Start by choosing those questions, then emit consistent structured records, exclude secrets and unnecessary personal data, connect logs with traces where useful, and operate the collection and retention process deliberately.
What should you log in your application?
Log events that help a responder understand system behavior, investigate failures, or detect security-relevant activity. Application code often knows details that infrastructure records do not, such as the actor’s identity and permissions, the requested action, its target, and its outcome. OWASP recommends treating application event sources as an important part of security logging, rather than relying only on infrastructure logs. OWASP Logging Cheat Sheet

For each event, ask what someone will need to answer during an incident or operational investigation. OWASP summarizes useful context as “when, where, who and what.” Depending on the event and your purpose, that may mean a timestamp, application or service identity, interaction identifier, actor, action, target, and outcome. Include only fields that help answer the question.
Choose events for their purpose
Include security-relevant events intentionally; do not assume they will be easy to find in a flood of generic debugging output. Examples in the OWASP Developer Guide include out-of-range submitted data, apparent tampering, and requests that violate server-side access-control rules. These are examples to tailor to your system, not an exhaustive list of events every application must record. OWASP Developer Guide: Logging
#1 Best Overall
- Up to 6000 visits per second
- Local area network synchronization timing accuracy: 0.5-2ms
- Support GPS, Beidou, GLONASS, QZSS NTP v2 (RFC 1119), NTP v3 (RFC 1305), NTP v4 (RFC5905)
- Internally integrated high- timing GNSS satellite receiver
- SNTP v3 (RFC 1769), SNTP v4 (RFC 2030)
Before adding an event, identify its intended user: an on-call operator, security analyst, developer, or investigator. If no one has a clear reason to use the record, reconsider collecting it.
How do you structure application logs?
Use structured records with stable field names and consistent meanings across the application or service portfolio. A record with individually addressable fields is easier for downstream systems to filter, redact, and analyze than a message whose important details are buried in free-form text. OpenTelemetry’s .NET guidance describes these benefits for structured logging; it is language-specific guidance, not a quantified performance claim for every logging library. Define a small schema that fits your use cases. For example, an access-control denial might include an event name, timestamp, service, interaction identifier, actor reference, requested action, target reference, and outcome. This is a shape for a record, not a mandate to collect every field: use identifiers or network details only when their purpose and handling are justified. Document what each field means so the same name does not represent different concepts in different services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse message text and fields for different jobs
Keep the event name and structured fields useful to machines and people. A concise message can help a human scan a record, while fields support filtering and analysis. Do not make a critical value available only inside a sentence that must be parsed later.

How do logs correlate with traces?
Correlation helps teams move from an individual log record to the broader execution path that produced it. OpenTelemetry describes three useful dimensions: time; execution context, such as trace and span identifiers; and resource context, which identifies the source producing telemetry. Together, these can help associate log records with traces and the participating components. OpenTelemetry Logs
Where your language and existing stack support it, OpenTelemetry describes integrating existing logging libraries through appenders or instrumentation, or using its Logs API for structured records. Choose an integration that fits your application and ecosystem; the guidance does not establish one implementation as universally best. OpenTelemetry is an observability framework, not itself a hosted logging service.

How do you avoid logging sensitive data?
Logs can expose personal information, system details, or business-sensitive data. Decide which fields are appropriate before emitting records, and exclude or mask sensitive values at the point of logging. OWASP specifically warns against recording passwords and unnecessary session identifiers. OWASP Logging Cheat Sheet OWASP Developer Guide: Logging

- Collect personal or business data only when it serves a defined purpose and is handled under applicable policy.
- Treat values supplied by users or external systems as untrusted. Validate or safely encode dangerous characters so they cannot forge log entries, disrupt processing, or execute in a log viewer.
- Use clearly synthetic values in examples; illustrative user IDs or IP addresses are not automatically safe to collect in production.
How do you operate and protect logging?
Logging is a system that must continue working after deployment. Establish a way to detect when expected logging stops, and processes to identify tampering, unauthorized access, or deletion. Protect records in transit and at rest, restrict access to people and systems that need it, and review that access. Make relevant records available to monitoring and incident-response workflows, and alert on serious events where an alert is appropriate. OWASP Logging Cheat Sheet

- Surge protection for serial, Ethernet, and power lines
- COM port grouping and UDP multicast applications / Screw connectors for secure installation
- Real COM/TTY drivers for Windows and Linux / Connect up to 8 TCP hosts
- Standard TCP/IP interface and versatile TCP and UDP operation modes
Set retention and disposal rules
There is no universal retention duration for every application. Set a policy that accounts for operational needs and applicable legal, regulatory, and contractual obligations. OWASP advises against destroying logs or their copies before the required period, and against keeping them beyond that period. Include secure disposal in the lifecycle rather than treating retention as indefinite.
Use enterprise guidance at the right level
NIST SP 800-92, Guide to Computer Security Log Management, provides practical guidance for developing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise log-management practices. NIST describes the technologies at a high level rather than presenting a step-by-step implementation tutorial. Its publication record lists September 13, 2006, so use it as broad management context rather than as a source for current product capabilities. NIST SP 800-92
