Playwright Test can do this locally with toHaveScreenshot(); Percy adds a hosted review workflow. A screenshot diff shows that rendered pixels changed—it does not determine whether the change is a bug.
What screenshot comparison can—and cannot—detect
Screenshot comparison is a form of visual regression testing. It compares a new capture with an expected image and highlights differences such as a shifted layout, changed color, missing element, or altered text rendering. The comparison covers the pixels in that particular capture state, not every behavior or property of the site.
A matching screenshot does not prove that the page works, that its text is correct, or that it is accessible. Pair visual checks with functional tests and, where relevant, text and accessibility checks. Playwright documents those as separate testing approaches: screenshot comparisons.
How to set up visual regression testing with Playwright
1. Choose representative pages and states
Start with a manageable set of pages or components whose appearance matters. Include important interaction states—for example, a navigation menu while open, a checkout summary, or a responsive layout at a defined viewport. Fix test data and authentication state where needed so that each run visits the same meaningful state.

Decide what the screenshot should cover: the current viewport, a selected clip, or the full scrollable page. Playwright’s screenshot assertion supports full-page capture and clipping; see the PageAssertions API.
2. Capture and approve the initial baseline
In a Playwright Test project, use toHaveScreenshot(). On its first run, the assertion creates a reference image; later runs compare their captures with that reference.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});
Inspect the image produced on the first run and approve it as the expected appearance. When an assertion later fails, inspect the expected image, actual image, and diff before deciding whether to update the baseline. For an intentional UI change, update snapshots with npx playwright test --update-snapshots, review the changed references, and commit them with the related code change. Playwright’s snapshot guide describes this workflow.
3. Keep the capture state repeatable
Visual output can vary with the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where possible; otherwise, environment differences can appear as false alarms. Playwright explains these factors in its visual comparisons guide.

Wait for the content and data that matter to the test, and use a consistent viewport and capture scope. For pages with irrelevant movement or changing content, Playwright offers screenshot controls including animation handling, locator masks, full-page capture, and a stylesheet for hiding dynamic elements. Its screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing. Consult the version of the API installed in your project because API details can change.
Hide or mask only genuinely volatile content, such as a timestamp that is unrelated to the layout under test. Do not suppress the area whose regressions you want to catch.
4. Set comparison sensitivity deliberately
Playwright provides a perceived color threshold and limits such as maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio. A strict comparison may report harmless rendering noise; a permissive one may miss a meaningful defect. There is no universal threshold: begin with settings suited to your project, inspect diffs, and calibrate against changes you know are harmless and changes that should fail. Playwright’s documentation includes maxDiffPixels: 100 as an example, not as a generally recommended value. See the guide and API reference.
How to review a screenshot difference
- Confirm the capture is comparable. Check the URL, viewport, browser and operating-system environment, test data, authentication, and page state.
- Inspect the actual and expected images. Determine whether the difference is a real UI change, an intentional update, or instability in the capture.
- Fix the cause or approve the change. If the page is unstable, make its data or timing repeatable. If the design change is intended, update the reference only after review.
- Keep the reviewed baseline with the code. This makes the new expected appearance part of the same change history as the implementation.
A diff is a signal for review, not an automatic verdict about product quality.

Local Playwright checks or hosted visual review?
For a local, repository-managed assertion, use Playwright. For a shared hosted review workflow, Percy is one documented option. The choice is about workflow, not a claim that one approach catches every visual defect.
| Workflow | How comparison and review work | Merge behavior | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright screenshot assertions | Compares captures with stored references managed alongside the test project. | A changed screenshot fails the assertion. | Teams wanting local assertions and repository-managed expectations. |
| Percy hosted visual testing | Captures screenshots, highlights changes against approved baselines, and presents them for review. BrowserStack describes coverage across browsers and responsive widths. | Changes can await review without failing a Percy run unless the pipeline is configured to fail on unapproved changes. | Teams wanting hosted collaboration and visual review integrated into CI. |
These are workflow distinctions, not a comparison of current prices or plan limits. See BrowserStack’s Percy overview and its Percy and Playwright guide for the described workflows.

The test fails even though nobody changed the design
First check whether the baseline and current run use the same operating system, browser version, settings, headless mode, viewport, and page data. Rendering differences across environments can change pixels. Then look for animations, timestamps, rotating content, or other volatile elements; stabilize, hide, or mask only the parts that are irrelevant to the test.
The baseline changes on every run
The page may not have reached a stable state, or it may include dynamic content. Wait for the meaningful content to load, make test data deterministic, and use Playwright’s animation and masking options or a stylesheet for irrelevant dynamic elements. The assertion’s matching-screenshot wait can help with settling, but it does not make changing inputs deterministic.
A small rendering difference creates a large diff
Confirm that capture environments and page state match before changing thresholds. If the discrepancy is benign, tune the perceived color threshold or maximum-difference setting for the project and review future diffs carefully; do not copy an example value as a universal setting.

An intentional redesign keeps failing the test
Review the actual and expected screenshots, then update the snapshots with npx playwright test --update-snapshots only when the new appearance is approved. Commit the reviewed baseline with the implementation change.
A hosted visual run does not block a merge
In a Percy workflow, review and approval are distinct from whether the CI job fails. Configure an explicit wait or fail step if unapproved visual changes must block a merge; consult the Percy/Playwright integration guide for its pipeline workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does screenshot comparison detect functional bugs?
Not by itself. It detects pixel differences in a captured state; use functional tests for behavior and separate text or accessibility checks where needed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I compare screenshots captured on different operating systems?
You can, but operating-system and rendering differences may create noise. Playwright recommends creating and comparing baselines in the same environment.
Should I use full-page screenshots for every test?
No. Choose viewport, clipped, or full-page capture based on the area and behavior the test is intended to cover.
