How to Design an Autonomous Fraud Investigation Agent with TigerGraph and LangGraph

A practical design for combining graph-based fraud evidence with stateful agent workflows—without confusing model summaries for proof or automation for approval.

A fraud investigation agent can use TigerGraph to retrieve and analyze connected evidence, then use LangGraph to coordinate repeatable checks, model-assisted analysis, case state, and analyst review. The key is to keep graph findings reproducible and to require review before consequential actions. This is a design pattern, not a claim that the two products provide a turnkey integrated fraud system.

Why investigate fraud as a graph?

Transaction-by-transaction rules can miss relationships spread across accounts, people, devices, addresses, and time. A graph represents those entities as nodes and their interactions or shared attributes as edges. An investigator can then follow connections across multiple hops instead of evaluating each event in isolation.

For example, two accounts may appear unrelated until they are found to share a device, a credential, or an infrastructure point. A graph query can return the path connecting them, along with the relevant entities and interactions. Such a connection is evidence to investigate, not proof of fraud by itself.

TigerGraph describes graph-based fraud investigation in terms of connected patterns and paths. The useful design question is not simply whether a system can find a connection, but whether it can show an analyst exactly which path or rule produced the finding.

What each part of the architecture does

TigerGraph: represent and query relationship evidence

Use the graph layer to organize relevant entities and relationships, retrieve a bounded subgraph around a case subject, and run traversals or rules for suspicious connections. Examples of patterns to investigate include shared devices or IP addresses, repeated credentials, connected account groups, and transaction cycles. The graph is the evidence and query layer; it is not, by itself, the agent workflow or an automatic determination that an account is fraudulent.

LangGraph: coordinate the investigation workflow

LangGraph is a runtime for coordinating stateful, potentially long-running agent workflows. Its documentation describes combining hand-coded steps with model-driven steps, persisting workflow state, and adding human review. It is not a fraud database or a fraud model. In this architecture, it can coordinate when graph queries run, how their results are interpreted, what happens when evidence is uncertain, and how an investigation resumes after interruption.

The boundary between them

Keep graph retrieval and repeatable risk checks as explicit, bounded operations. Let the language model summarize returned evidence or suggest a follow-up query, but do not let it invent missing connections or silently convert a suggestion into a finding. This division separates deterministic computation from interpretation and workflow coordination.

A bounded investigation workflow

  1. Open a scoped case. Start with an alert or investigation request, establish the permitted subject and time range, and identify which data the case may access.
  2. Resolve identifiers and retrieve evidence. Match the subject to the relevant graph entities, then retrieve a bounded, time-aware subgraph. Apply access controls, query limits, and any applicable data-minimization rules.
  3. Run deterministic checks. Use explicit traversals, rules, and risk features to find direct and multi-hop connections. Keep the query or rule that generated each finding available to the case.
  4. Ask the model to interpret, not fabricate. Have it summarize the returned evidence and, where useful, propose a follow-up query. Require each factual claim to point to specific graph paths or returned records; if the evidence does not support a claim, the summary should say so.
  5. Persist the case and route exceptions. Save workflow state so a long-running investigation can resume. Send uncertain cases and proposed high-impact actions to an analyst rather than treating model output as authorization.
  6. Record the outcome. Preserve the evidence, queries, model output, analyst edits, and final disposition in a form appropriate to the organization’s audit and retention requirements.

This sequence combines TigerGraph’s description of graph-based fraud analysis with LangGraph’s documented workflow capabilities. It is an architectural proposal; it does not establish an out-of-the-box integration or prescribe a particular version, API, schema, or deployment configuration.

Make findings traceable and decisions reviewable

A useful case summary should let an investigator reproduce and challenge the escalation. For each finding, show the connected entities, the path between them, relevant timestamps, and the query or rule that returned the result. Separate observed facts from model-generated interpretation, and identify uncertainty rather than smoothing it into a confident narrative.

Human review is especially important before actions such as restricting an account or declining a transaction. That placement is a design recommendation, not a product guarantee. Define which actions the workflow may take automatically, which require analyst approval, and what information the reviewer must see before deciding.

  • Evidence: retain the paths and records that support the finding.
  • Reproducibility: retain the query or rule and relevant time scope.
  • Model boundaries: distinguish retrieved facts from summaries and hypotheses.
  • Review: preserve analyst changes and the final disposition.

What a customer example does—and does not—show

TigerGraph’s NewDay customer story says the provider used TigerGraph Cloud to connect data from silos and help its fraud team find links among accounts known or suspected to be at risk. The story attributes this statement to Danny Clark, identified as NewDay’s Head of Fraud Prevention: “At the same time, we wanted to enable our fraud investigation team to act autonomously—without relying on developers—tuning queries in near-real-time with ‘train-of-thought’ analysis and speed.”

This is a vendor-published customer testimonial. It illustrates the motivation for connecting data and enabling fraud teams to investigate, but it is not independent validation of outcomes or evidence that the TigerGraph–LangGraph architecture described here was used.

How to evaluate a graph-backed agent

Compare a graph-backed agent with a conventional event-and-rule workflow by asking whether it improves the investigation task while preserving controls. The important dimensions are:

  • Relationship depth: Can the system query useful multi-hop connections among accounts, people, devices, and transactions?
  • Evidence traceability: Can an investigator inspect the paths and reproduce why the case was raised?
  • Control boundaries: Which steps are deterministic, which involve an LLM, and where is human approval required?
  • State and recovery: Can a long-running case resume without losing its state or review history?
  • Operational fit: How will ingestion, access control, latency, model evaluation, and audit retention work in the actual environment?

These are evaluation questions, not established product-specific answers. Validate them against the organization’s data, governance requirements, and deployment before relying on the workflow operationally.

What performance claims can be concluded?

TigerGraph publishes vendor materials and customer stories that include performance and return-on-investment claims. The underlying methodologies and independent validation for the headline figures are not established here, so those claims should not be treated as general outcomes or as results of a combined TigerGraph–LangGraph system. No independently substantiated benchmark for this exact architecture is established.
