To diagnose cracking, popping, crackling, or static from an iPhone, first note whether it happens with alerts, locally played audio, calls, Voice Memos, or camera recordings. Then compare the speaker and microphone checks below. These patterns can narrow down the source, but the sound alone cannot confirm that a particular part has failed.
First, pinpoint when the sound occurs
Test at a moderate volume and note whether the noise is continuous or intermittent. Check the contexts separately rather than assuming every distorted sound comes from the speaker.

- Alerts: Does the noise occur when an alert or ringtone plays?
- Local audio: Does music or video sound distorted when played on the iPhone?
- Calls: Does it happen at your ear, on speakerphone, or both?
- Recordings: Is it present in a Voice Memo or a video recorded with the camera?
A crackling iPhone speaker and a popping sound during calls may have different causes. The comparisons below help isolate the context; none is, by itself, proof of a hardware fault.
Check the speaker and receiver
For distorted ringtone, alert, or playback sound, Apple recommends checking settings and openings before seeking service. Follow these steps:

- Check your phone model: Before you order, please confirm your phone model to find out which product is right for you
- Turn off Silent mode and Do Not Disturb or other Focus modes.
- Remove the case and any screen protector that might cover an opening.
- Inspect the speaker opening and, on iPhone models with one, the receiver opening for visible blockage or debris.
- If an opening looks dirty or obstructed, gently brush it with a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Do not poke into the opening or apply liquid.
- Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and move the Ringtone and Alerts slider back and forth to test playback. If the speaker control on the slider is dimmed, or you hear no sound, Apple says the speaker may need service.
If you can hear sound from the speaker, Apple suggests making a call and turning on speakerphone. If crackling or static continues during a speakerphone call, the call itself may be affected by network or reception conditions; try again later or from another location. Apple’s speaker troubleshooting steps cover these checks.
Test microphone recordings and app permissions
If callers say your voice is unclear, or recordings sound distorted, test the microphones separately. Remove the case or screen protector and check the microphone openings for debris. Apple’s recording checks are useful for comparing functions, but they do not diagnose a specific failed component.

- Voice Memo: Record yourself speaking toward the bottom of the iPhone, then play it back.
- Camera videos: Record a video while speaking toward the top of the iPhone. Switch camera selection, record another video, and compare the playback.
- One app only: If the microphone problem occurs in just one app, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and check that the app is enabled.

Compare the same call through the receiver and on speakerphone. If the crackling or static is limited to calls—especially if it changes with location or time—network or reception may be involved. Apple recommends trying later or from another location; a call-only symptom does not establish that the iPhone speaker or microphone has failed.

If the iPhone was recently exposed to liquid
Water in a speaker or microphone can reduce sound performance until it evaporates. Disconnect cables and do not charge by cable or connect an accessory until the iPhone is completely dry. Apple’s liquid-exposure guidance specifies waiting at least five hours before cable charging or connecting an accessory.
- Place the iPhone speaker-side down on a lint-free cloth and check whether water drips out.
- Do not use cleaning products or compressed air, and keep moisture out of openings.
- If liquid may have entered the device or the sound problem persists, contact an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

When to seek service
Arrange an Apple or Apple Authorized Service Provider assessment if distortion remains after the safe checks, if the Ringtone and Alerts speaker control is dimmed, or if the microphone tests continue to sound unclear. These symptoms warrant assessment, not a remote diagnosis of a particular speaker, microphone, or other internal component.
