text says what you intended after you review it.

A good review is not just a quick glance at whether some text appeared. Compare the transcription with the intent of the prompt. Look for a missing “not,” a changed number, an incorrect name, or a formatting instruction that became ordinary text. Read the complete prompt from the beginning before submitting, especially if it includes several requirements. If a correction changes the meaning, read that sentence again after editing.

For a prompt with multiple parts, it can help to dictate one complete instruction at a time and pause before the next. Supported punctuation or line-break commands may help produce a readable structure, but commands vary by language and context. Where a command is not recognized, edit the text directly rather than repeating it without checking what is already in the field.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no basis here for claiming a particular dictation system is more accurate, faster, or more productive than another. The available controls and processing models differ, but they are not a controlled accuracy comparison. A headset with a microphone is an optional convenience for hands-free use or a closer input; it is not a prerequisite, and no recognition improvement should be assumed.

Choose a workflow that fits your device and needs

There is no universally best option established by these platform instructions. Choose based on how your device handles speech, whether a connection is needed, and whether the feature supports your language and desired editing controls.

  • For a phone: iPhone users can use the onscreen keyboard’s Dictate button; Android users with Gboard can use its keyboard microphone. Feature availability and privacy behavior differ.
  • For a Windows 11 PC: Voice Typing starts with Windows + H and uses online speech recognition.
  • For a Mac: Dictation is configured in Keyboard settings, where you can also select the microphone source.
  • For VS Code Chat: Its documented control inserts dictated text without sending it. Desktop and web processing differ, and the feature is experimental.
  • For private or sensitive content: Check the relevant setting and service behavior before speaking, and avoid dictating information you do not want processed according to those terms.

To compare options for your own situation, consider six questions: Where is speech processed—on the device or by a service? Does the feature need a network connection? Does it work in the actual app field where you compose prompts? Does it support your language and device? What editing and punctuation controls are available? Does the setup meet your accessibility or hands-free needs? The platform documentation covers different combinations of these capabilities; it does not establish one best choice for everyone.

For network needs, the documented differences are specific: Apple says iPhone processing is on-device in many languages without an internet connection; Windows 11 Voice Typing uses online speech recognition; VS Code desktop dictation on supported platforms recognizes locally and offline after downloading a model, while its web client requires a network connection. The Gboard description distinguishes ordinary advanced voice typing from correction and detailed-edit exceptions. Do not infer the requirements of an unlisted language, device, or command from these examples.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For language and device support, use the controls actually available on the device. Apple notes language and region variation on Mac, and Gboard’s detailed editing is documented for Pixel 8 and later in English (US). If your setup does not show a command or feature, it may not be available for that combination. These guides do not provide device-by-device tests or a benchmark, so choose based on compatibility, processing needs, and whether the resulting transcription is usable after review.

Do not assume that a command, language, offline mode, or privacy setting available on one device will work the same way on another. Confirm the control in the field you plan to use, and always inspect the final prompt before submitting it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I dictate a prompt on my phone?

Open the prompt field, show the keyboard, and activate its dictation control. On iPhone, enable Dictation under Settings > General > Keyboard, then tap Dictate on the onscreen keyboard. With Android and Gboard, tap the keyboard microphone. Speak, review and correct the inserted text, stop dictation if needed, and submit it with the app’s send control.

How do I use voice typing on my computer?

On Windows 11, click the prompt field and press Windows logo key + H to open Voice Typing. On Mac, enable Dictation under Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation, then start it with the microphone key if available, your configured shortcut, or Edit > Start Dictation. In either case, inspect the text and submit it in the app yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I talk instead of type in an AI chat?

Usually, built-in dictation can enter text in a standard chat input field just as it can in other text fields. Dictating and sending are separate steps in the documented VS Code Chat workflow: it inserts text without submitting the request. Other chat tools may behave differently, so check the app’s controls.

Does dictation automatically send my prompt?

Do not assume it does. Dictation commonly inserts text into the focused field, after which you review it and use the AI app’s own send or submit control. VS Code specifically documents that its Chat dictation inserts text without submitting the request.

Do I need a separate microphone or dictation app?

Not for the built-in workflows described here. Start with the phone or computer’s built-in microphone and dictation controls. An external headset microphone is optional for convenience or hands-free use; it is not required.

Can I dictate prompts without an internet connection?

It depends on the platform, language, and feature. Apple says iPhone Dictation processes on the device in many languages without internet. Windows 11 Voice Typing uses online speech recognition. VS Code’s supported desktop dictation downloads a speech model and then recognizes speech locally and offline, while its web client requires a network connection. Check the specific feature and language you plan to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is dictating a prompt private?

Processing varies. Apple Keyboard settings indicates whether audio and transcripts are processed on-device; otherwise dictated content is processed on Apple servers, with storage conditions described by Apple. Windows 11 Voice Typing uses online recognition. Google says Gboard advanced voice typing keeps text on-device except for “Fix it” or detailed edits, which have server-processing exceptions. Also check the destination app’s own privacy terms before dictating confidential material.

What should I do if dictation gets a word or number wrong?

Review the text before sending and correct names, numbers, acronyms, technical terms, and meaning-changing words such as “not.” Apple documents spelling a word letter by letter and simple select, delete, undo, and redo commands. Other available editing controls depend on the platform and feature.

Why do I not see the same dictation controls as in a guide?

Controls and commands depend on device, operating-system or keyboard version, language, and region. For example, Google documents detailed Gboard editing for Pixel 8 and later in English (US), while Apple notes language and region variation for Mac Dictation. Check the settings and current platform help for your own setup.

The Bottom Line

Open the prompt field, activate the dictation control built into your device, speak, and review the complete transcription before sending. iPhone, Gboard, Windows 11, and Mac each provide a built-in route; VS Code Chat also documents its own dictation workflow. Privacy and network requirements vary by feature, so check the relevant settings—especially for confidential prompts—and submit the text yourself when it is ready.
