How to Diagnose YouTube Stream Buffering with OBS Stats and Dropped Frames

A rising OBS dropped-frame count points toward your connection or bitrate; a flat count means it is time to check viewer conditions, YouTube stream health, and encoder workload.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with OBS’s dropped-frame counter while the buffering is happening. If the count is rising and the connection indicator is yellow or red, investigate the broadcaster’s connection to YouTube or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. If the counter stays flat, look beyond the broadcaster’s upload path: viewer networks and devices, YouTube stream health, and OBS rendering or encoding load can point to different causes.

Read OBS Stats before changing settings

In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the statistics during the interruption. Note whether the dropped-frame count is increasing and whether the connection indicator changes. A rising count paired with a yellow or red indicator points to an unstable connection to the streaming server or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to compensate; too many can eventually disconnect the stream. This is a connection symptom, not proof that the encoder is overloaded. See OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.

Keep the different OBS symptoms separate. Dropped frames concern the stream’s network connection. Rendering lag or an encoding-overload message calls for a check of local GPU and encoding workload. A viewer’s buffering report, by itself, does not establish either problem.

If OBS dropped frames are increasing

Check whether your upload path can sustain the bitrate

  • If possible, test with a wired connection. OBS cautions that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming.
  • Compare the configured streaming bitrate with the upload capacity available during the stream. Run an upload speed test; do not assume a connection can sustain the configured bitrate based on its advertised speed alone.
  • If you use a VPN, security software, or bundled network-prioritization utility, check whether it could be affecting the connection. OBS also recommends checking network drivers, modem or router connectivity, cables, and network devices. These are possible checks, not proof that any one component is faulty.
  • If local checks do not resolve the issue, contact your internet service provider. OBS’s connection guide covers these troubleshooting areas at obsproject.com/kb/stream-connection-troubleshooting.

Dynamic bitrate adjustment in OBS may help the stream adapt when a connection cannot keep up, but it does not repair the underlying connection and can lower video quality. OBS’s network optimizations and TCP pacing controls are Windows-only, not universal settings. If you test a network configuration change and it has no effect, preserve or restore the default rather than leaving an unhelpful change in place.

If viewers buffer but OBS shows no dropped frames

A flat OBS dropped-frame count means you have not found evidence of broadcaster-side dropped frames at that moment; it does not describe every viewer’s playback connection. Viewers use different networks, locations, and devices, so one person can buffer while your OBS connection remains stable. Ask whether the problem affects one viewer, people on the same household or office connection, or viewers on separate connections. If practical, ask an affected viewer to try another device or network.

Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and any reported errors alongside OBS. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide distinguishes reports from one viewer, several viewers sharing a connection, and viewers on different connections. These patterns can help narrow the investigation, but are clues rather than guarantees:

YouTube recommends inspecting encoder output and CPU load, testing the outbound connection, and contacting your ISP if a connection test shows a problem. Its live-stream troubleshooting guide explains how viewer impact patterns inform the diagnosis.

If OBS output is choppy or encoding is overloaded

OBS uses GPU resources to composite scenes and render output. If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload, check GPU usage and close unnecessary programs that compete for resources. Simplify complex scenes and reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps instead of 60 fps when 60 fps is not working; lower frame rate affects motion smoothness, while lower resolution reduces output detail. Make one change at a time and check whether the relevant OBS symptom improves.

Do not treat a normal dropped-frame counter as evidence of encoder overload, or an encoding-overload message as proof of a weak internet connection. Use the matching OBS indicator and YouTube’s stream-health information. See OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide.

Review bitrate, quality, and latency before the next stream

Choose a quality and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain, and test before the event. During the stream, monitor OBS Stats and YouTube stream health and messages. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, but that does not guarantee every viewer will avoid interruptions. Its encoder settings guidance covers recommended settings and testing.

Latency is the delay between capture and playback. Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but YouTube warns it may mean more playback buffering. Treat it as a tradeoff: if uninterrupted viewing matters more than near-real-time interaction, do not assume the lowest-latency setting is the fix. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
