An “application update conflict” can mean three different things: an installed app rejects a new package, a dependency manager cannot find compatible package versions, or a server rejects changes made from stale app data. The fix depends on which layer failed. First capture the exact error and identify where it appeared; do not start by uninstalling the app, deleting data, or forcing a dependency version.
Identify what kind of update conflict you have
Note the affected app or project, its current and intended version, what action triggered the error, the full error text or code, the operating system, and the store or package manager involved. Then classify the failure:

| Where the failure happens | What may be conflicting | What to inspect first |
|---|---|---|
| Installing or updating an app | Package identity, signing or publisher, version direction, update ownership, or installer rules | The installed and incoming package identities, signatures, versions, and distribution source |
| Building a project or resolving dependencies | Two direct or transitive packages require incompatible versions of a shared dependency | The solver’s conflicting constraints and the direct dependencies that introduced them |
| Saving synchronized data | A client submits a change based on an older server record | The record’s current version and the application’s conflict-handling policy |
These are distinct problems, not interchangeable meanings of one universal error. The platform-specific rules below come from Android, Microsoft, Flutter, Android Studio, and AWS documentation; do not apply one ecosystem’s rules to another.

If an installed app will not update
Android: check application ID, signing, and version code
Android requires an incoming package to use the same application ID as the installed app. Its signing certificate must match the installed app’s certificate or have a valid proof of rotation, and its version code must be at least as high as the installed app’s. In some cases, the user must approve the update. These checks are described in Android’s app update guidance.

If more than one store distributes the app, the same application ID and signing keys can allow one store to update an installation that came from another. As a result, turning off updates in one store may not prevent an update from a different store. Android describes different application IDs or signing keys as ways to prevent cross-store updates when store versions need to remain separate. Android 14 also supports update ownership: if ownership is configured, another installer may encounter a pending user-approval state when attempting to update an app owned by a different store.
Protect app data before changing sources. Android’s guidance says that moving between stores when the existing and replacement apps do not share a compatible application ID and signing key requires uninstalling the existing app and reinstalling it; uninstalling deletes that app’s associated data. Back up or sync anything important before considering that route.

Windows MSIX: check package family and version direction
For an MSIX package, verify that the incoming package belongs to the same package family. Microsoft describes the family in terms of the package name and publisher. In the ordinary update path, the incoming version must be higher than the installed version. Windows supports explicit downgrade overrides in some deployment contexts, so installing a lower version is not an ordinary update. Architecture may differ where the operating system supports it, and transitions involving bundles have direction-specific rules.

An MSI update can run without replacing a particular existing file. Windows Installer applies component key-file versioning rules: it compares file version, date, and language when deciding whether to install or replace files. If the installer completed but a file stayed unchanged, inspect a verbose installer log for the file and component decisions rather than assuming the entire update failed. Microsoft also advises against concurrent or nested installations for shipping products; where several packages are needed, it recommends sequential installation through a setup application.

If a dependency update cannot be resolved
A dependency solver conflict usually means that two packages in the dependency tree require incompatible ranges for the same shared dependency. For example, one direct dependency might require a shared package in the 1.x range while another requires 2.x, leaving no version that satisfies both. Flutter’s Dart package documentation illustrates this kind of conflict.
- Find the shared dependency and constraints. Read the solver output for the package whose required version ranges cannot both be met.
- Trace each constraint to its parent. Follow the dependency explanation back to the direct packages that pulled in the conflicting requirements.
- Check for compatible releases. Flutter documents
flutter pub outdatedto show newer versions andflutter pub upgradeto upgrade within the constraints already in effect. A newer release of a direct dependency may allow a compatible shared version. - Handle major upgrades deliberately. Review breaking changes and adjust application code where needed. Android Studio’s dependency-upgrade guidance emphasizes assessing risk and testing: an upgrade can break an app unexpectedly.
- Verify the resolved project state. In Flutter/Dart application projects,
pubspec.lockrecords the exact resolved direct and transitive versions. Commit it so developers and build servers use the same resolution, then run the relevant build and integration tests.
A dependency override can force resolution without proving that the selected package works with every dependent package at runtime or at the API level. Treat it as a deliberate compatibility decision, not a general-purpose fix.

If synchronized changes conflict
A version-based optimistic concurrency check detects when a client submits a change based on an older version of a server record. In AWS AppSync’s documented behavior, the stale request is rejected and the latest server item is returned so the client can reconcile and retry with the current version. AWS lists three conflict-handling options: optimistic concurrency, Automerge, and a Lambda handler.
What AWS AppSync Automerge does
Automerge uses the data type to determine how to handle conflicts. Under the behavior described in AWS AppSync’s documentation:

- For conflicting scalar values, the server value is kept and the incoming scalar is rejected.
- For lists, incoming values are concatenated, including duplicates.
- Sets are combined without duplicates.
- New fields and null-valued fields can be merged.
- Map properties follow the same rules recursively.
These are AWS AppSync rules, not guarantees for every synchronization product. Check whether they preserve the meaning of your app’s data: concatenating a list may duplicate a logical event, while keeping the server’s scalar may discard a user’s intended edit.
Choose conflict behavior by data meaning
| Approach | What happens | What the app must consider |
|---|---|---|
| Optimistic concurrency in AWS AppSync | A stale write is rejected and the latest server item is returned. | The client reconciles the change and retries against the current version. |
| Automerge in AWS AppSync | The service applies its documented, data-type-dependent merge rules. | Test whether those rules preserve your application’s meaning for each field type. |
| Lambda handler in AWS AppSync | A custom handler can apply application-specific conflict logic. | Define and test the business rules for the races your app needs to handle. |
AWS describes these options but does not establish one as the best choice for every application. Use a custom handler when the correct outcome depends on domain rules that generic merge behavior cannot safely represent.
A safe workflow for resolving the conflict
- Capture the failure. Save the complete error message or code and record whether it occurs during installation, dependency resolution or build, or a synchronized data write.
- Record the context. Note the current and target versions, operating system, distribution source, package manager or installer, and relevant app or package identity.
- Apply the matching diagnostics. For an installation failure, check identity, signing or publisher, version direction, ownership, and architecture as applicable. For an MSI file that was not replaced, inspect the verbose installer log. For a dependency failure, trace incompatible constraints to their direct dependencies. For a stale write, fetch the current server record.
- Protect data and configuration. Before uninstalling or changing distribution sources, confirm that important app data is backed up or synced. Before overriding a dependency, establish that the forced version is compatible.
- Make the smallest justified change. Update the package or dependency that introduces the conflict, use an appropriate installer path, or reconcile data according to the app’s field-level rules. Do not treat a downgrade, uninstall, broad override, or automatic merge as a default remedy.
- Retry and verify. Confirm that the intended app or package version is active, the build and integration tests pass after dependency changes, or the reconciled data is correct after a sync retry.
The right recovery depends on the layer: installer identity and version policy govern package updates; dependency constraints govern builds; concurrency policy governs shared data. Keeping those diagnoses separate avoids destructive fixes that do not address the actual failure.
