A warm case is normal for many fanless PCs: the chassis helps release heat, and passive cooling depends on natural airflow rather than an internal fan. Investigate when you see symptoms such as sustained performance loss, processor throttling, thermal warnings, or unexpected shutdowns. Check the exact model’s limits and installation guidance before changing placement or attempting to clean or service it.
What counts as overheating in a fanless PC?
Touch alone is not a reliable test. A case designed to dissipate heat can feel warm during normal use; the relevant question is whether the computer is operating outside its model-specific limits or behaving abnormally.

Intel lists automatic shutdown after a short period, lower-than-expected reported CPU frequency, evidence of throttling, and general slowness as possible overheating symptoms. Its guidance concerns boxed Intel processors in DIY systems; for a finished OEM computer, Intel directs owners to the computer manufacturer. These symptoms call for investigation, but do not identify a particular failed component. Intel’s overheating troubleshooting guidance was last reviewed December 17, 2025.

Diagnose it safely, one check at a time
1. Record the symptom and workload
Separate a warm enclosure from a warning, unexpected shutdown, sustained slowdown, or suspected throttling. Note which applications were running, how long the computer had been working, and whether the problem occurs only during demanding or extended tasks.

For a useful comparison, repeat the same workload after each permitted change. Keep the workload, room conditions, placement, and monitoring method as similar as possible. Do not treat an isolated temperature reading as proof of a fault unless you can compare it with guidance for the exact model and processor. Intel cautions users to use temperature software validated for their processor.
2. Find the exact model’s operating conditions
Look up the full PC model number and consult its manual or official support page. Check the stated ambient operating range, approved orientation, required clearance, heat-dissipating surfaces or openings, cleaning instructions, and service or warranty restrictions. Those details vary by device.

ASUS / ROG’s support page, last updated September 8, 2026, states an ambient range of 5°C to 35°C for products covered by that guidance, which includes MiniPCs. That range is not a universal limit for fanless computers; verify the manual for your specific model. ASUS / ROG’s temperature and cleaning guidance also notes product-specific exceptions.

3. Restore the intended heat-dissipation path
Check that the PC is installed in the orientation and with the clearance specified by its maker. If the manual allows it, move it away from enclosed or crowded spaces and keep the case, fins, and designed openings unobstructed. Do not reposition or open a sealed mini PC based on advice intended for a different design.
For compatible DIY passive systems, Noctua describes a natural-convection path that admits cooler air lower in the case and lets warmer air escape higher up, with room above the cooler. Openings and internal components can obstruct that flow. Noctua’s NH-P1 guidance assumes an ambient temperature of 22°C and says performance will be worse at higher ambient temperatures. These recommendations apply to compatible DIY builds, not every fanless PC. Noctua’s NH-P1 setup guidelines explain the assumptions and compatibility requirements.

As a diagnostic comparison, you can reduce unnecessary sustained workload and see whether the symptom changes. That may help show when the issue occurs, but it does not establish that the computer has been repaired.

Inspect external openings for visible dust or obstruction, then follow the exact product manual. ASUS’s guidance says to turn off and unplug the device before cleaning. For certain vented products, it recommends canned compressed air held at a distance, and warns against compressors or other powerful airflow devices. The method does not apply to some passive devices without a fan or exhaust vent.

Do not assume that opening a sealed unit, removing a heat spreader, replacing thermal paste or pads, or adding a fan is safe or supported. Use those procedures only if the manufacturer documents them for your model or a qualified service provider confirms the appropriate repair.
5. Escalate symptoms that persist
If throttling, warnings, or shutdowns continue after model-approved placement and environmental checks, contact the PC maker or an authorized service provider. Have the model number, workload, ambient-temperature reading, symptom timing, and any recent changes ready. Intel specifically advises OEM-computer owners to contact their computer manufacturer; its DIY thermal-solution instructions are not a general repair procedure for finished fanless PCs.

A passive CPU cooler can be an option for a DIY desktop, but a cooler must match the processor and motherboard and work with the case’s orientation, clearances, and convection path. Noctua’s NH-P1 is one example for compatible builds, not a universal replacement part for an unspecified fanless mini PC. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information and the whole system design before choosing components.
Passive designs may operate near thermal limits and throttle automatically. Assess sustained performance against the components’ specifications rather than assuming that any high temperature means damage. When comparing compatible passive-cooling options, consider processor and motherboard compatibility, sustained workload and power behavior, ambient operating range, case material and orientation, required clearances, convection path, and supported service procedures.
