How to Deliver Low-Latency Events from Object Storage to Consumers

Route object-change notifications to queues, event buses, or consumers—and design for duplicate delivery, reordering, retries, and delays rather than treating typical latency as a guarantee.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To notify consumers quickly when an object is uploaded, configure the object store to publish a change event to a queue, event bus, function, or notification service. The event tells a consumer what changed; the consumer then retrieves or processes the object. Design the whole path for duplicate events, retries, out-of-order delivery, and delays: “typically seconds” is not a hard end-to-end latency guarantee.

How object-storage event delivery works

An event-driven pipeline separates the act of storing an object from the work that follows it. The storage service emits a notification about an object change. A transport receives that notification and makes it available to one or more consumers. A consumer handles the event, fetches the relevant object if needed, and records the result of its work.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This is usually more responsive than having an application repeatedly list a bucket or poll for new objects, but it changes the engineering problem rather than removing it. The event is a signal that a storage operation happened, not a promise that a consumer will see the object immediately, that it will receive the signal only once, or that no later change has occurred by the time it acts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Configure the source: select the object-change events that matter, such as object creation, and narrow them with supported key-prefix or suffix filters.
  2. Choose a transport: route notifications to a queue, event bus, function, or publish/subscribe service based on fan-out, buffering, routing, and consumer needs.
  3. Make the consumer resilient: parse the event, identify the relevant object and version where available, retrieve it if necessary, and process it idempotently.
  4. Measure completion: observe the path from object creation through successful consumer work, not just the time it takes the storage service to emit a notification.

Keep the event and the object distinct in the design. The notification is compact information that signals a change; it is not the object payload itself. The consumer can use that signal to find and fetch the object it needs. This lets the transport carry event metadata rather than treating the notification as a copy of the file, and makes it clear that retrieval and processing time belong in the latency budget too.

What “low latency” can and cannot mean

Amazon Web Services says Amazon S3 Event Notifications typically arrive in seconds, but can sometimes take a minute or longer. That is provider-reported typical behavior, not a measured benchmark or a service-level guarantee. Google Cloud says Cloud Storage Pub/Sub notifications are typically delivered within seconds, while explicitly stating that there is no delivery-time SLA and substantial delays can occur. Both descriptions concern notification delivery; neither establishes a deadline for a downstream consumer to finish processing.

AWS separately reports typical Amazon EventBridge latency of about half a second and notes that latency can vary. Do not treat that figure as the latency of an S3-to-consumer pipeline: it is not an end-to-end promise, and it does not cover all of the work between an upload and successful processing. Queue waiting, retries, consumer availability, object retrieval, and processing time can all affect the result.

For a strict service-level objective (SLO), define exactly what is timed—for example, from successful object creation to a durable processing result—and test that full path in the intended region and account. A provider’s typical notification timing can help set expectations, but it cannot by itself establish that the pipeline meets a hard deadline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be explicit about the endpoint in any latency target. Measuring upload-to-event-receipt answers a different question from measuring upload-to-completed-index-update or upload-to-finished-transformation. A pipeline may receive notifications promptly and still miss its user-facing target because consumers are unavailable, a queue is growing, an object read takes time, or retries are extending the work. Record stage timestamps so a typical source notification time is not mistaken for an end-to-end result.

Choose an event transport for the workload

Transport selection is mainly a choice about how consumers receive, share, buffer, and route work. Latency claims alone do not settle it. The table summarizes the documented AWS options and the Cloud Storage notification path; operational fit depends on the surrounding design.

Option Useful when Important considerations
Amazon SQS Consumers should poll a queue, and processing availability should be decoupled from uploads. S3 cannot send notifications directly to an SQS FIFO queue. AWS documents using EventBridge to route S3 events to FIFO queues. Check the current S3 notification configuration documentation for destination-region constraints.
Amazon SNS One publication needs to reach multiple subscribers. Check the current S3 notification configuration documentation for destination-region constraints and confirm that subscriber delivery behavior fits the application.
AWS Lambda A managed function should respond to an event. Check the current S3 notification configuration documentation for destination-region constraints. Design the function and any downstream work to tolerate retries and duplicate handling.
Amazon EventBridge Event rules and routing to additional targets are useful, including routing S3 events to an SQS FIFO queue. AWS reports typical EventBridge latency of about half a second, with variation; this is not an S3-to-consumer end-to-end guarantee. EventBridge target retry settings and an optional dead-letter queue affect delivery after an event reaches the bus.
Cloud Storage notifications to Pub/Sub A Google Cloud Storage object notification should be published to Pub/Sub for consumers. Delivery is at least once, ordering is not guaranteed, and Google states there is no delivery-time SLA. Account for substantial delays.

