Build a versioned release, install production-only dependencies, provide secrets outside Git, compile assets, run compatible Doctrine migrations, clear and warm the production cache, then switch traffic to the new release. Nginx should expose only the application’s public/ directory and forward PHP requests to PHP-FPM. HTTPS, restricted SSH, backups, workers, monitoring and a tested rollback path complete the production setup.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The exact Ubuntu package names, PHP-FPM socket, database engine, Symfony branch and Messenger transport depend on the application. Start with the project’s composer.json, Symfony requirements and the Ubuntu release you selected; use the procedure below as a release design rather than an assumption that every server has identical versions.

What a Symfony production release contains
Symfony’s deployment guidance treats deployment as a sequence of application operations: upload the code, install vendor dependencies, run database migrations and clear or warm the cache. A production-grade process adds the controls that make those operations safe and repeatable.
- Versioned code: Every release has an identifiable commit, tag or build artifact.
- Production dependencies: Composer installs the packages needed at runtime without development tools.
- Configuration and secrets: Database credentials, encryption keys, mail credentials and API tokens are supplied by the server or deployment system, never committed to the repository.
- Assets: AssetMapper, Encore or another configured build pipeline produces the files that browsers need.
- Database state: Doctrine migrations are run deliberately against the intended database.
- Runtime state: Symfony’s production cache is rebuilt, writable directories have correct ownership, and PHP-FPM, Nginx and workers use the new release.
Keep these steps ordered. Do not point the active web root at half-installed code, and do not run a migration against code that cannot understand the resulting schema.

1. Confirm the compatibility matrix
Record the versions before creating the VPS. The application’s composer.json is authoritative for PHP and package constraints; the Symfony branch documentation and lock file identify additional requirements.
| Item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Symfony | Major/minor branch and framework bundles | Supported PHP versions, configuration conventions and console commands vary by branch. |
| PHP | Required version and extensions | PHP-FPM must run the same compatible version as the CLI used for Composer and console commands. |
| Database | Engine, server version, character set and connection method | Doctrine mappings and migrations can depend on engine capabilities and SQL behavior. |
| Web server | Nginx version and PHP-FPM service/socket name | The Nginx upstream must match the socket installed by Ubuntu. |
| Frontend | AssetMapper, Encore, Vite or another build tool; Node version if applicable | Assets must be built with the project’s supported toolchain. |
| Workers | Messenger transport names and process manager | Asynchronous messages require a consumer that is started, supervised and stopped safely. |
Do not describe one PHP or Ubuntu version as universal. Package names such as php-fpm and the socket under /run/php/ are distribution- and version-dependent. Pin the versions in your deployment notes and verify them on the actual VPS.
2. Prepare and harden the Ubuntu VPS
Create a deployment account
Use the provider’s console for the first login, apply updates, and create a non-root account for deployments and application services.
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
sudo adduser deploy
sudo usermod -aG sudo deploy
Install the deploy user’s SSH public key in /home/deploy/.ssh/authorized_keys, test a second SSH session, and only then disable password authentication or direct root login in the SSH daemon configuration. Keep one tested administrative access method before closing the original session.
Limit network exposure
Allow only the ports the service needs. A typical web VPS exposes SSH, HTTP and HTTPS; the database should listen only on localhost or a private network when it is not a separate managed service.
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw allow 80/tcp
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose
Use the provider’s network firewall as a second boundary where available. Set the correct timezone and keep time synchronization enabled; consistent timestamps make logs, certificates and scheduled jobs easier to diagnose.
Choose a filesystem layout
A release layout separates immutable code from mutable state. One practical arrangement is:
/var/www/myapp/
current -> releases/20261015-120000
releases/20261015-120000/
releases/20261014-180000/
shared/.env.local
shared/uploads/
shared/var/
Keep .env.local, uploaded files and backups in shared, outside Git and outside the public directory. Each release can symlink to those paths. Ensure the user running PHP-FPM can write only to the directories Symfony requires, normally var/cache and var/log, plus any upload directory.

