FFmpeg logs can help you find when a YouTube live stream starts stalling or failing, but FFmpeg’s normal progress output is not a packet-loss counter. To diagnose the cause, line up a timestamped FFmpeg log with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, your encoder and local recording, and evidence from the sending computer’s network. A timeout, dropped-frame warning, or low bitrate alone does not prove that packets were lost—or identify where.
What an FFmpeg log can—and cannot—tell you
FFmpeg’s log is an application-level view of the publishing process. Its progress statistics describe FFmpeg’s processing; they do not, by themselves, count lost IP packets or show where along the route loss occurred. RTMP in FFmpeg’s documented protocol description runs over TCP/IP, so network-level evidence must come from a measurement at the relevant host or path, such as interface or TCP counters or a packet capture.

Likewise, “dropped frames” is not a synonym for lost network packets. First identify which stage reported the drop: source, encoder, FFmpeg output, YouTube ingestion, or viewer playback. The manuals document logging and progress output, but do not define a universal RTMP log signature that proves packet loss.
Capture a useful, safe log
Increase verbosity for a reproduction
FFmpeg writes its default logs to stderr. Its logging options include verbose and debug; begin with verbose and use debug only if the first capture lacks context. The repeat, level, and time flags can make repeated messages and log timing easier to interpret. FFmpeg’s -report option saves the command line and log output in a timestamped report and implies debug verbosity. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation for the current option details.

ffmpeg -loglevel repeat+level+time+verbose -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY' 2>ffmpeg-live.log
This is an example of capturing logs and using RTMPS syntax, not a universal encoding recipe. Substitute your own input and output locally; do not publish a live stream key. Keep global options such as log verbosity before the input and output, and check FFmpeg’s documentation because option placement and scope matter. Avoid leaving verbose logging enabled for a whole event if log size or credential handling is not controlled.
Redact credentials before sharing
Reports can retain command-line details. Replace the stream key and redact other credentials from the command, logs, screenshots, and diagnostic bundles before sending them to anyone. RTMPS encrypts data to and through Google’s servers, according to YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; encryption does not make it safe to disclose the key itself.
Build a timeline across the stream
Use timestamps rather than interpreting an isolated warning. Record when YouTube first changes stream health, when FFmpeg logs a warning, error, stall, or output-rate change, and whether CPU load or the local archive changes at the same time. The exact FFmpeg message depends on its build, protocol implementation, and the failure mode; there is no single documented message that universally means “RTMP packet loss.”

Compare these observations rather than treating any one as a complete diagnosis:
| Evidence source | What it can show | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg verbose/debug log and progress output | FFmpeg messages, encoding progress, and timing context | A direct count or location of IP packet loss |
| YouTube Live Control Room stream health | Ingestion status and platform-provided errors or instructions | The exact local network segment at fault |
| Encoder preview, CPU observations, and local archive | Source quality, local encoding pressure, and whether a local recording is intact | Whether the outbound route drops packets |
| Upload test, host TCP/interface counters, or packet capture | Upload capacity under test conditions or network evidence at the measured host/path | What happened outside the measurement point and time window |
Check the local source and encoder first
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder’s direct view, source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive. If the preview and archive are also faulty, or an encoder error or high CPU load coincides with the symptom, investigate the source and encoding pipeline before blaming the network.
If the local output appears healthy while Live Control Room reports trouble, move on to outbound bandwidth and network reliability checks. That prioritizes the next investigation; it does not prove that the ISP is responsible.

Compare YouTube’s health messages with FFmpeg
Live Control Room reports stream status and specific errors. Note the exact message and its time, then compare it with the FFmpeg timeline and local observations. YouTube’s encoder settings and connection guidance describes “failed to connect to server — connection timed out” and an invalid SSL certificate as connection setup or SSL-configuration problems. These messages are not direct readings of packet loss.
- For a timeout, check the destination URL, port, network reachability, and encoder configuration alongside the time of the failure.
- For an SSL error, verify that the destination URL is actually RTMPS and that the encoder supports the configured protocol.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS. If connection errors persist, preserve the redacted log and compare the control-room message with host and network evidence.
Check bitrate against available upload capacity
YouTube’s streaming tips state: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” The page recommends leaving 20% headroom and counting both primary and backup streams in the total. This is an operational margin recommended by YouTube Help; the page does not state a publication year. It is not a guarantee against temporary congestion or packet loss. Upload capacity may also be lower than download capacity.
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings page for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually stream. Its recommendations vary by configuration; the page covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1, with up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not exceeding four seconds. Platform guidance can change, so verify the current table rather than transferring a bitrate recommendation from a different configuration.

Test the network path without overclaiming
- Measure during representative conditions. Run an outbound speed test while the stream is operating or under conditions similar to the event. Compare the result with aggregate stream bitrate, including a backup output. A speed test describes its own test conditions; it cannot guarantee the path will remain clear throughout the stream.
- Compare wired and wireless locally, if possible. Switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet can help isolate whether the local wireless segment contributes to the problem. Treat this as a controlled comparison, not a packet-loss measurement or proof that the ISP or YouTube route is at fault.
- Collect direct network evidence if needed. During a reproduction, capture host interface/TCP statistics or a packet capture when you have access to the sending computer and network. Record the measurement point and time window. Such evidence applies to what that point observed, not automatically to every segment of the end-to-end route.
YouTube’s capacity guidance is available at YouTube Help: encoder settings and streaming tips. FFmpeg’s official references for logging options, progress statistics, and RTMP protocols explain what the application log and progress output represent.

FFmpeg progress slows or output rate falls
Check CPU load, encoder errors, the direct encoder view, and the local archive. If the local pipeline is healthy, compare the output timeline with YouTube stream health and check available upload against the total bitrate. A lower-than-target rate alone does not establish packet loss.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYouTube reports stream trouble, but the local recording looks good
Check outbound capacity and network reliability, then collect host-level counters or a capture during the issue if you need direct evidence. This pattern makes the outbound path a sensible next area to investigate, but does not pinpoint the ISP, route, or ingestion server.

Connection times out or SSL setup fails
Check the server URL, port, RTMP/RTMPS selection, and encoder support. An invalid SSL certificate or timeout concerns connection setup/configuration; neither is itself a packet-loss measurement.
Only viewers report buffering
Viewer buffering describes playback at the viewer’s end. Compare it with Live Control Room, the encoder output, and your own network measurements; do not infer that the sender lost packets from buffering alone.