For S3, the service distinguishes best-effort from durable event delivery by source; durable means at-least-once attempts to EventBridge. Delivery to an EventBridge target is a further stage with its own retry settings and optional dead-letter queue. This distinction matters when diagnosing where an event stalled: source-to-bus delivery and bus-to-target delivery are not the same boundary.

For Google Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub is the documented notification destination in this design. The available delivery description does not provide a latency SLA or a guarantee of ordering, so the consumer should not depend on either. Across providers, compare the number and type of consumers, routing and filtering needs, buffering and replay requirements, provider boundaries, and who will operate the system. No one transport is a universal best choice.

Use the consumer pattern to narrow the choice. A queue is a fit when workers should pull work and the buffer should separate upload availability from processing availability. A publish/subscribe pattern is useful when one publication needs to reach multiple subscribers. A managed function is relevant when a function should respond directly to the event. An event bus is useful when rules and routing to additional targets are part of the design. These are workload distinctions, not guarantees that one option will always be faster.

Include retention and replay in the decision rather than treating them as afterthoughts. Ask how long consumers may be unavailable, whether events need to remain available for later processing, and whether multiple consumer types need separate paths. Also account for ownership: someone must configure filters and destinations, handle failed delivery, inspect retries or dead-letter traffic, and operate the consumer. The cited provider material does not establish a universal price winner, so compare current service costs for the actual event volume and topology rather than inferring cost from latency.

Configure the notification path

For Amazon S3

  1. Decide which object operations should trigger work and whether the consumer needs every matching event or only a subset.
  2. Choose SNS, SQS, Lambda, or EventBridge according to the fan-out and routing needs above. Verify the current provider requirements for the selected destination, including applicable same-Region constraints for SNS, SQS, and Lambda.
  3. Use supported key-prefix and suffix filters to exclude irrelevant objects. If processing writes results back to storage, scope the trigger to an input prefix or put outputs in a separate bucket so the handler does not recursively invoke itself.
  4. Implement a consumer that handles the S3 notification’s JSON format, retrieves the intended object, and safely tolerates repeated or delayed events.
  5. Exercise the full path with representative uploads and observe successful processing time, retries, and failures in the target account and region.

S3’s test notification has a different structure from ordinary event records. A consumer should not assume that every notification has the same envelope as an ordinary object event. The maximum S3 notification message size is 64 KB, and event schemas can evolve; consumers should tolerate supported version changes rather than relying on an unnecessarily rigid parser.

Build the parser around the event shapes the consumer is expected to receive, and separate parsing from business processing. Recognize the test-notification case rather than trying to treat it as an ordinary object record. Check the event version in a way that allows supported changes, and avoid assuming fields will always appear in an identical envelope. The 64 KB maximum is also a useful reminder to keep the notification path focused on event information; consumers fetch the object separately when they need its contents.

For Google Cloud Storage

  1. Configure Cloud Storage object notifications to publish to Pub/Sub and choose the object changes relevant to the consumer.
  2. Have the consumer treat each notification as an at-least-once signal, not as a uniquely delivered command or an ordered change log.
  3. When acting on an object, use its generation to identify the object version involved. If the notification leads to a write, use generation and metageneration preconditions so the write does not unintentionally apply to an unexpected object state.
  4. Measure from the storage operation through consumer completion, and ensure the design remains correct when notification delivery is delayed.

Generation and metageneration serve as guards against acting on an object state that has changed since the consumer received its notification. For example, if the notification prompts a consumer to update an object, a precondition can prevent that write from applying when the object no longer matches the expected generation or metageneration. This makes the write conditional on the state the consumer intended to handle rather than silently overwriting a newer state.

Make duplicate delivery safe

At-least-once delivery means an event may be delivered more than once. A consumer that sends an email, creates a derived object, increments a counter, or updates an index must not repeat that side effect simply because the same notification was retried. Make the operation idempotent: handling the same logical event again should leave the intended result unchanged.

Use a durable idempotency key that identifies the operation at the right granularity. A practical starting point is the bucket plus object key plus version or generation, when available. Store the key alongside the processing result, and make the check and result update consistent with the side effect. A process-local cache is not enough when consumers restart or more than one worker handles events.

