Use srcset and sizes when the same image needs to fit different layout widths; use density descriptors for a fixed rendered size; and use <picture> when the image or crop should change at a breakpoint. In every case, keep a useful <img> fallback, make sizes match the real layout, and reserve the image’s space with dimensions or an aspect ratio.

Choose the right responsive-image markup

What needs to change Use Key decision
The same image, shown at different layout widths <img srcset> with width (w) descriptors and sizes Describe the expected rendered slot width accurately.
The same image at a fixed rendered size on screens with different pixel densities <img srcset> with density (x) descriptors Use this when rendered size is fixed, not when it depends on viewport width.
A different crop or image for a layout condition <picture> with media-conditioned <source> elements and an <img> child Provide a meaningful fallback and check the aspect ratios.
Avoiding a layout jump while an image loads width and height attributes, or a CSS aspect ratio reservation Reserve space that matches the image’s intended presentation.

The browser uses the candidate images, the slot-width hint, and device characteristics to choose a resource. CSS still determines the image’s rendered dimensions; sizes does not set the layout width. The HTML Standard describes x descriptors as a way to provide versions that vary in size, and says that approach is not appropriate when rendered size depends on viewport width. Use srcset and sizes for a flexible-width image

When the image content stays the same but its layout slot gets wider or narrower, provide files at several intrinsic widths. Use a w descriptor for each candidate’s pixel width, then use sizes to tell the browser how wide the image is expected to appear under relevant conditions.

<img
  src="photo-800.jpg"
  srcset="photo-480.jpg 480w, photo-800.jpg 800w, photo-1200.jpg 1200w"
  sizes="(width <= 600px) 100vw, 800px"
  width="1200"
  height="800"
  alt="Describe the meaningful content of the photograph"
>

This example says the slot is the full viewport width at widths up to 600 CSS pixels and 800 CSS pixels otherwise. That is only accurate if the actual layout behaves that way. If the image sits in a narrower column, has page gutters, or grows beyond 800 pixels, update the sizes values to reflect those conditions. The browser uses the hints to select among available candidates; CSS remains responsible for the rendered box. MDN: Responsive images

Generate candidates that suit the actual layout

Make candidate files from the same source image at useful widths for the slots your page really uses. A candidate that is too small may look soft when enlarged; a much larger candidate can transfer unnecessary bytes. The browser cannot choose a width that is not available in the declared set.

Keep the fallback and layout dimensions coherent

The src attribute supplies a fallback image. The width and height attributes communicate its intrinsic ratio so the browser can reserve space before the file finishes loading. If your responsive candidates have the same ratio, this is straightforward. If a presentation changes the ratio, reserve the correct ratio for that presentation with appropriate markup or CSS so the layout does not unexpectedly shift.

Use density descriptors only for a fixed rendered size

If an image is always rendered at the same CSS size but you have variants for different pixel densities, x descriptors can offer those variants. For example, a small icon rendered at a fixed 48 CSS pixels can have 1x and 2x source files. This is a different problem from a fluid image whose rendered width changes with the viewport: for that case, use width descriptors with sizes.

Do not combine the two selection models in one srcset. Choose the descriptor type that matches the sizing behavior of the image.

Use <picture> when the crop or content should change

For art direction, offer a different source under a media condition and retain an <img> fallback. This is useful when a wide composition becomes too small or loses its focal point on a narrow screen.

<picture>
  <source media="(width <= 600px)" srcset="portrait-crop-600.jpg">
  <img src="wide-image-1200.jpg" width="1200" height="675" alt="Describe the meaningful image content">
</picture>

The browser evaluates the source options and uses the img fallback when appropriate. If each art-directed source also needs multiple resolutions, add srcset and, where needed, sizes to the source candidates. Ensure the selected crops suit their intended layouts and account for any ratio change so the image does not cause an unexpected layout shift. MDN: Responsive images

Make mobile viewport sizing work as expected

Include a viewport declaration in the document head so mobile browsers lay out the page using the device width:

Without a suitable viewport setting, a mobile browser may lay out a page using a wider virtual viewport, which can make both the CSS layout and image-selection assumptions differ from the intended narrow-screen design. MDN: Responsive images

Check loading behavior and performance without assuming a fixed saving

Responsive candidates can avoid downloading a needlessly large image for a small slot, but the byte saving depends on the source files, compression, layout, and browser choice. MDN’s worked example compares an 800-pixel image at 128KB with a 480-pixel image at 63KB, a 65KB difference in that example—not a general performance guarantee. MDN: Responsive images

Keep images in the initial HTML when practical so the browser can discover them during normal page parsing. The web.dev guidance recommends avoiding preload where possible and warns that overusing it can degrade performance; treat preload as a selective page-level choice rather than an automatic part of responsive-image markup. web.dev: Preload responsive images

Troubleshoot common responsive-image problems

  • The browser downloads an image that looks too large for the slot: Check that sizes describes the real rendered slot at the current viewport and that the candidate widths are appropriate. Remember that sizes is a selection hint, not a CSS width rule.
  • The image looks soft on a high-density display: Check whether a larger suitable candidate exists in srcset and whether the markup describes the right sizing model. Width-based layouts need w candidates and accurate sizes; fixed-size images can use density descriptors.
  • The mobile view shows the wrong composition: Use art direction with <picture> and a media-conditioned <source>, rather than expecting a single image file to provide a different crop.
  • The page jumps when the image appears: Set intrinsic width and height or reserve the correct aspect ratio in CSS. Check especially whether a breakpoint switches to a crop with a different ratio.
  • The layout behaves differently on a phone than expected: Confirm the document has <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width"> and that your media conditions and sizes match the resulting layout.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture how a page appears at different viewport sizes, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return an image or PDF; its viewport options include 12 device presets and custom viewport sizes. For responsive-image delivery itself, use the HTML patterns above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does sizes control how wide an image appears?

No. It describes the expected slot width for candidate selection; CSS controls the rendered layout width.

Should I use srcset or <picture>?

Use srcset to offer size variants of the same image. Use <picture> when the source image or crop should change for a media condition.
