Amazon CloudFront can deliver a 24/7 video stream, but it does not encode raw footage or create a live channel by itself. You need a source and encoder, a suitable origin or packager, then a CloudFront distribution and a compatible player. A common AWS chain is source feed → AWS Elemental MediaLive → AWS Elemental MediaPackage or MediaStore → CloudFront → player. AWS also documents an HLS-focused MediaLive-to-S3-to-CloudFront reference solution.
The right design depends on the playback formats you need, packaging features, latency, redundancy, and expected traffic. The steps below cover the MediaLive-and-MediaPackage path and explain the alternatives. AWS documentation referenced here was checked on October 3, 2026; check current service availability, quotas, and prices before deployment.

What CloudFront does in a 24/7 video workflow
CloudFront is the content delivery network (CDN) at the viewer-facing end of the workflow. An encoder prepares the video for delivery, and an origin or packager makes the resulting media available to the CDN. CloudFront then distributes those prepared files to viewers. It is not a substitute for an encoder.

Live playback commonly uses media segments and manifests: segments contain the audio and video, while a manifest identifies the segments and their playback order. AWS describes HLS, DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF among the supported streaming formats. The encoder and origin must produce formats that the player and CloudFront behaviors are configured to handle. See AWS’s CloudFront Developer Guide, “Video on demand and live streaming video with CloudFront.”

Choose an AWS architecture
| Pattern | When it fits | Important checks |
|---|---|---|
| MediaLive → MediaPackage → CloudFront | You need packaging for multiple playback formats or MediaPackage features such as DRM. | Use the appropriate MediaPackage endpoint as the origin, route its manifest and segment paths, and enable origin authorization. Configure cache behavior for the actual formats and latency mode. |
| MediaLive → MediaStore → CloudFront | MediaLive already produces the formats viewers need and you want MediaStore as the origin. | Grant CloudFront access, set the MediaStore data endpoint and origin path, and choose caching behavior appropriate to the segment durations. |
| MediaLive → S3 → CloudFront reference solution | You want an HLS-oriented sample architecture and CloudFormation deployment to use as a starting point. | AWS describes the solution as emitting adaptive-bitrate HLS and supporting four source input types. It is described for a live event; assess continuous-channel operations and failover needs rather than assuming the sample is production-ready for 24/7 use. |
Compare candidate designs by required formats and devices, packaging or DRM needs, origin behavior, latency target, authorization, redundancy, AWS Region availability, operational responsibility, and cost at your expected bitrate and viewer load. AWS’s documented options do not establish a universal performance winner.
Build a MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront stream
- Prepare the source and MediaLive channel. Provide the upstream source input, configure the MediaLive channel’s output profiles for the target viewing formats and quality, then start the channel. MediaLive ingests and transcodes the source before sending outputs downstream. Choose profiles based on your source and intended viewers; the AWS material cited here does not prescribe one bitrate or resolution for every channel.
- Create the MediaPackage channel and endpoints. Choose endpoints for the playback formats you intend to serve. MediaPackage can package adaptive-bitrate output into HLS, DASH, and CMAF. Confirm that the endpoint formats match the players you will support.
- Create the CloudFront distribution and origin. Enter the correct MediaPackage origin domain and endpoint path. AWS notes that a MediaPackage origin entered from another account must use HTTPS. If you configure a wildcard path, AWS says it must route somewhere; its guidance describes using a dummy origin for unmatched paths so they do not accidentally route to a real origin.
- Add endpoint-specific cache behaviors. Route each endpoint’s manifest and segment requests using behaviors that match the actual paths and extensions. AWS examples distinguish HLS
.m3u8manifests and.tssegments; DASH and CMAF use their relevant manifest types and.mp4segments. Do not apply HLS patterns blindly to other formats, and make sure parent and child manifest paths are routed as required by the endpoint. - Set viewer protocol and caching policies. Use HTTPS for viewer delivery; AWS’s MediaStore procedure calls for redirecting viewer HTTP requests to HTTPS. Select cache policies to suit manifests, segments, and the segment durations in your workflow rather than applying one setting indiscriminately.
- Account for low-latency HLS if you use it. For LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, forward the
_HLS_msnand_HLS_partquery strings on manifest requests. If those parameters are not forwarded, the manifest request behavior will not match the documented LL-HLS requirement. - Authorize CloudFront at the origin. Enable MediaPackage header-based CDN authorization so requests from CloudFront to the MediaPackage endpoint are authorized. Protect the authorization secret. In AWS’s reference architecture, the CDN identifier is created during deployment and stored in AWS Secrets Manager.
- Test the complete playback path. Check the live source, MediaLive output, packaging endpoint, CloudFront responses, and playback on the actual player and device types you intend to serve. Validate failover and observe origin and CDN behavior before relying on the channel continuously. This is an operational recommendation based on the documented component boundaries and redundancy options, not a reported test result.
Plan availability and failover
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS architecture supports primary and secondary live streams through MediaLive and MediaPackage. That provides a documented pattern for designing redundancy, but does not remove the need to check that the chosen services and configuration are available in the Regions you plan to use. AWS states that MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect are available only in specific Regions. If MediaConnect flows are used as input, deploy the solution in the same Region as those flows. Check current service availability and quotas during planning because they can change.

For fault isolation, trace the workflow in order: upstream contribution, MediaLive ingest and channel, packaging or origin, CloudFront behavior, then the player. AWS describes these as distinct parts of the live-video chain; checking each boundary helps narrow down where delivery has stopped or become incompatible.
Estimate the cost for your actual 24/7 workload
There is no single AWS cost figure that applies to every continuous stream. Cost depends on factors including encoded profile, bitrate, viewers, duration, Region, and cache behavior. A 24/7 channel runs far longer than a one-off event, so do not treat an event estimate as a continuous-stream quote without checking its assumptions.

AWS’s deployment-planning guide gives example event scenarios using US-East-1 standard pricing and, for an upper-range example, the highest bitrate. One scenario assumes a 99% cache/hit ratio between CloudFront and MediaPackage. That is an assumption in that guide’s scenario, not a promised or generally expected hit rate. AWS also notes that QVBR and variable video complexity may reduce bandwidth and the estimate. Build a workload-specific estimate using current AWS prices and your expected duration, profiles, traffic, and cache assumptions.
