Design for the space the app has—not for a particular fold position. On Apple’s iPhone Duo, the outer display behaves like a compact-width iPhone and the inner display provides regular width. An adaptable app can preserve its familiar navigation and state while using the larger screen for related content, such as a list beside its detail view. These device-specific details are Apple’s; other foldable phones may expose different system behavior and APIs.
Build around available space, not a fold position
Make layout decisions from the space available to the interface rather than from a named pose, fixed screen width, or assumed orientation. Apple recommends compact width for the outer display and regular width for the inner display; it says the inner display has regular horizontal and vertical size classes and does not honor supported interface orientations as a basis for layout decisions. In SwiftUI, read the environment’s horizontal and vertical size classes. In UIKit, use the view’s trait collection. Avoid hard-coded dimensions and screen-specific breakpoints: flexible constraints, layout margins, and safe-area insets let the interface respond as available space changes. Apple’s general layout guidance recommends adaptive interfaces built with SwiftUI or Auto Layout and checking them across devices, orientations, localizations, and text sizes. [Apple Human Interface Guidelines: Layout]
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a layout that makes the inner display useful
Opening the device should reveal useful context, not merely stretch a narrow phone layout. Keep the same features, state, and information hierarchy available as the app moves between displays; use extra width to show related information together when the content supports it. Apple’s design guidance recommends avoiding fixed widths and metrics tied to a specific screen. [Apple Developer: Prepare your app for iPhone Duo] [Apple Developer: Design for iPhone Duo]

| Layout | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Single stack | Focused flows or content that benefits from one clear sequence, especially on the compact outer display. | Users can continue the same task when the device opens, without losing state or their place in the hierarchy. |
| Split view or two columns | Content with a useful relationship between a collection and a selected item, such as a list and detail view. | The second column adds context rather than empty space; selection and navigation remain understandable as width changes. |
| Sidebar | Information-dense tab-based apps where persistent navigation is useful on the wider inner display. | Navigation stays reachable, and the denser layout does not overwhelm the content. |
These are content-driven options, not layouts to assign to particular poses. Preserve familiar structure and choose the arrangement that makes scanning, task continuity, and control reachability work for the app. [Apple Developer: Prepare your app for iPhone Duo] [Apple Developer: Design for iPhone Duo]
Keep controls clear of safe areas and the center fold
Safe areas and margins can differ from one side of the screen to the other, particularly when the app is in Split View. Calculate each side independently rather than assuming symmetric insets. Keep interactive foreground content inside the safe area; backgrounds such as artwork can extend behind system bars when that remains visually clear. Apple says standard navigation, toolbar, and tab components adapt to the device, including vertical arrangements at the side of the display when appropriate. When the device is partly folded, inspect custom interactive elements near the center curve. Apple says system components such as sheets, alerts, menus, and toolbar buttons nudge interactive elements away from the fold, while scrollable content does not need the same avoidance. Prefer standard controls where they fit, and do not assume custom buttons receive the same treatment. [Apple Developer: Design for iPhone Duo]
For custom edge-to-edge interfaces, Apple identifies ReservedRegion for SwiftUI and UIViewReservedRegion for UIKit in the iOS 27.1 SDK as APIs for positioning custom UI around system-provided UI. These are version-specific tools, not prerequisites for every app. Confirm availability against the SDK you target. [Apple Developer: Prepare your app for iPhone Duo]

Audit assumptions about screens and geometry
On a device with two displays, a reference to the main screen is ambiguous. Apple’s engineering guidance recommends relying on the environment, trait collection, or scene bounds for layout; when a screen reference is needed, obtain it dynamically from the window scene. Also check code that assumes fixed bounds, a particular corner shape, or equal insets. Apple points to Concentricity APIs for adapting to screen corners. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the app across open, closed, and resized states
Apple’s preparation talk describes an iPhone Duo simulator in Device Hub with controls for opening, closing, rotating, and folding the device. It also describes incremental screen-use support across iOS 27 and iOS 27.1 SDK builds: the iOS 27 SDK improves inner-display use, while iOS 27.1 enables edge-to-edge screen use with standard navigation and toolbar buttons arranged vertically. These version details can change; check current Apple releases and Xcode requirements when setting up the project. [Apple Developer: Prepare your app for iPhone Duo]

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
- Set up the intended toolchain. Use a current Xcode and SDK that support the iPhone Duo experience you need to validate. Apple’s talk specifically describes Xcode 27.1 and the iPhone Duo simulator in Device Hub.
- Exercise the device poses. In Device Hub, test closed, open, rotated, and partially folded states. Check that the app’s state and hierarchy still make sense as the device changes.
- Check compact and regular widths. Verify the outer display’s compact-width configuration and the inner display’s regular-width configuration. Test orientation changes, but do not use orientation as a substitute for measuring available space.
- Test Split View on both sides. Drag the app into each side and check controls, margins, and safe-area insets. Apple notes vertical controls may appear at either edge, so one side alone is not sufficient.
- Vary screen size and environment. Check text resizing and localization expansion, then inspect the smallest and largest layouts. Apple’s simulator documentation describes changing environment settings and resizing a simulated iPhone screen to arbitrary dimensions, which can expose clipping and layout failures. [Apple Developer: Setting up your project to support multiple simulators]
- Inspect the interaction details. Test navigation, sheets, toolbar overflow, scrollable content, and custom controls near the fold. Confirm that important content remains readable and interactive rather than being obscured by system UI or device geometry.
- Validate on hardware when available. A simulator is useful for repeatable layout checks, but physical hardware can reveal device-specific behavior that simulation may not fully represent.
Apple’s general layout guidance also recommends previews across devices, orientations, localizations, and text sizes. Treat the simulator as a way to broaden those checks, not as a single portrait screenshot that stands in for the full experience. [Apple Human Interface Guidelines: Layout]
