Detect lateral movement by correlating endpoint, identity, and network activity against the access your organization expects. Stop it by reducing unnecessary paths between systems, investigating anomalous access, and containing the affected device or identity with the narrowest action that will work without disrupting essential services.
What is lateral movement?
CISA defines lateral movement as “the process of pivoting from host to host or from one user account to another to reposition, supplement, or spread the active foothold.” In practice, an attacker who has gained access to one computer or account may use it to reach other systems, accounts, or applications.

A single unusual connection or sign-in is an investigation lead, not proof of an intrusion. Stronger detection comes from connecting activity across systems and identities, then checking whether it fits the organization’s normal access patterns.

How do I detect lateral movement in my network?
Build a picture of normal access first, then look for deviations across trust boundaries. The goal is to determine which identity or device initiated an action, what it reached, and whether that path is expected.

Map assets, identities, and expected paths
- Identify sensitive systems and group assets by business function or sensitivity.
- Document privileged accounts, service accounts, remote-access routes, administrative paths, and expected communication between segments.
- Record operational exceptions and the owners responsible for confirming them. Without this context, legitimate administration or service activity can resemble suspicious movement.
- Mark critical services and network infrastructure whose disruption could affect essential connectivity or operations.
Watch for activity that crosses boundaries
Pay particular attention to unexpected access between network segments, access to sensitive application environments, remote connections from endpoints, unusual account use, and privilege changes. Review both permitted and denied inter-segment traffic: allowed flows show what a device reached, while denied attempts can reveal probing or a path the attacker is trying to use.
What logs show lateral movement?
No single log source tells the whole story. Centralize relevant records so analysts can connect the initiating device, identity, destination, and time of activity.
| Telemetry | What to examine | How it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Endpoint | Process activity, logons, and network connections, especially unexpected remote connections. | Provides host-specific context about what ran and which connections the device made. CISA’s ransomware guidance notes that endpoint detection and response (EDR) can help identify lateral connections. |
| Identity | Sign-ins and audit events, privilege changes, unusual account use, and risky sign-ins. | Helps establish which account accessed a resource and whether the access fits its usual role. Microsoft’s Global Secure Access operations guidance discusses correlating identity signals with application and device context. |
| Network | Allowed and denied inter-segment traffic, flows to sensitive application segments, and traffic through gateways and other key intersections. | Shows movement across trust boundaries and helps identify which systems were reachable. CISA’s joint living-off-the-land guidance recommends monitoring inter-segment traffic and placing sensors at useful network intersections. |
Collect access and security-focused logs in a central location and retain them according to your investigation needs and applicable legal requirements. The cited guidance does not establish one retention period suitable for every organization.

How should I tune detections to normal activity?
Start with the organization’s expected behavior, including service identities, administrative work, and application use. Baseline regular access, review deviations with system owners, and adjust detection rules when legitimate activity repeatedly triggers them. Treat risk indicators as context to investigate, not an automatic verdict.
Microsoft’s Global Secure Access operations guide gives a product-specific example: flagging a user who accesses more than 10 distinct private application segments within 15 minutes. Microsoft recommends calculating a local baseline from recent activity and adjusting the threshold when ordinary usage is higher or lower. This is a starting example for that product environment, not a universal rule; validate it against the tenant’s schema, service identities, and expected use before relying on it.
Other leads include unusual access to sensitive applications, activity by a risky identity, or access from an unmanaged device. Microsoft advises validating these signals with application and device owners before treating activity as unauthorized.

How do I stop an attacker moving between computers?
Reduce unnecessary reachability
Separate resources by sensitivity or function, then limit communication between segments to flows required for business operations. The aim is to ensure that compromise of one host or credential exposes as few additional resources as practical. Review exceptions rather than allowing broad access to persist simply because it is convenient.
CISA’s joint living-off-the-land guidance recommends monitoring traffic between segments and positioning sensors at important intersections, including segment boundaries and gateways. It names Zeek for network metadata parsing and Snort and Suricata as examples of open-source network intrusion detection systems. These are examples, not endorsements, and a tool alone cannot identify every form of lateral movement.
Correlate before taking action
- Confirm the alert against endpoint, identity, and network evidence. Determine the likely scope, affected assets, and whether the activity matches an approved workflow.
- Identify linked accounts, devices, destinations, and recent privilege changes. Preserve the relevant telemetry so responders can investigate the activity and its reach.
- Choose a containment action based on the evidence and operational impact, using the narrowest effective option available.
Should I isolate a compromised device?
Isolation can limit further activity from a compromised endpoint, but the available actions and their effects depend on the platform and configuration. Consider whether the device is a server, an essential service, or part of network infrastructure before restricting its connectivity. Do not casually isolate infrastructure that provides essential network access.

Microsoft documents an endpoint isolation mode that disconnects an affected device while preserving a connection to its Defender service for monitoring. Supported platforms, selective-isolation options, VPN behavior, and enrollment requirements vary. Microsoft also documents containment actions involving devices, IP addresses, and users under specific conditions; some actions can affect network connectivity or trigger domain policy synchronization. Verify current product documentation and local procedures before using a product-specific action.
If broad isolation could interrupt a critical service, assess whether selective isolation or containment limited to critical assets is supported and effective in your environment. Preserve essential business and investigation channels where possible, and coordinate disruptive actions with the incident lead and service owner.
What should happen after containment?
Containment limits activity; it does not complete incident response. Follow the organization’s incident plan and applicable regulatory or contractual obligations.
- Restrict or disable compromised access as appropriate, then investigate adjacent systems and accounts for related activity.
- Preserve relevant logs and evidence for investigation. Determine how the attacker gained access and whether other hosts or identities were affected.
- Remove persistence and remediate the initial cause. Check whether abnormal movement has stopped before restoring access.
- Release restrictions under change control when it is safe to do so, and continue monitoring affected systems and identities.
NIST Special Publication 800-61 Revision 3 provides broader incident-response context for organizing response and recovery. MITRE ATT&CK maintains a taxonomy of the lateral-movement tactic and associated techniques; it can help teams describe observed behavior consistently.
How should I evaluate a lateral-movement defense?
Assess the combined monitoring and response capability rather than assuming that one product or alert threshold will solve the problem. Compare approaches on:
Quick Recap

- Visibility into privileged accounts, service identities, and critical assets.
- Containment options for servers and non-Windows endpoints, including their operational effects.
- Integration with existing logging, incident response, and network controls.
- False-positive handling and the ability to preserve critical services during containment.