Choose the key carefully. If the application needs to process every version of an object, a key based only on bucket and object name would collapse distinct updates into one. Including the version or generation distinguishes those updates. If the application instead wants only the latest state, it still needs a deliberate rule for deciding whether an arriving event is stale before committing its result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think through what “same event” means for the application before choosing the key. For per-version work, each distinct object version should be eligible for its own processing result, while a retry for that version should find the prior result and avoid repeating its side effect. For latest-state work, the objective differs: multiple updates may be superseded, but an older event must not overwrite a result based on a newer state. In either case, the idempotency record needs to survive worker restarts and coordinate concurrent handlers, or duplicate deliveries can still race.

Handle reordering and changing object state

Native object notifications described here do not promise global event ordering. A consumer can therefore receive a later change before an earlier one, or read an object after it has changed again. Treat the event as evidence of a storage operation, not proof that the object still has the same state when the consumer fetches it.

For S3 PUT and DELETE events, the notification includes a sequencer. When maintaining state for the same object key, compare sequencer values to avoid replacing a newer indexed state with an older event’s state. This comparison is scoped to that key; it is not a global ordering mechanism across objects.

Cloud Storage notifications also do not guarantee order. Use object generations to reason about which version a notification refers to. If a consumer writes based on a notification, Google recommends generation and metageneration preconditions to ensure the write applies only when the object state is the one the consumer expects. This is especially important when another actor may have updated the object between notification and processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ordering control is therefore an application responsibility, not something to assume from the notification stream. If a handler keeps an index or derived state, it should know whether it is storing every object version or only the latest representation. For S3, sequencers help compare PUT and DELETE events for the same key; they do not establish order across unrelated keys. For Cloud Storage, use generation information and conditional writes where appropriate. In both cases, a fetch performed after receipt may see a newer state than the event originally signaled, so decide whether the consumer needs the event’s version or simply the current object.

Reduce irrelevant work and prevent event loops

Storage notifications can trigger large amounts of unnecessary work if every object change is routed to every consumer. Use available prefix and suffix filters to select the input objects that actually matter. Filters are a traffic-control measure, not a substitute for validation in the consumer: the consumer should still check that the event is one it knows how to handle.

Watch for self-triggering pipelines. A handler that reacts to an uploaded input and writes an output into the same watched scope can trigger itself repeatedly. Restrict the notification to an input prefix, or write derived outputs to a different bucket. Keep the trigger boundary explicit so later changes to file naming or output locations do not silently create a processing loop.

Filters also clarify ownership of the pipeline: one path can accept the input objects that start work while excluding generated outputs that should not restart it. Validate that the chosen prefix or suffix matches the actual object-key conventions used by uploaders and consumers. A filter that is too broad spends capacity on irrelevant events; a filter that is too narrow can omit intended work. Continue validating event type and object identity inside the consumer because filtering alone does not make event handling correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor the complete path and diagnose delays

Measure event age and the time from object creation to successful consumer completion. Also track queue depth, retries, dead-letter volume where configured, and handler duration. These metrics separate a slow notification from a backlog, repeated failures, slow object reads, or slow processing.

  • Object exists, but no consumer work is visible: check that the event type and object key match the configured scope, then inspect the source-to-transport path and destination configuration.
  • Events arrive, but processing falls behind: compare queue depth and event age with handler duration and consumer capacity. A growing backlog indicates that successful notification delivery is not the same as timely completion.
  • The same work appears more than once: treat this as an expected at-least-once delivery case and verify that the durable idempotency key prevents repeated side effects.
  • A derived result appears to move backward: check whether events were processed out of order and apply the object-version or sequencer logic appropriate to the provider and operation.
  • The handler keeps triggering itself: inspect its output location against the notification filters and move outputs outside the watched input scope or narrow the trigger.
  • Failures accumulate at a target: for EventBridge, inspect target retry settings and any configured dead-letter queue separately from source delivery to EventBridge.

Alert on the user-visible measure—age of the oldest unprocessed event or time to successful completion—rather than relying only on a notification service’s typical delivery description. Provider timing describes its service path, not the whole pipeline.

Use timestamps at meaningful boundaries: object creation, consumer receipt, processing start, object retrieval if it is a separate stage, and durable completion. Correlate those measurements with queue depth, retry activity, dead-letter volume, and handler duration. If receipt is timely but completion is not, the bottleneck is downstream of the source notification. If EventBridge is involved, inspect its delivery to the bus separately from the configured retries and dead-letter handling for targets. This staged view makes it easier to distinguish delivery delay from processing backlog.