3. Install the runtime
Install Nginx, PHP-FPM, PHP CLI, Composer and the extensions required by the application. A common Symfony project needs extensions such as XML, cURL, mbstring, Intl and ZIP, but the project’s dependency constraints are the authority; do not install an arbitrary list and assume it is sufficient.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nginx php-fpm php-cli php-xml php-mbstring php-intl php-curl php-zip php-opcache unzip git
Ubuntu may provide a versioned PHP package instead of the generic metapackage. Check the installed binaries and services:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →php -v
php -m
systemctl list-units --type=service 'php*-fpm.service'
ls /run/php/
Install Composer using a maintained distribution method, verify its installer or package according to Composer’s security instructions, and make the same Composer version available to the deploy account and any CI runner. Install the database client or server components required by your chosen architecture. If the database is on the VPS, bind it to localhost or a private interface, create a dedicated application account, and do not expose its port through the firewall.
4. Use versioned releases instead of editing the live tree
In-place edits make it difficult to identify what is running and nearly impossible to roll back cleanly. A release directory lets you prepare and validate code before changing the one current symlink that Nginx uses.
- Create a new timestamped directory under
/var/www/myapp/releases. - Upload a tagged archive or fetch the exact commit into that directory. Record the commit or artifact checksum in the release notes.
- Link the shared environment file, uploads and any shared runtime directories into the release.
- Run Composer, asset, migration and cache commands from the new directory.
- Run smoke checks while the old release remains active.
- Atomically replace the
currentsymlink only after validation succeeds.
Retain enough previous releases to support a rollback, while deleting old releases only after confirming that no worker or scheduled task still references them.
5. Execute a repeatable release
Install production dependencies
From the new release directory, install the lock file without development packages and optimize the autoloader:
composer install --no-dev --prefer-dist --no-interaction --optimize-autoloader
Do not run Composer as root. The command must use the PHP version and extensions selected in the compatibility matrix. A missing extension or an out-of-range PHP version should fail the release before any symlink switch.
Provide production configuration
Store production values in the server environment or a protected shared file. Link the file into the release, for example:

ln -sfn /var/www/myapp/shared/.env.local /var/www/myapp/releases/20261015-120000/.env.local
Set the intended environment explicitly when invoking console commands, especially if the server also contains development defaults:
APP_ENV=prod APP_DEBUG=0 php bin/console about
Protect the shared file with restrictive ownership and permissions. Never commit database passwords, signing keys or third-party tokens. If your deployment platform injects environment variables instead of using .env.local, verify that PHP-FPM receives them; a variable available in an interactive shell is not automatically available to a service.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Build frontend assets
Run only the build used by the project. AssetMapper applications commonly compile or publish assets through a Symfony console command; Encore-based applications generally run the Node package manager and the project’s production build script. For an Encore project, the pattern may be:
npm ci
npm run build
Use the Node version declared by the project and keep generated files in the release. Do not guess a command for an application that has no frontend build; inspect its scripts and Symfony configuration first.
Run Doctrine migrations as a release operation
Back up the database according to your recovery target, confirm the connection points to production, and run migrations deliberately:
APP_ENV=prod php bin/console doctrine:migrations:migrate --no-interaction
Deploy code that is compatible with both the old and new schema when a migration changes a live table. For example, add a nullable column before shipping code that writes it, backfill in a controlled job, and remove obsolete columns only after no running release needs them. Watch the migration output and application logs; a successful process exit does not replace checking constraints, indexes and application behavior. Record the migration version and keep a tested database restore procedure. If a migration fails, stop the release and investigate rather than switching the active symlink.

Run any other required one-time commands, such as installing bundles or creating directories, before cutover.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Switch traffic atomically
Perform a local smoke test against the prepared release where practical: boot the kernel, connect to the database, render a representative route and verify cache writes. Then replace the symlink in one operation:
ln -sfn /var/www/myapp/releases/20261015-120000 /var/www/myapp/current
Reload Nginx only if its configuration changed. PHP-FPM can continue serving requests, but restart or reload it when required by changed PHP configuration or opcode cache policy. Use the actual versioned service unit installed on the VPS.
6. Configure Nginx and PHP-FPM correctly
Nginx must point to Symfony’s public/ directory, never the project root. This prevents direct access to source files, .env files, vendor code and application configuration. Non-file requests go to Symfony’s front controller, while PHP execution is handed to the matching PHP-FPM Unix socket.
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
root /var/www/myapp/current/public;
index index.php;
location / {
try_files $uri /index.php$is_args$args;
}
location ~ ^/index.php(/|$) {
internal;

fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $realpath_root$fastcgi_script_name;
fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_ROOT $realpath_root;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
}
location ~ .php$ {
return 404;
}
location ~ /. {
deny all;
}
}
Replace the socket path with the one shown by ls /run/php/; on many Ubuntu releases it includes a PHP version. The internal rule prevents a visitor from requesting /index.php directly while still allowing Nginx’s internal rewrite to execute it. Test the configuration before reloading:
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
Review PHP-FPM pool settings for the deploy user, process limits, upload size and timeout requirements. Keep secrets and uploads outside public/; if users need uploaded files, serve them through a controlled public path or a Symfony authorization endpoint rather than exposing the entire shared directory.
7. Add HTTPS and verify the application
Point DNS at the VPS, obtain a certificate with a maintained ACME client, configure Nginx for TLS, redirect HTTP to HTTPS, and test renewal before relying on the certificate. Keep the renewal timer or scheduled job enabled and monitor expiry.
After cutover, check more than the home page:
- Request a representative public route and confirm the expected status code.
- Sign in with a test account and exercise one authenticated route.
- Verify database reads and writes, cache writes and session storage.
- Send a controlled test through mail or external API integrations.
- Check asset URLs, uploaded-file handling and security headers.
- Inspect Nginx, PHP-FPM and Symfony logs for warnings, 404 responses and fatal errors.
- Call a health endpoint that tests the dependencies you genuinely need, without exposing credentials or detailed exception output.
Keep APP_DEBUG=0 in production. A detailed exception page can disclose paths, configuration and database information.
8. Keep Messenger workers alive safely
If the application uses asynchronous Messenger transports, a web request alone will not process the queue. Run consumers under Supervisor or systemd, and bound each process so it is recycled before an unnoticed memory leak or long-lived state becomes an outage.

