A no-loss persistence campaign is a practical effort to keep project data recoverable as it moves through import, editing, storage, export, backup, restore, and migration. It is an engineering objective, not a universal warranty: the useful question is, “what must remain true as this project crosses each boundary?”
The campaign described in the DEV Community article treats each boundary as its own preservation problem. A successful save alone cannot show that user-owned data will survive every later transition.

Map the data’s full journey
Start by listing every point where the application accepts, changes, stores, projects, or replaces data. At each boundary, write down the incoming representation, the authority allowed to write it, the transformations permitted, and the failure behavior. This makes it harder to mistake a working save function for end-to-end recoverability.
- Ingress: Imported or restored content needs an admitted representation and validation before it replaces active state.
- Editing: An open editor may hold an old baseline if an import or restore replaced the project while it remained open.
- Durable commit: A replacement becomes the baseline for later edits only after its storage operation commits.
- Export and backup: Portable output and a recovery snapshot can have different purposes and therefore different preservation rules.
- Restore and migration: Historical data must be admitted against the expected identity and authority; a migration should retain the old form until its candidate is validated.
For each boundary, ask: what must remain exact, what may be transformed, what is intentionally omitted, and what should happen if validation or storage fails?

Keep identity and writer authority aligned
A project identifier by itself does not prove that an editor is writing current data. Consider an editor that loads a project, then remains open while a restore replaces the stored project. If the old editor later saves using only the project identifier, it can overwrite the restored version with its stale state.
One design described in the campaign binds an editing baseline to the storage target, writer authority, and a replacement epoch. The epoch lets the application distinguish the version an editor began from the version that now owns the storage location. Before committing, the writer can confirm that its authority and baseline still match the current target; if not, it should reject or reconcile the stale write rather than silently clobber the replacement.
Make the durable commit the handoff point
Showing replacement data in the interface is not the same as making it durable. Treat a replacement as authoritative for subsequent edits only after its storage operation succeeds. If it fails, preserve the previous valid baseline and surface the failure rather than presenting the new view as safely saved.

In browsers, IndexedDB work occurs in transactions. A transaction may abort because of invalid requests, an explicit abort, an uncaught handler exception, an I/O error, quota exhaustion, or a user-agent crash. The MDN IDBTransaction reference, last modified September 22, 2026, also cautions that transaction completion does not imply identical disk-flush guarantees in every browser configuration. Observe transaction outcomes and avoid turning a successful UI transition into a universal durability promise.
Choose the fidelity contract for each output
Data has at least three relevant forms: its original text or raw carrier, its parsed structured model, and text newly produced by serialization. Parsing and serializing can normalize whitespace and key order, or drop fields the model does not support. Decide which form a boundary promises to preserve.
- Exact source fidelity: If the promise is to preserve the source as supplied, retain the original text rather than assuming a reconstructed model will reproduce it byte for byte.
- Semantic fidelity: If the promise is that supported project meaning survives, test the required fields and behavior after parsing and reconstruction; formatting equality is not the right measure.
- Intentional projection: A portable export may omit machine-local metadata by design. Document those omissions and the edits that are applied, rather than treating every difference from the source as data loss.
Fail closed when required data is unknown or unsupported if silently dropping it would violate the stated contract.

- Tension and fear can be felt around Pogoren. Soldiers occupying the city keep disappearing, units of militia gather in abandoned buildings, and harrowed citizens are preparing themselves for the worst.
- It seems another armed conflict is at hand. No one knows who will strike first, while the international peacekeeping forces maintain their aloof neutrality. At the same time, more and more kids are left without parents as people die of starvation and violence. Will players risk their own survival to help the little ones?

Give export and backup distinct jobs
A canonical export is often a portable projection of the project model. A stored snapshot may instead be designed to restore a particular application state. They need not contain the same fields or follow the same equality test.
Specify what each output includes, what it deliberately omits, and whether it is intended for portability, recovery, or both. If machine-local state is excluded from export but required for recovery, the backup contract must account for that difference. Do not label an export a backup unless its contents and restore path actually satisfy the recovery promise.
Validate restores and migrations before replacing data
Restore
A restore should check that the snapshot belongs to the expected project and is valid under the current application’s admission rules. Ambiguous identity or malformed content should not silently replace active state. Keep the existing data available until the candidate has been accepted and durably committed.

Migration
- Retain the old representation in a recoverable form.
- Transform it into a candidate representation without discarding the retained copy.
- Validate the candidate, including its identity and required fields.
- Confirm that the migration still has authority to replace the current target.
- Commit the candidate, then retire the old copy only when the new form is known to be usable.
This sequence separates successful conversion from safe replacement: a candidate can parse correctly and still be the wrong project or an obsolete write.

Browser storage quotas and eviction policies vary. MDN describes web storage as persistent or best-effort, so browser storage should not be presented as a guaranteed backup. The application needs an explicit export or backup and recovery story suited to its users.

Build evidence around failure cases
A campaign is credible when its invariants are testable at each boundary, not merely asserted in a release note. Record the incoming representation, identity and authority, allowed transformations, exact fields, omissions, failure response, and evidence that a durable transition occurred.
- Interrupt or abort writes and confirm the previous valid data remains usable.
- Replace a project while an asynchronous save is pending; verify a stale editor cannot overwrite the replacement.
- Submit malformed imports and ambiguous restores; confirm they do not replace active state.
- Exercise quota exhaustion and transaction failures; confirm errors are surfaced and recovery paths remain available.
- Restore from retained backups and verify the promised fields and project identity.
The campaign’s #553 lineage records safeguards in some paths while also identifying residual restore-ingress work. It is therefore best understood as a bounded engineering effort, not proof that every path has been tested or that all data loss is impossible. As the article’s author, qnbs, puts it: “No-loss” should therefore be read as an engineering objective with stated invariants and evidence—not a universal warranty.
