What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To remove a lost computer from your Kindle account, sign in to the Amazon account used by Kindle, open Manage Your Content and Devices, select Devices, choose the Kindle desktop entry for that computer, and select Deregister. Confirm if prompted. You do not need access to the computer to use this account-side method.
How do I deregister Kindle PC from a lost computer?
- Sign in to the Amazon account that was registered in the Kindle app.
- Open Manage Your Content and Devices and go to Devices.
- Locate the Kindle desktop device entry associated with the lost computer and select it. Check the entry carefully so you do not deregister another Kindle device.
- Choose Deregister and confirm if Amazon asks you to.
What happens after deregistration?
Amazon says deregistration disconnects the device from the account’s digital content and Amazon services. The computer will no longer have access through that registered Kindle app. If you regain access to the computer and want to use Kindle on it again, register the app with your Amazon account credentials.

Deregistering is not the same as remotely erasing a computer. Amazon’s account procedure removes the device’s registration; it does not describe deleting files or wiping the computer.

If the computer is available and Kindle for Windows opens, you can sign out locally instead: open Kindle, select the Settings icon in the top menu toolbar, choose Sign out, and confirm. Amazon says this signs the app out, deregisters that installation, and deletes its downloaded content. See Amazon’s Kindle for Windows sign-out instructions.

Is a factory reset necessary?
No. For a lost PC, use the Amazon account’s Devices page. Amazon’s factory-reset instructions cover an accessible Kindle e-reader, where the reset is performed on the device. They describe removing personal data, downloaded content, and unsynced content, as well as deregistering the e-reader when the reset finishes. That is a different task from remotely deregistering a computer.
Support status of Kindle for PC
Amazon states that “The Legacy Kindle app (previously called Kindle for PC) isn’t supported as of June 30, 2026.” This support date does not change the account-side steps for removing a registered computer.