Graceful worker handling during releases
Before switching releases, ask workers to stop after their current message so the process manager starts them from the new path:
APP_ENV=prod php bin/console messenger:stop-workers
Confirm that the process manager has restarted consumers and inspect failed messages after deployment. Set retry and failure-transport policies deliberately; a queue that appears healthy can still be losing messages if failures are discarded or never reviewed.
9. Operate the VPS after deployment
Centralize and retain Nginx access/error logs, PHP-FPM logs, Symfony application logs and worker journals. Rotate them so a busy site cannot fill the disk. Monitor disk space, memory, CPU, HTTP 5xx responses, queue depth, failed messages, database availability and certificate expiry. Alerts should identify an actionable threshold and an owner, not merely collect dashboards.
Back up the database and uploaded files on a schedule that matches the data-loss tolerance. Keep at least one copy away from the VPS, encrypt sensitive backups, test restoration on another environment and document how to find the active release and migration version. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Apply Ubuntu security updates in a maintenance process, review SSH access, remove unused packages and services, and keep Composer, Node and deployment credentials out of shell history and world-readable files. Staging should use the same PHP extensions, web-server behavior and worker commands as production so a release is tested under comparable conditions.
10. Roll back without guessing
Define rollback before the first production migration. Application rollback is usually an atomic symlink change; database rollback is a separate decision because migrations can be destructive or irreversible.
- Stop or drain workers if the new code is consuming messages.
- Identify the last known-good release and confirm which migration version production has reached.
- Switch
currentback to that release and reload services only when necessary. - If the schema changed, use the migration’s documented backward-compatible path or restore a verified database backup; do not blindly run a down migration on live data.
- Restore or re-link shared uploads only if the failed release changed their format or location.
- Run smoke checks, inspect logs and record the incident and data state.
Test this procedure in staging, including a failed migration and a worker restart. Keep release archives, database backup timestamps and migration records together so an operator can make the rollback decision under pressure.
Deployment approaches compared
| Approach | Release safety | Operational complexity | Downtime behavior | Worker and state handling | Recovery profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual in-place SSH edits | Lowest; partial files can become live | Low initially, high during incidents | Often requires a maintenance window or service restart | Workers may run mixed code; shared state is easy to overwrite | Rollback depends on remembered commands and ad-hoc backups |
| Versioned directories with an active symlink | High; prepare and validate before atomic cutover | Moderate; requires a release script and cleanup policy | Can be near-zero for code cutover, subject to migrations and worker draining | Shared environment and uploads are explicit; workers restart onto the new path | Previous release remains available, but database recovery still needs a tested plan |
| Scripted CI/CD deployment | High when checks, approvals and artifact integrity are enforced | Higher setup, lower repetition and fewer manual errors | Supports health-checked cutover and automated rollback steps | Worker restart, migrations and secrets are codified | Audit trail and repeatability are strongest, provided backups and migration policy are sound |
Choose the simplest approach that your team can operate consistently. Automation does not make an unsafe migration reversible, and a manual process can be safe when it is scripted, reviewed and run from a documented checklist.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 502 Bad Gateway | PHP-FPM is stopped or Nginx points to the wrong socket | Check the installed FPM unit, socket path, service status and Nginx error log; run nginx -t before reloading. |
| 404 for every Symfony route | Root is not the release’s public/ directory or try_files is missing |
Confirm the current/public path and front-controller location. |
| 500 after cutover | Missing environment variable, cache permissions, incompatible PHP extension or failed migration | Read Symfony and PHP-FPM logs, run APP_ENV=prod APP_DEBUG=0 php bin/console about as the service user, and do not expose debug output publicly. |
| Assets return 404 | Frontend build was skipped or generated files are absent from the release | Run the project’s documented production asset command and verify the generated paths under public/. |
| Workers are idle | Wrong transport name, missing credentials or a stopped process manager | Inspect worker status and journal output, verify Messenger configuration and check queue connectivity. |
| Migration succeeds but requests fail | Code and schema were deployed in an incompatible order | Restore service with a compatible release, assess data changes, and use a staged expand-and-contract migration next time. |
| Disk fills unexpectedly | Unrotated logs, old releases, cache growth or uploaded files | Measure each directory, configure rotation and retention, remove only releases no longer needed for rollback, and monitor free space. |
The Bottom Line
Deploy Symfony to an Ubuntu VPS as a controlled release: verify the compatibility matrix, harden the host, prepare a versioned directory, install production dependencies, inject secrets, build assets, migrate deliberately, warm the production cache, validate through Nginx and PHP-FPM, then switch the active symlink. Keep HTTPS, supervised workers, backups, monitoring and a tested rollback procedure as part of the deployment—not as optional follow-up work.
