Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →FFmpeg’s reconnect message tells you that a connection event occurred; by itself, it does not say whether the cause was your media, the encoder, the VPS’s outbound network, YouTube ingest, or an FFmpeg protocol setting. To narrow it down, align timestamped FFmpeg stderr with YouTube Live Control Room health messages, check the encoder and local archive, and measure upload capacity from the VPS that sends the stream. Without those measurements, the city name alone cannot establish a Kolkata-specific routing problem.
What to collect before changing settings
For each drop, build one incident record with times in UTC. YouTube’s Live Control Room metrics guidance describes stream health and status information, and its live streaming error guide describes timestamped errors. These are separate observations: compare them rather than treating either one as a complete diagnosis.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Save the complete FFmpeg stderr around the event, not just a copied reconnect line.
- Record the exact FFmpeg command, version, and build details. Run
ffmpeg -versionto capture version and configuration information. Redact the stream key before sharing or publishing the command. - Note whether FFmpeg exited, attempted another connection, remained running, or continued producing output. A running process is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Copy the corresponding Live Control Room health message and its timestamp.
- Record the VPS provider and plan, the stream’s configured video and audio bitrates, host load, and any outbound-capacity measurements taken from that VPS.
Keep the original timestamps and enough surrounding stderr to see what happened before and after the event. A reconnect attempt, a completed connection, continued output, and YouTube confirming healthy ingest are different milestones.
How to read FFmpeg reconnect logs
First identify the protocol and direction
Inspect the command line to identify the input protocol and the output protocol separately. A reconnect option intended for an HTTP input is not automatically an RTMP or RTMPS publishing option. FFmpeg documents reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, and related retry and delay controls under its HTTP protocol options. For example, FFmpeg describes reconnect as: “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.” That description is for HTTP; it is not a general-purpose instruction to add the flag to an RTMP output.

The same FFmpeg reference documents RTMP separately. Check the installed build and the relevant command help before changing options: protocol support can be enabled or disabled at build time, and available options depend on the protocol and build. The generic rw_timeout option is measured in microseconds and controls how long network read/write operations wait; it is not a reconnection mechanism and cannot create missing bandwidth.
Separate an attempt from a recovery
Read the events in order. Determine whether the message indicates a failed connection, a retry, a successful connection, or ongoing output, then check whether YouTube’s health status returned to healthy at the same time. Do not infer successful recovery from the word “reconnect” alone. If stderr does not make the transition clear, preserve the full output and compare it against the dashboard timeline rather than guessing from a single line.

Work through the likely causes in order
- Check the media and encoder. Inspect the stream in the encoder and compare it with a local archive, if available. Look for audio/video stopping or degrading, encoder errors, and unusual CPU load. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder output, errors, CPU, and archive before blaming the connection. If the media or archive fails at the drop time, investigate the source, encoding load, timestamps, and media settings first.
- Measure the actual VPS’s outbound capacity. Run repeated, representative outbound-capacity checks from the host sending the stream and align their times with incidents and host load. A speed test from your laptop or home connection does not measure the VPS’s egress path. YouTube’s streaming tips say total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend 20% headroom. Shared network use can reduce the capacity available to the stream.
- Compare capacity with the configured bitrate. Add the configured video and audio bitrates, then compare that total with usable, sustained VPS upload capacity. If demand is near or above the measured ceiling, lower the stream’s bitrate or otherwise reduce network demand before relying on retries. YouTube Help recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; the page’s publication year is not stated.
- Check YouTube’s ingest status and format guidance. Open the matching stream in Live Control Room and compare the health message with the UTC log timeline. Check that the protocol and stream format match YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, including its codec, frame-rate, keyframe-timing, and bitrate recommendations. YouTube’s error guide includes format-related errors, so a working network connection alone does not establish that ingest settings are correct. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
- Change one relevant setting at a time. If evidence points to an input protocol option, verify that the option is documented for that protocol and direction and available in the installed build. If the dashboard points to format or key configuration, address that specific message. Preserve the original command and logs so you can tell whether a change altered the outcome.
YouTube Help gives these example H.264 recommendations: 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are recommended encoder bitrates, not measurements of your VPS and not guarantees that a connection will remain stable; the guidance page’s publication year is not stated.
Use the evidence to distinguish causes
| Possible cause | Evidence to inspect | What it helps distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| Input, source, or media problem | FFmpeg input errors, local archive, audio/video quality | Whether the media itself degrades or stops. |
| Encoder or resource problem | Encoder errors and CPU load at the incident time | Whether local encoding falters alongside the drop. |
| Output or protocol configuration | Full command, input/output protocols, FFmpeg build, stderr | Whether an option is being applied to the protocol and direction it documents. |
| VPS outbound network | Measurements from the sending VPS, configured bitrate, headroom, correlated timestamps | Whether capacity or connectivity is interrupted or insufficient. |
| YouTube ingest or stream configuration | Live Control Room health messages, timestamped errors, format and encoder settings | Whether YouTube reports an ingest or format problem while local output appears healthy. |
These categories can overlap. For example, a network interruption may expose a retry-configuration problem, while a format error may occur during a period of otherwise stable connectivity.

When and how to escalate
Contact the VPS or network provider
If the encoder and archive remain healthy, measured sustained capacity has adequate headroom, and drops coincide with outbound connection trouble, send the VPS provider the incident timestamps, relevant host metrics, and route or destination evidence collected using its accepted diagnostic procedures. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends contacting the internet service provider when outbound connection problems are found; for a VPS stream, that means the VPS or network operator.

Use YouTube’s exact error message
If FFmpeg output appears healthy and the outbound path is stable but Live Control Room reports ingest errors, use the exact status text to investigate the relevant stream format, key, or ingest configuration. A reconnect log, the word “Kolkata,” or a drop by itself does not establish that the VPS provider or YouTube caused the incident.

Common diagnostic mistakes
- Blaming a Kolkata route without route evidence: the location alone says nothing conclusive about a particular VPS provider, network path, endpoint, or incident. Compare measurements and timestamps from the actual sending host.
- Testing from the wrong connection: home or laptop upload results do not establish VPS egress capacity.
- Treating every FFmpeg reconnect option alike: confirm protocol, direction, and installed build; the cited reconnect switches are documented for HTTP.
- Assuming a live process means a live stream: check continued output and YouTube’s matching health status.
- Adding retries to solve an unrelated fault: retries cannot repair bad media, inadequate sustained capacity, or a stream-format error.
- Sharing a command with its key exposed: remove the key before sending logs to a provider or posting a diagnostic report.
