First identify what is slow, when it happens, and whether it affects one VM or several. Then compare host and guest behavior, check storage and virtual-disk configuration, and change one relevant setting at a time. This approach helps distinguish CPU contention, memory pressure, storage waits, and network or graphics problems before you risk an unnecessary change.
What does “slow” mean in this VM?
Turn the complaint into a repeatable symptom before changing anything. “Slow” might mean long boot times, sluggish application response, delayed disk operations, poor network transfers, desktop rendering lag, or a workload that takes longer than expected. Those symptoms point to different parts of the system.

Is the problem limited to one VM or shared across the host?
Compare the guest’s CPU and memory behavior with host activity during the same time window. Check whether the host is busy, whether the guest appears to be waiting on disk, and whether memory pressure or swapping is present. CPU, RAM, swapping, and disk I/O are separate candidate causes; a VM can feel slow while waiting on storage even if CPU use is not the main problem.
- Several VMs slow down together: investigate shared host capacity and common storage or network paths first.
- One VM is affected: examine its workload, guest OS, virtual hardware, and resource allocation before changing host-wide settings.
- The guest reports high iowait: treat it as a clue to investigate I/O, not proof that CPU steal or a particular disk cache mode is responsible.
These are diagnostic priorities, not universal thresholds. The cited Proxmox material does not establish a single CPU, memory, or I/O number at which every host becomes a bottleneck.
Is storage slowing the workload?
Check the storage path while the affected workload is running. Identify the backend and whether the problem appears during reads, writes, random I/O, sustained activity, or only on a particular VM. Compare host-side observations with a carefully controlled guest-level test when appropriate; keep the workload and conditions consistent so the comparison is useful.

Proxmox VE’s Administration Guide describes pveperf as a “very quick and general benchmark” and recommends more detailed tests, especially for I/O performance. Use it as an overview, not as proof that a storage change will improve the workload that matters to you.
Do not change disk cache mode just because a report mentions iowait or steal. The appropriate choice depends on the host and storage backend, and the cited guidance does not support a blanket setting for all configurations.
Are the virtual disk and guest drivers configured appropriately?
Check the guest’s support for VirtIO and review how its virtual disk is presented. Proxmox’s migration guidance recommends SCSI disks with the VirtIO SCSI single controller where the guest supports VirtIO. It also describes discard for thin-provisioned storage and IO threads as options for disk I/O handling. Confirm that the storage backend supports the option you intend to use.

Before changing a boot-disk interface
Verify that the correct VirtIO driver is installed and available early enough in the boot process. Windows needs the driver installed before switching its boot disk to VirtIO; Linux may need the driver included in initramfs. An interface change without the necessary boot-time driver can leave the guest unable to start. Plan a safe maintenance window when needed and preserve the original configuration so you can revert.

In a Proxmox Support Forum reply dated December 9, 2024, staff member Fiona recommended enabling the iothread option for VM disks, explaining that otherwise I/O load is handled by QEMU’s main thread and can cause virtual CPUs to get stuck. Check that the disk and controller setup supports the option, then compare the same workload before and after the change. The forum advice is a candidate to test, not a promise of improvement for every VM.
Check guest integration
Proxmox recommends the QEMU guest agent for improved communication with the guest. It is an integration measure to consider when reviewing the VM setup, not evidence by itself that the agent is the cause of a performance problem.

Could CPU or memory pressure be the cause?
Look for host contention and memory pressure before increasing a VM’s allocation. Confirm whether the host has capacity left for its own work and I/O, and whether the guest or host is swapping. Giving a VM more resources is not automatically helpful if the host is already constrained.
The cited sources do not establish a universal vCPU ratio or support CPU type host, CPU pinning, or particular scheduling settings as general fixes. Consider such changes only when a workload-specific reason exists and you have guidance for the installed Proxmox VE version.
Is it actually a network or graphics problem?
Slow transfers
Separate transfer direction and workload, then compare guest behavior with the host and network path. This helps distinguish a VM-specific issue from a problem on a shared path. The cited material does not establish a particular network interface or product as the right fix.

Laggy desktop or video
If applications and other guest work remain responsive but desktop rendering or video is slow, investigate the graphics path as a separate problem. The cited material is not sufficient to prescribe passthrough or another graphics configuration.
When is a storage upgrade justified?
Consider hardware only after measurements identify storage as the limiting part of the workload. Proxmox VE’s Administration Guide recommends fast, redundant storage, says the best results are achieved with SSDs, and recommends SSDs with power-loss protection for VM storage. These are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that an SSD will fix a particular VM. A storage replacement cannot resolve CPU oversubscription, guest memory pressure, or a network or display issue.
How do you verify a fix safely?
- Save the starting point. Record the VM configuration and the workload measurements you will compare.
- Choose one change that matches the evidence. For example, investigate a supported disk option when storage behavior points to I/O, rather than changing unrelated CPU or cache settings.
- Repeat the same workload under comparable conditions. Compare the symptom that prompted the change, not just a general benchmark result.
- Keep the change only if it helps without creating instability or compatibility problems. Otherwise, revert to the recorded configuration and continue investigating a different likely bottleneck.
Confirm configuration details against documentation for the Proxmox VE and guest versions you run. The available Administration Guide and wiki material does not establish a version-specific setting recommendation here, and no performance gain should be assumed without a controlled comparison on the affected workload.