Validate latency before setting an SLO

Test the actual upload-to-consumer path in the target region and account. Include the object sizes, event filters, transport, consumer dependencies, and processing steps that production will use. A useful test records at least the object creation time, event receipt time, processing start, and successful completion time, so a slow stage is distinguishable from another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test failure and recovery behavior as well as a normal upload: temporarily unavailable consumers, retry handling, repeated events, and out-of-order changes can expose correctness problems that a single successful event will miss. Establish the SLO from observed full-path behavior and operational requirements, with room for provider variability and recovery; do not convert a “typically seconds” statement into a contractual deadline.

Run the test in the account and region intended for the workload, since the path includes its actual storage configuration, transport, targets, and consumer dependencies. Include representative uploads and filters rather than measuring an isolated event service. Record both successful completion and failure or retry behavior so the test reflects what users experience during recovery, not just the fastest normal case. The provider statements are useful context: AWS describes S3 notifications as typically arriving in seconds but sometimes taking a minute or longer, and Google Cloud says Cloud Storage Pub/Sub notifications are typically delivered within seconds with no delivery-time SLA. Neither statement substitutes for testing the full path.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get notified when an object is uploaded to S3?

Configure an S3 Event Notification for the object events you need and select a supported destination such as SNS, SQS, Lambda, or EventBridge. Use prefix and suffix filters to limit the trigger to relevant objects, then have the consumer retrieve and process the object. Configure the destination and region requirements for your setup, and make the consumer safe for duplicate and delayed notifications.

How can I process files as soon as they land in object storage?

Use an object-change notification to trigger a queue, event bus, function, or publish/subscribe consumer instead of relying on repeated bucket polling. The notification starts the workflow; the consumer then fetches or processes the object. “As soon as” should be treated as a design goal rather than a hard deadline unless the full upload-to-completion path has been measured and meets the required SLO.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are S3 event notifications delivered exactly once?

No. S3 Event Notifications are designed for at-least-once delivery, so duplicate notifications are possible. Give the consumer a durable idempotency key, such as bucket plus object key plus version where available, and make repeated handling safe.

Are object-storage events delivered in order?

Do not assume so. S3 does not guarantee event order; PUT and DELETE notifications include a sequencer that can be compared for the same object key. Cloud Storage notifications also do not guarantee ordering. Use version or generation information and application logic to prevent stale work from replacing newer state.

Do S3 or Cloud Storage notifications guarantee delivery within seconds?

No hard end-to-end guarantee follows from those typical timings. AWS says S3 notifications typically arrive in seconds but can sometimes take a minute or longer. Google Cloud says Cloud Storage Pub/Sub notifications are typically delivered within seconds, but states there is no delivery-time SLA and substantial delays can occur. Consumer availability, queueing, retries, reads, and processing add further time.

Can S3 send notifications directly to an SQS FIFO queue?

No. AWS documents using EventBridge to route S3 events to an SQS FIFO queue. EventBridge target retries and an optional dead-letter queue affect delivery to targets after an event reaches EventBridge, so monitor the two delivery stages separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop a storage-triggered handler from invoking itself?

Restrict the notification to an input prefix or write derived outputs to a separate bucket. If filters are available, use them to exclude output keys, and validate the event in the consumer as well.

What should an S3 event consumer know about notification messages?

S3 notifications are JSON, the maximum message size is 64 KB, and a test notification has a different structure from ordinary event records. Parse defensively and tolerate supported event-schema version changes instead of assuming one rigid envelope.

Frequently Asked Questions

What transport should I choose for object-storage events?

Choose based on how consumers receive and share work: SQS for polling and decoupling processing from uploads, SNS when one publication should reach multiple subscribers, Lambda for a managed function response, EventBridge for event rules and routing, or Cloud Storage notifications to Pub/Sub for the documented Google Cloud path. Also weigh buffering, replay, filtering, provider boundaries, and who will operate the system.

What is the difference between EventBridge latency and end-to-end latency?

AWS reports typical EventBridge latency of about half a second, with variation. That figure is not an S3-to-consumer promise. Source notification, target delivery, queueing, consumer availability, object retrieval, retries, and processing all affect end-to-end completion.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

How do I make Google Cloud Storage notification-driven writes safe?

Use the object generation to identify the version involved. When a notification leads to a write, use generation and metageneration preconditions so the write does not apply to an unexpected object state.

The Bottom Line

Use native object-change notifications to start work, then choose a transport for the way consumers need to buffer, share, and route events. Treat notifications as at-least-once signals that may be delayed or out of order; use durable idempotency keys, object versions or generations, and provider-specific sequencing or preconditions to keep results correct. Measure upload-to-successful-processing in the target environment: typical seconds are not an end-to-end SLA.
