How to Detect Browser-Based Attacks When Endpoint Telemetry Misses Them

When endpoint telemetry looks normal, investigate browser extensions, configuration changes, process access, web alerts, and suspicious authenticated sessions together.

When endpoint alerts look normal, look for evidence in the browser and correlate it with endpoint, network, and identity activity. Start by inventorying extensions and detecting changes; then investigate suspicious browser writes, process access, outbound connections, and authenticated-session use. No single endpoint agent or URL block provides complete visibility into browser-resident activity.

Why endpoint telemetry can leave a browser blind spot

A browser can be used to access sensitive information and authenticated services while activity looks like ordinary web use to some endpoint or network controls. Extensions are especially important: they can inherit browser permissions and access information a user enters or views. A malicious extension may persist and blend in with normal browsing.

MITRE ATT&CK documents several ways extensions can be introduced, including browser stores, manual loading, and tampering with Chromium configuration files. A familiar name or marketplace listing is not proof that an extension is safe: malicious add-ons may masquerade as legitimate ones, and store scanning may not catch them. MITRE ATT&CK T1176.001, version 1.1, covers Linux, Windows, and macOS and was last modified September 22, 2025.

Session theft presents a different visibility problem. Browser compromise can let an attacker inherit cookies, HTTP sessions, or client certificates, potentially allowing access to services without a fresh sign-in that looks obviously suspicious. MITRE ATT&CK describes this behavior under T1185, Browser Session Hijacking.

What to monitor: a browser-aware evidence map

Evidence source Useful for What it does not establish by itself
Extension inventory and browser policy Finding unapproved, newly added, changed, or reappearing extensions and comparing them with an approved baseline. Whether an extension actually performed malicious activity.
Endpoint process and file events Correlating extension changes with browser configuration writes, suspicious file activity, unusual child processes, or access to browser processes. That every browser action or extension behavior is visible in the endpoint product.
Network and web-protection alerts Adding destination, device, application, and response context to a suspicious connection or attempted request. Whether an extension, injected code, or the user initiated the request.
Identity activity Investigating unusual use of authenticated sessions alongside suspected browser compromise. A universal event schema: available fields depend on the organization’s identity provider.
Browser isolation Reducing exposure by placing a barrier between web content and the local operating system. Detection of every attack, including misuse of authorized browser capabilities or stolen sessions.

How to build a detection workflow

  1. Establish an inventory. Collect installed extensions for every managed device and browser. Record identifiers, names, versions, install source when available, permissions, update behavior, and approval status. Compare observed state with an allowlist or browser-management policy; flag additions, changes, and extensions that return after removal.
  2. Correlate changes with behavior. For a new or modified extension, check nearby file writes, changes to browser preferences or secure preferences, unusual browser child-process activity, and outbound connections to untrusted destinations. Raise priority when multiple signals occur in a coherent sequence rather than alerting on a single weak indicator.
  3. Investigate suspicious browser process access. Look for abnormal high-integrity or special-privilege access, suspicious handle access, remote-thread activity, or other injection behavior involving browser processes. These are hunting leads, not guaranteed turnkey detections; validate analytic patterns against the telemetry your environment actually collects.
  4. Follow suspicious sessions into identity logs. If browser compromise or session theft is plausible, investigate unusual session use and account activity with the identity team. The exact fields and pivots depend on the identity provider; the MITRE description establishes the session-theft behavior, not a common schema shared by all providers.
  5. Add destination and response context. For relevant web-threat alerts, review the user or device, application, URL or domain, related alerts, and whether the request was blocked or only detected. Treat this as supporting context for the browser investigation, not attribution of the request to a particular extension or user action.
  6. Contain and preserve evidence. Follow your incident-response process for isolating affected devices or accounts, preserving relevant browser, endpoint, network, and identity records, and removing unauthorized extensions. Avoid treating a successful extension removal as proof that any affected sessions or accounts are safe.

How to make extension changes detectable

Use a baseline, not just a list of known-bad add-ons

Maintain an approved-extension policy and compare it with observed state. Alert on unexpected installation, permission or version changes, policy deviations, and reappearance after removal. MITRE recommends auditing extensions and applying allow or deny controls as appropriate. A baseline can reveal an unfamiliar or altered extension even when no reputation service has already labeled it malicious.

Look for combinations of signals

Build detections around sequences such as an extension appearing shortly before browser configuration changes and an unusual outbound connection, or suspicious access to a browser process followed by use of an authenticated service. Tune these patterns against local false positives and available event detail; a missing event may reflect a collection gap rather than benign activity.

  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Use product examples without assuming universal coverage

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint documents an API for known installed browser extensions with per-device details. Availability depends on the relevant Defender capability and current licensing. Other environments need an equivalent inventory from browser management or endpoint tooling. Microsoft also documents web-protection alerts and investigation details for Defender for Endpoint Plan 1 and Plan 2 in its referenced documentation; verify current SKU behavior and configuration before relying on a specific feature.

What web protection can and cannot tell you

Web protection alerts can identify a URL or domain, the device and application involved, related alerts, and whether a request was blocked or detected. Microsoft documents Defender for Endpoint web-protection alerts generated through network protection in block or audit mode. These records can reveal a destination or attempted connection even when they do not show the browser-resident cause.

Use an alert as a pivot: compare its time and device with extension changes, browser process activity, and identity use. A blocked request is evidence that a control responded to that request; it does not establish that no other browser activity occurred.

Which controls close which gaps?

Control Primary contribution Key limitation to plan for
Extension inventory and policy Visibility into installed extensions and enforcement of approved or denied software. Coverage depends on browser, operating system, management tooling, and collection configuration.
Endpoint behavior monitoring Context for file changes, process activity, browser-process access, and related device events. May not expose every browser-level action or provide extension-specific detail.
Web protection Destination and response context for network-related threats. Does not, by itself, identify whether an extension, injected code, or user navigation caused a request.
Identity monitoring Investigation of account and session activity associated with possible browser compromise. Event coverage and fields vary by identity provider.
Browser isolation A risk-reduction barrier between web content and the local operating system. Not a replacement for extension, browser, or identity monitoring.

When assessing products or controls, compare supported browsers and operating systems, extension inventory and runtime visibility, whether the control detects, blocks, or isolates, its ability to correlate endpoint, network, and identity events, subscription requirements, and operational overhead. The sources cited here establish control categories but do not provide a current apples-to-apples product benchmark.

Reduce exposure while improving detection

  • Restrict extension installation to approved sources and enforce allow or deny policies.
  • Remove extensions that are not needed, and keep browsers updated.
  • Audit extension state regularly and investigate unexpected changes instead of relying only on user recognition or marketplace reputation.
  • Assess browser isolation for high-risk browsing. CISA’s 2023 guide, written for federal agencies, describes isolation as a logical barrier between the browser and operating system; remote isolation moves processing into a separate virtualized or cloud-hosted environment. CISA also cautions that extensions such as ad blockers can hold broad privileges over traffic and data.

Isolation reduces exposure to some web-delivered threats, but it does not remove the need to monitor browser state and identity activity. Browser and identity telemetry vary by browser, operating system, management platform, and security subscription, so confirm what your environment actually records before treating an absent signal as proof that an event did not happen.
