Use a layered, evidence-led investigation: verify the appliance’s firmware against a trusted vendor reference, inspect its files and persistence, and compare its logs and network traffic with what the device should normally do. No single scan, symptom, or matching firmware hash proves an appliance is clean. Preserve evidence before rebooting or resetting it if compromise is plausible.
How do I detect Linux malware that disguises itself as a network appliance?
Start by establishing what the device is supposed to be and do, then look for inconsistencies across firmware, runtime state, logs, and network behavior. A router or other appliance can appear to function normally while being used for persistence, a backdoor, or a pivot into other networks. In a September 27, 2023 advisory summary, the NSA described BlackTech actors hiding in router firmware and blending malicious activity into normal operations to evade endpoint detection tools. Read the NSA summary.

Investigate indicators as leads, not verdicts. Heat, slow or disrupted connectivity, unfamiliar configuration changes, and unusual traffic can all warrant checking, but hardware faults or legitimate administration can produce similar signs. There is no universal signature or one-step check that clears every appliance.

What should you record before checking the device?
Build a reference for the appliance and its normal role before making changes. This gives you a basis for distinguishing an unexpected service or connection from ordinary device behavior.

Use the vendor’s official channel for reference firmware and hashes where available. CISA’s 2025 advisory recommends checking that the firmware version is expected and verifying its hash against vendor values. See CISA’s advisory.
How do you check firmware and runtime integrity?
Compare the installed firmware with a trusted reference
Use the manufacturer’s documented procedure to compare the installed image with a known-good vendor image or checksum. A mismatch is a reason to investigate; it may reflect a legitimate update, an incorrect reference, or tampering. Confirm the model and hardware revision match the reference before drawing conclusions.
Use integrity features when the appliance supports them
Some platforms provide signed-image enforcement, runtime memory validation, integrity checkpoints, or alerts during boot or operation. Check the model’s documentation and enable supported validation features according to the vendor’s instructions. Availability and procedures vary by appliance.

A matching hash only speaks to the image that was checked against the reference. It does not rule out runtime compromise, other persistence mechanisms, or a reference baseline that an attacker has altered. Hash and runtime checks are useful evidence, not a complete clearance test.
Which files, processes, and persistence should you examine?
Compare the current state with a trusted baseline for that model and firmware. Look beyond familiar malware filenames: an unexpected change to a service, account, module, or startup setting may matter even if no obvious malicious file appears.
- Files and executables, including renamed or hidden items.
- Running processes, services, scheduled tasks, startup configuration, and administrative accounts.
- Loaded modules, logging settings, and components that restart after termination.
Include kernel-level components in the investigation where the platform allows it. The FBI’s 2020 summary of the Drovorub advisory describes Linux malware combining an implant with a kernel-module rootkit, alongside capabilities such as file movement, arbitrary command execution, port forwarding, command-and-control, and stealth. Read the FBI’s Drovorub summary.

Do not treat a clean result from one endpoint detection tool as proof of absence. The NSA’s BlackTech summary describes activity designed to blend into normal operations and evade EDR.
How can logs and network traffic reveal an appliance compromise?
Correlate records rather than interpreting one alert in isolation. Preserve device, host, firewall, DNS, authentication, and flow logs when available, then compare them with the appliance’s historical baseline and expected role. CISA recommends retaining network-device and host logs, establishing normal traffic baselines, and tuning detection for anomalous binaries, lateral movement, and persistence. See CISA’s logging and detection guidance.
Review unexplained outbound connections, management access, listening services, data transfers, traffic-volume changes, port forwarding, and scanning. Ask whether the device appears to be relaying traffic for an unknown party or contacting command-and-control infrastructure.

The FBI’s May 2025 advisory excerpt on TheMoon describes compromised routers scanning for other vulnerable devices and contacting command-and-control infrastructure. Its 2018 VPNFilter advisory notes that encryption and networks that misattribute traffic complicated analysis, so an unfamiliar or encrypted connection may need context from other records rather than a snap judgment. Read the FBI’s TheMoon advisory and the FBI’s VPNFilter advisory.

Check whether remote administration or exposed management interfaces are enabled, whether the device is still receiving security support, and whether similar appliances show the same changes or traffic patterns. An end-of-life appliance no longer receives ongoing security support; plan to replace it when feasible, and apply available firmware and security updates to supported devices. Disable remote administration when it is not needed.

Look for patterns across branch or home-office devices, not just the appliance that first raised concern. The NSA’s BlackTech summary describes compromised branch routers used to conceal configuration changes, disable logging, establish firmware backdoors, and pivot between networks. A shared firmware version, log gap, or unexplained traffic pattern across sister devices can help scope the incident.

How should you compare appliances or monitoring approaches?
When selecting equipment or deciding how to monitor an existing fleet, compare capabilities that affect investigation and response. These are assessment criteria, not a ranking of products.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Firmware provenance | Can you obtain vendor-known-good hashes or signed images for the exact model and hardware revision? CISA recommends version and hash verification where vendor values are available. |
| Support lifecycle and updates | Is the appliance still supported, and can security updates be applied? End-of-life devices lack ongoing security support. |
| Runtime integrity | Does the platform support signed-image enforcement, runtime validation, integrity checkpoints, or verification alerts? |
| Logging | Can logs be retained securely and exported for correlation with host, firewall, DNS, authentication, and flow records? CISA recommends retaining device and host logs. |
| Network visibility | Can you establish normal traffic and detect deviations such as unexpected connections, scanning, or lateral movement? |
| Management and containment | Can management access be restricted, and can the appliance be isolated without creating an unacceptable service or safety impact? |
What should you do if compromise is plausible?
Follow your organization’s incident-response process. For a critical infrastructure or enterprise device, involve the manufacturer or a qualified incident-response team; the reviewed advisories do not establish a universal cleanup method for every model.
- Preserve evidence. Where feasible, save logs and document the device state before rebooting, resetting, or changing configuration.
- Contain with care. Restrict access or isolate the appliance in a way that preserves needed evidence and accounts for business continuity.
- Restore from a trusted source. Use the vendor’s instructions to verify and reinstall trusted firmware. Patch supported equipment.
- Protect credentials and access. Rotate credentials that may have been used to administer the device or passed through it, and disable remote management if it is unnecessary.
- Replace unsupported equipment when practical. The FBI’s TheMoon guidance recommends firmware updates and replacing end-of-life routers; its VPNFilter guidance also recommends remote-management controls and firmware updates.
A reboot may interrupt activity, but it does not establish that firmware or rootkit persistence has been removed.
